Now need to add water injection into the afterburner to add some more thrust and help drive temps down :D

I myself was curious what turbine temps were looking like.

Good god, man! This is insanely awesome! Most model turbine afterburners I've seen were more for looks than anything, but the thrust on yours is obviously VERY significant. It's kicking the rig like crazy! You can tell by the color of the flame that it's pretty efficient also, very impressive guys. Hope you can manage to actually put it in a model and fly it! Have you actually measured the thrust? I'd like to know. Full-size afterburning turbines approach double thrust, it looks like yours might surpass that! I don't know all the science of it, but perhaps the small scale could be working in your favor.

Nice to see it kicking the test stand a bit, this one looks like more go than show.

oh my god, the thrust in that thing is insane!!!!!!! Amazing!! How about using EDF to pump cool air around the afterburner, using a second layer of metal? That could insulate some of the heat from the craft's body.

Probaly titanium since it has higher melting points and lighter than steel

Try to use inconel or incolloy. They are very high temperature resistant, cheap nickel alloys, and are made for turbines. This is what car turbocharger turbines are made of.

Very nice work! want to see the internal structure. Are you using the spark plug is in the ignition ?
@georgerickard55099 жыл бұрын
GRANDSYSTEM co.,ltd I also want to know this. It's a spark in large (military) reheaters, but assuming this is running on kero, a glowplug should do. I'd also like to see the flame holder.
@zenpro81647 жыл бұрын
on your AB did you use a fuel tube or injectors? spark plug or glow plug? Im just trying to get ideas when I put mine together..super thanks 😃
@clintontrex7 жыл бұрын
zen pro it uses an injector ring 50mm ahead of the flame holder. For the ignitor I used a hot streak setup which I built into the turbine this runs for 0.2s. At the same time the afterburner pumps start. It's all programmed by a homemade hand held unit. My friend is standing ahead of the afterburner watching a display which adjusts the hotstreak time hotstreak power and afterburner pump power.

@jonjo259810 жыл бұрын
Have you guys considered a variable nozzle? I saw the heat spreading up your reaction chamber and though I doubt the flame is hot enough to melt your nozzle the buildup of pressure could lead to some problems. A simple solution can be found in the video below. variable nozzle www.airspacemag.com/flight-today/how-things-work-afterburners-18481403/?no-ist=&page=1

Hi. What materials are you using in your design???
@clintontrex8 жыл бұрын
Hi, the sections are made using locally available SS316 which is just 3 and 4 inch tube with reducers for the diffuser and nozzle, the flame holder I used SS253ma because it is very thin, everything is tig welded. The rings you can see are 12 bolt flanges so different parts can be swapped out.

I hope this is going into a RC jet. you gotta bring it to the New England Jet Rally !

Yes the plan is to mount it in a model jet. I bought a FeiBao Mirage F1 with the intention of mounting this engine in it however the kit is really small and only holds 3L of kero. Just waiting on a suitable air frame now.

Excellent design, but some safety is suggested and that fuel should be out of the shed not on the table. Perhaps some bypass air should be bled to cool that afterburner as it will not work ccntinuously.
@zenpro81647 жыл бұрын
how do you figure out the exhaust hole size of the afterburner tube
@clintontrex7 жыл бұрын
zen pro I just sourced standard sizes from a local SS supplier, the chamber is just 4inch and the nozzle is a 4inch to 3inch reducer, the chamber is twice the length of the diameter so 8inches. There was no calculation and by no means is it perfect or correct, this AB was built purely for fun. The flame holder is the critical piece. Ideally the nozzle should be variable to adjust the pressure in the chamber and gas speed, check a vid of a fighter e.g. F16 takeoff from behind and you will see the nozzle actuating.
