As any modeller (that has my way of thinking) would say: "any mistakes you make are just free weathering". Sooo either ye try to cover it up as best you can or you just add it to the story of whatever you try to make. To the random stranger in the background: your shenanigans have not gone unnoticed xD

fr, ive seen tons of kits for other hobbies that say they come with everything including tools and theyre the most useless cheap tools and you still have to go buy stuff. this tho looks damn good. these typa kits is truely how you get people into the hobby properly imo

3:02 "Plastikkleber" is in fact special glue only suitable for the kind of plastic Walthers or Revell etc. kits are made of. I learned that the hard way as a kitbuild freightcar (slightly different material) desintegrated while running. So be careful with that

As someone who does a fair amount of model work (tabletop wargaming rather than railroad stuff in my case) it was fun to watch you work on this. I haven't done a lot of scenery, although I might eventually do a nice display board for my armies so they look good at tournaments. I look forward to seeing the rest of this series!

Ah, yes. Cripple Creak. I also tried to build a nice 4x8 layout from the Model Railroader in high school, however, moving from a 3-car garage to a 2-car was not polite to my layout. The project was halted and the table was repurposed as storage where it still sits today, 7 years later. Someday, when I move into my own house after college, I will definitely build another one, probably much bigger. Great work, Hyce, and thanks for inspiring me!

Hey hyce I’d recommend to use a spoon and tooth pick when ballasting to prevent ballast from going every where and it allows you to slowly add ballast

I wonder if cutting a v notch in the end of a plastic spoon would let you lay the ballast very precisely.

So, here in down under. I work at a quarry, some time ago we did a run of crushed black granite for a model company, I then happened to see the same stone a few weeks later in a model store "real stone ballast" for model rail roads.... it was $50 for 2kg of this stuff.... that's 25 grand a ton. I know we didn't sell it for anywhere near that

When gluing down the Ballast, mist it with either Wet Water (water with a few drops of liquid dish soap) or 90% Alcohol. This will cause the glue to flow more evenly throughout the ballast. Then allow everything to dry. alcohol dries much faster which is what I recommend using.

Real railroads don't care about cleaning up. I know a retired prison psychologist who likes to create welded projects. We talked one day when I happened upon his wares and workshop. I started bringing him discarded railroad spikes, tie plates, and other discarded hardware found along the tracks. He's made huge dandelions and other creations out of rebar and rail spikes.

Hey, Hyce, I am watching the Steam 101 cold start vid again and when you mentioned about the cyclone on the front end, I don't think you talked about the purpose and advantage that 491 gets because she has one compared to a normal loco without a cyclone. Does it help draft the smoke and steam out the stack while at the same time catch the largest chunks of coal that are small and light enough to be caught by the draft the steam and smoke create on it's way out the stack?
@Hyce777
@Hyce777 9 ай бұрын
Hey mate! The advantage is that it causes the smoke to spend more time in the stack before it leaves, causing the cinders to stop being on fire much more easily.
