The Tesla Model Y is very versatile for cargo storage, and today I walk through what it is like fitting everyday objects inside my Model Y. We see how to carry on suitcases, golf clubs, backpacks, laundry baskets, and a stroller fit inside the Tesla Model Y.

For the majority of people interested in buying a Model Y, Cargo Space Is probably the biggest selling point, and today I’m going to go into detail about what the cargo space looks like with practical everyday objects, along with detailed measurements of the entire car for everyone who knows about that sort of thing.
For me, when I see a suitcase, or laundry basket in a car, it’s much more helpful for me to picture cargo space, so I’ll start there.
First up, let me give a quick walkthrough of all the storage that the Model Y has. Tesla claims that the Model Y has 68 cubic feet of cargo space, and that is achieved by having a massive under storage compartment, seats that fold flat, and a pretty spacious frunk.
The first and most obvious place that you’ll be looking to store cargo will be the hatchback trunk, which now has a powered lift-gate on the Model Y, which is a nice bonus over the Model 3
When you open up the back, you’ll get a very large trunk space without even folding the seats down.
I put two carry on suitcases in the Model Y trunk followed by two backpacks, a strollers, golf clubs, two laundry baskets, and a storm trooper. Then I fit them all together.
So for those objects I was just using the storage In the trunk, but there is also a massive under storage compartment that we can use, along with a smaller one, and two side cubbies
The understorage adds a lot of space. As you can see you can fit a carry on suitcase, backpack, or even a laundry basket inside the hidden understorage compartment.
A small backpack in the Model Y can also fit in the deep and wide side cubbies. Those cubbies help with long objects like golf clubs.
So that’s the rear storage with the seats up. Pretty great Model Y storage space. So anything that worked from there, you can pull off with 5 passengers in the car comfortably, but you also have the option of folding the rear seats down. You can fold them manually, or by pressing these buttons in the back, and now you have a very welcomed gigantic cargo space.
These seats also fold independently which gives you a bunch of options
You can do all seats individually besides the left most seat since there is a bar that holds the left and middle seats together.
You can fold just the right seat, just the center seat, just the right and center seats, or just the left and center seats.
So with 2 passengers in the Tesla Model Y, that is everything you can fit in the rear of the car.
Now, let’s go camping! Now of course, to properly sleep in this car, you’ll want some kind of bed, but I’ll just get in and show you what it’s like. Keep in mind that I’m 5’10”.
So with the Model Y front seats pushed all the way forward, which I assume is what you would do to sleep, this is how much space I have.
Next up is the Model Y Frunk or Model Y Front Trunk. The frunk on the Model Y is quite a bit larger than the Model 3 which is very welcomed. You can fit a carry on suitcase, laundry basket, backpack, or other miscellaneous things in there easily.
So now that we’ve used the Frunk, let’s add it into our overall cargo space with the rear seats up, using the understorage, and assuming you have 5 passengers inside.
AND UNDERSTORAGE
The last place that there is a little bit of extra storage in the Model Y would be under the front seats. Since the seats are on risers there’s actually a pretty sizable gap underneath each one. Not really much to add there, but it exists to store cleaning wipes, or anything you can think of.
So there are some practical examples of how stuff fits in the Model Y. It’s a very adaptable car, that actually has a lot of hidden storage whenever you need it.

Model 3 owner here. Beach trip didn't work due to storage. 2 beach chairs, 2 umbrellas, 2 coolers, 2 normal suitcases, 2 kids suitcases, backpack, beach stuff bag, collapsable beach wagon.. We had our Volvo XC60 packed to the brim. packing for just 2 people is great but man... 2 kids like triples the amount of crap you have to pack. Once my lease is up, I'm considering sliding over to the Y and getting the tow package to attach a trailer hitch tray.

All you need to camp is a $9 Walmart Twin mattress (and a $14 car charger pump). Then, the mattress goes all the way up to the seats and covers the hole when the top rests on the center console. I'm 6'4" and have camped in the S, X and 3... so the Y will be great, I'd say just behind the X 5/7 seater (6 won't work), then the S, with the 3 being the worst with the shelf that makes turning over a pain.

Going to become a regular rural mail carrier once a position opens up in Cali. ( still need 2 months and some) Last position that was open was in Santa Barbara, and you needed your own vehicle. That all looks great... except, as I've mentioned before, it's lacking a place for a spare tire. Where I live and drive, I need a spare at the ready, and it's really too bad that there is not a dedicated underfloor space set aside for one. I think it makes it a deal breaker for me (unfortunately).

Most new cars are off the list then as they don't have them. Plenty of space if you include a large roof box and hitch box for distance travel with a spare in the trunk. Problem is the 900 pound payload max.

This is amazing, the Model Y is just so much better than the model 3. And that is not easy to say. Because i own a Model 3 and i absolutely love it. The amount of storage capacity is mindblowing. Because i'm only 21 years old and don't need that much space, the Model 3 fits good for me, but if i would be older with a family i would definetly prefer the Model Y. Thanks for the detailed video.

No anchoring points to secure the stuff?? Another musing item is a Foot sensor for the trunk, got it on my 3 and it makes it all 100%,better. When the back of the car is dirty and your loading stuff back there you don’t want to mess around touching the car or accessing you phone.

I have a bike mounting system that sits over the back window. Does the job for the odd occasion when i have 2 bikes to carry. Kids bikes would then fit in boot. It cost £50 or thereabouts. For me it would not be worth paying £1,000 for a traiker hitch for the odd occasion it would be used.

Ryan - EXCELLENT VIDEO. 100% agree cubic feet is a ridiculous measurement for car interiors. Golfbags, laundry baskets and stroller is useful. Model Y space was a key design consideration and goes to the heart of my use case. Seeing you've owned both Model 3 and Model Y, how do they compare? This would be a great topic for further videos. (Personally, I prefer Model 3 looks over Model Y but would consider forgoing esthetics for functionality - if I get enough.) GREAT WORK!

Love the video, perfect way to demonstrate the storage space. My wife took your advice and successfully moved up delivery of her ordered Y. She changed the wheels, of course to the tune of $2000 ah well, and became a squeaky wheel with Tesla in Houston and in San Antonio. It appears that changing the wheels was the kicker. She has her VIN, a completed MVPA and is awaiting a confirmed delivery date. However that will require a road trip to San Antonio in her Model 3 that she is trading in after having it less than 1year. The storm trooper was a great touch.

Is the large under storage area in the trunk lined with plastic or fabric? If plastic (IE: moisture / chemical resistant) it would be a safe place to put jugs of chlorine for the pool. Currently I have to haul those in a plastic tub (sold by Home Depot to mix concrete in) in the trunk of my car.

Oh my gosh that's so much storage. I could do well with half that. I hope that if/when Tesla makes a small car they have a hatchback design because it shows how much room they can cram into a normal vehicle. Really REALLY looking forward so something like what they proposed as the China designed Tesla or a smaller cybertruck. Especially if it's a lower price (I'm budget limited to getting a used Tesla until then)

So sorry I missed your 3pm live event today:((( I am a paraplegic who has a Model3 plus a ModelY on order. The ModelY is not yet here in Vancouver so I cannot see if I can transfer into it. How high is the driver’s seat in the ModelY at it’s lowest position? Can you see if the 3” riser can be removed? What is the verticals range of adjustment of the driver’s seat? Any answer you can provide would help me decide whether to confirm my order!
