I was in Mystic Seaport, CT this week. They've hauled the L.A. Dunton out to replank and rebuild whatever is rotten. What an incredible opportunity to see all the planking details up close on a 100-yr old vessel. She looks so much larger out of the water than when she's afloat!

Remarkable. The sails are catching wind, lines are taught not tense, she’s a real eye catcher. I’m curious Olha, where would you rank this vessel in your portfolio? My sense is you are improving with each build, which is amazing given your level of craftsmanship. But you must have a favorite or two. Regardless, this is a stunning build which I have thoroughly enjoyed through the entire process.

Thank you! It may sound strange, but my favorite model is the first one. I can't look at it without smiling... It is displayed in one of the cafes 100 from Kyiv. Fortunately, the rascists did not get there, although there were heavy battles in that part of the country in the first month of the war. So I can still go and see my first model…

In your opinion, which are the best model makers (companies) in that they are historically faithful and their kits can be (possibly?) completed to museum quality? And which kits were you personally most impressed with?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
In general, each KIT, even from the same manufacturer, is different. Different engineers design them and modelers who do research and build a prototype. And all of them are as simplified as possible and without full details. Therefore, if you want to build a truly museum copy, start by purchasing professional tools and more expensive materials and make more and more parts yourself! There is no limits to the kits for their improvement)))
@Pocketfarmer1
@Pocketfarmer1 Жыл бұрын
6:17 Ashley constrictor knot? 11:23 minor technical note: your coils are the wrong way around for the lay of the “rope”. That’s part of why they want to twist into figure8s. On a real ship those coils would turn into a tangled mess in use.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
In general, this is Clove Hitch. It was just a very inconvenient place for close-up filming. For this scale, simply twisting the coils is enough. But if you feel like it, you can cut each one and make the correct coils outside the model and glue them in place! I don't like to cut the ropes, because no matter how you try to glue the coils back, it's always visible. Therefore, I do it only in those cases where there is no possibility to do otherwise...

Those lines by themselves already have such a beautifull texture, they really look like real ropes. What type of thread is that you are using for ropes?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I use 100% polyester overlock thread. They have no texture, so they can be twisted both to the left (for standing rigging) and to the right (for running rigging)...

@@OlhaBatchvarov Whatever you did to get that effect it´s a great job and video too. I am still a begginer on the craft and as for inexperience I got afraid to ruin my somewhat expensive Mayflower from Constructo so I bought one of those cheap ones from Ebay to practice and experiment before doing any wrong to the big one and I have been struggling a little with plank bending because I don´t have any of those tools specific for that job and I have tried a few different methods but none of them proved good enough to get the best results but I keep trying other methods and eventually I will manage to get to the rigging stage and that´s the point that I would like to have that high end looks on my Mayflower wich by he box and pics I´ve seen i the internet already is beatifull and I reaaly want to make the best decisions so I don´t regret later and while watching your video I imediately thought that she´s needs lines like you have there to get the high end effect I´m hoping, those lines that actually looks like real ropes that were shrunk are just wonderfull for her. I´m not sure if you use a single thread or more than one, or if you apply some sort of glue, liquid or anything so it doesn´t lose the twisted effect and if there´s any advanced skill involved(like said still a begginer at this so all the doubts and are popping up for almost everything yet). I wonder if you have any video featuring that process or if you could demonstrate how you manage to do it? Sorry for the long comment but this is my way trying to explain how important things are to me, even if small details, and also making sure I´m passing out exactly what mean without being mis-understood and really apreciate any tip you can drop aswell.
