Modding the Razer Huntsman Mini: Easy steps for better sound!

I recently got the new Razer Huntsman Mini with purple clicky optical switches. I really enjoy the 60% form factor, but noticed that the keys were pinging (or reverbing) when they were depressed. It's fairly subtle and most won't notice it, but having used many other keyboards without this issue, I set forth on an afternoon-long journey to mod the Huntsman Mini and remove this annoying sound.
The whole process is pretty easy with directions, but still time consuming. The materials required are just basic tools, some $6 spray lube, and roughly $10 of sound dampening foam. There will also be plenty left over so you can use them for future projects. Be sure to have a few hours free to finish the whole process.
Skip to sound tests:
0:00:20 - Stock Huntsman Mini
0:04:02 - With 1 layer of sound dampening foam
0:08:12 - With lubed switches, stabs, and 2 layers of foam

For those of you looking to do this to a Huntsman TE, please watch my before/after sound comparison video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKetYqCeZ72enKs The procedure for the TE is almost exactly the same, but there's an extra hidden screw in the back (watch my video to for how to get to it). Also, if you don't want to push the switches out by force, you can squeeze the two clips on the side of each switch together (from underneath the PCB) a little and then they slide right out.

@@flockedat are you talking about the stabilizer clips on each end of the spacebar? Razer sells replacement PBT keycap sets that would work (and they come with new stabilizers), but if you just broke the keycap itself, any standard keycap set fits on the Huntsman Mini since it has a standard bottom row.
@flockedat

@@bigxie I actually fixed it in a different way. I took the same stabilizers from the delete key, took one of them and replaced the broken one with the backspace. @Jao Bai Dun Razor basically integrated a tuning fork in their optical switches, so no wonder about the noise. I didn't try the lube, for 200€, a keyboard has to be good out of the box. @Layarion I think with the new codecs youtube doesn't cut of the high frequencies anymore. Is there a chance of it breaking and does this work on Razer Huntsman because i am trying to find something to make my keyboard at least quieter than my voice.
@bigxie
@bigxie 4 жыл бұрын
There's always a risk involved when it comes to disassembling the keyboard. The original Huntsman is also an older design and I think more difficult to open than the Mini or TE. But once you get to the PCB, the switches and stabs can be removed the same way and lubing them will help reduce the sound, but I'm not sure if it will become quieter than your voice (I guess this depends on your mic as well, if it can cut out some background noise - if you're talking about voice comms in games).

For anyone else going to do this mod or anyone wondering why he couldn’t get the ribbon cable off at 2:04 this is because it has a lock to it. Good thing he didn’t pull to hard or he could have broke it. You need to pull up on the locking part and then it should come off easily.
@bigxie

Yeah not too sure why I wasn't able to get it unlocked the first time, but didn't have any issues the second time when I opened it again for lubing. After about 6-7 custom keyboard builds I returned to where I originally started, I bought a razer blackwidow chroma way back when I got into PC gaming had it for about 4 years and in 2020 I took into customs built a GMMK Pro which was my most expensive build then did a few different 60% and 4 different TKLS I finally gave up on the hobby and picked up a Razer Huntsman Elite V2 Analog, would love to look at some of these mods, since the switches on it are adjustable it is super nice for typing and gaming and I always preferred heavier linear switches and I while I cant really find anything for the actuation force on these I would have to say that these are in the 60-70g range and I love it a lot, I really want to improve the stabilizers but arent really familiar with these types of stabs, this video is the beginning of my mods on this keyboard thank you!

For the flat black cable, there is a kind of small plastic lever that you flip up and it comes loose very easily. There is no need to take the whole controller board off. To put is back you simply reverse the process by facing the metallic conecters down an putting the plastic lever down. (:

I finished doing this just now and the results are amazing! Thank you so much for the tutorial. All in all it cost me about $5-$6. All I had to do was go out and buy the lubricant at Walmart. I used a mat that I use for changing my car's oil as the dampener. 3 layers of the soft paper like fabric. The spacebar is still not where I wish it would be but a lot better than before. Thank you!
@bigxie

NP, glad to hear it went well for you! Tuning space bars is always a challenge, even on some higher end custom boards. There are some "spacebar foams" that you can try, which can reduce the hollow or echo-y sound of the spacebar. If it's rattling noise that's bothering you, then maybe some dielectric grease on the stabilizer bars can soften that up.

I made a quick comparison video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKetYqCeZ72enKs I know the linears in the Mini are going to be "v2" and be a little more quiet to start with, but I think they will also benefit from being lubed (and the case will definitely still need sound dampening).

That's just the difference between clicky and linear switches. The Mini is also available in linear (red) switches and they're a lot quieter than the ones in the TE since Razer listened to the complaints from TE owners (too loud, too sensitive) and made improvements in their 2nd gen linears.

Sorry to hear about that, but it doesn't mirror my experience at all. Actually, after 6 months, I haven't encountered any issues or noticed any fade in the effects of the WD-40 dry lube. Did you remember to shake the can well before spraying and then between every couple of switches? Otherwise, it's possible you didn't spray an even coating and could have gunked up the switches.

I think if you’re going to pay full price for this keyboard, its not worth it to then mod it. Even getting a Anne Pro might not be a bad option. But, like me, I got it for sale, barely used, for $80. Now I can spend the extra money on lubricant and foam.
@bigxie
@bigxie 3 жыл бұрын
I tend to agree with this. At the same price point, there are a lot of great 60% hotswaps available. They're more flexible than the Huntsman Mini and upgradeable down the line (if you want to get more premium switches). They're also easier to mod with removeable switches and standard plate mount stabs. But for either case, if you want "good" sound, you'll need to invest a little extra in lube and foam to really get it tuned in.

I don't think it'll make much of a difference. If you're talking about wanting to individually brush each switch with like Krytox or something, I don't know, but I wouldn't recommend it (Razer optomechanical switches cannot be opened nondestructively like traditional switches).

Hi, Razer uses the same OEM for their opto-mechanical switches as Bloody, so technically maybe those LK Libra switches would work as well, but I'd stick to the Razer red and purple switches. Damn, I don't think I recoomend popping the switches off though, I messed up some switches on the PCB doing this. just some questions, how do you pop the stabilizers out? I opened my Razer huntsman te, and i couldnt get the stabs out. Also, do you also use 2 layers of sound dampening foam on the te?
@bigxie
@bigxie 4 жыл бұрын
It's easiest to get them out if you approach from the front. The rectangular plastic bases have clips that when compressed, allow for them to come free from the PCB. I did use 2 layers of foam in the TE as well, but it does come in contact with the bottom of the switches. I was able to compress everything back and not encounter any issues but if you're concerned, you can stick with one layer. I'm pretty sure the lubing is more impactful on the sound than the extra layer of foam anyways.

@@bigxie Thanks, also another question, around 2:25, on those stand-offs in the case where the stabilizers wold be, (the hollow cylinders with a cross), I can see there is a little pad of some kind of sound dampener, did you add that on to the board? or did it come stock like that, because on the huntsman te, the same stand-offs dont have those little pads.

@@Alex-gp5xl up to the point at 0:02:45 where I hold up the base, I had not made any modifications to it, so that's just the way the stock Mini is. @@Alex-gp5xl you could try. I didn't and most of my stabilized keys sounded great, except the backspace (maybe you can hear it in the other TE video), so maybe some kind of very thin padding over the standoffs could've fixed that.
