Many more projects like this and you’ll have to hire some slobs to solder your blobs. Great vid as always!

I have to say that s-video is great for an unmodded n64 and ps1/ps2

I completely agree that S-Video is sharp enough, I have several systems with that output: original snes fat, modded megadrive, ps1 and ps2, and for me svideo through a sony trinitron is just excellent. The ps2 with component cables looks kind of the same at a normal distance and I dont see the point in looking with a magnifying glass. If RF is a 1/10 in video quality, and RGB Scart is a 10, we could say Composite is a 5, S-Video an 8 and Component a 9.

That Toshiba is a great TV. I wish I had the big one like you. I have the 14' and apparently the DVD player is hooked up using s video, yet they didn't put an s video connection on the back of the tv....I dunno how common that was to do,but makes me scraych my head. Especially the TV being from 07. I had a flat screen crt back in the early 2000s and it had an s video connection and I never understood what it was for(these things weren't talked about) and I'd imagine by 07, companies still making crts probably figured nobody used s video, which is a shame as so many millions of ppl back in the day didn't know this stuff. We didn't know how to get the best video quality,or why we'd even care, since you didn't really see it. I used an RF adapter on everything, N64 Dreamcast, ps1 on my original TV that was in my bedroom as a kid and so did pretty much everyone else I knew, or used composite. It's a shame they didn't use gaming back then, to push the video quality and different connections on tvs. At least they didn't push as hard as they could have. If we still lived in the crt era knowing what ppl know now, I'm sure all crts would be like pvms and there'd be 30 different connections in the back for all sorts of stuff

Watching this takes me back. I used to mod my consoles and recap my crts, stuff like that. I just use a MiSTer/CRT now. More time to play games. I competed in a Street Fighter 2 tournament a couple weeks ago and half the setups were composite video to consumer crts and the other half were rgb to arcade crt monitors. There was about 100 of us competing in the tournament but I could only find one guy that cared about video quality. No one else seemed to care. The opposite happens when I chat with videophile groups. They care about video quality but don't care much about playing games. Seems like the collecting/nostalgia/videophile scene doesn't have much overlap with the competitive/1cc/speed-run scene.

@@riggel8804 No man, been on a kick collecting retrogaming stuff and CRTs and haven't played a single game! I did manage to fix that DK64 issue I told you about, by disabling the Velocity Modulation on the Toshiba 32AF42. I had to pull out a cable from the neckboard to do that. Works great!

I too only enjoy video games. The limitations of older hardware pushed the developers to understand the limitations of what they could achieve, then, with troll-like creativity, they would proceed to build beyond those limitations using clever tricks and illusions. Old game design was essentially a game: it gave you a play field on which to work. Modern game design lacks these limitations and thus creativity is never inspired. Creativity is directly tied to survival and our will to conquer.

I'm perfectly fine emulating these older games on my computer using original controllers. Though when the Switch 2 comes out, I'll turn my original 1st release Switch into an emulation device for all of these older games.

I bought a Sega Tower of power last year on Ebay (32X, Model 1 Genesis, Model 1 Sega CD) which had the Genesis and 32x S Video modded and AV modded, also had an overclocked chip (which helps reduce slowdown in SOME but not all games) and a useless pause feature but man what an upgrade in graphics from the awful composite of the genesis. Its so crisp. I did notice the jail bars on my 32 inch Trinitron but on my 32 inch Toshiba 32A41 they are gone, or at least i cant see them anymore. Not sure what happened but imma leave it on the Toshiba. Great video, retro on CRT is the WAY.

man, that is entirely too much work for admittedly very cool outcome, but omg, seeing you disassemble the console just fills me with existential dread every time, like it's forever broken with no way to revive.. literally dark magic!! X_X congratulations though, and also you must be more courageous/risky and like tweaking this stuff since you've got this far in modding! (trying to make a compliment here and it sounds like an attack, but I'm just saying that these things seem very scary to someone who's not as skilful with electronics..)

I like the retro game videos, however they have way more complicated acronyms and no wood flavoured smoke nor sacrificial ritual of a life was needed to make em. Months have gone since our last rib video and i am starting to believe, because of EJ's vampire-esque ability to look the same throughout the years, that he has switched to a vegan rib diet where no ghosts are made and no flavours enjoyed. We need pig meat good sir.

Ya the subcarrier in the genesis runs parallel to the rgb lines causing bad noise you can lift it but YOULLE lose a video I’m working on a pcb to give s video composite and rgb while eliminating most bars. A recap may also tone them down

Nice! With many of the higher end mods like the triple bypass and Voultar mods, Svideo isn't always given enough attention anymore. Makes sense with your CRT choice too. 1:54 - This is great example of SCART to component with sync on luma but I think it might be good to have a split diagram with RGBS and the sync line. I'm guessing you left it out because sync and color space becomes a whole other ball of wax and takes away from your primary discussion on Svideo. 4:26 - Usually I use a heat gun but it is interesting to watch different takes. Seeing the giant flame is very Mad Max Fury Road. Very nice!
@RedCowArcade
@RedCowArcade Жыл бұрын
Yeah there were many rabbit holes I could have gone down. I actually cut a few to make the video more focused. Perhaps a good topic for a future mod! And yes I sometimes use a heat gun as well, but I do a lot of BBQ videos so fire is usually not far away from me... and usually I don't melt anything I'm not supposed to. Usually.
