We wanted to find out what the real world winter range differrence is between a standard Model Y RWD vs a Model Y LR ( Dual Motor)
We managed to drain the batteries "completely" and we now have a good ideea of how they compare in real life. Thanks for watching and let us know which model you will go for :)

Thank you for the great video, the difference of 50 km between RWD and AWD is really not worth the price of around €7,000. Obviously, RWD is quite enough and I think it has no competition in its class! The best choice is RWD, price ratio, performance, consumption. For me, definitely RWD.

Good job on the switching positions on the highway. For reference I would appreciate also that you mention what it says on the forecast for the wind conditions. Its same for both of the cars but impacts the consumption values reached. And I think -1c weather is not winter consumption if roads are perfectly dry so you could drive with summer tires. Also mention and show which tires you are running on each car. Rolling resistance plays big role in the range... Since you already have both of the models I would like to see a side by side comparison when you put tall and narrow wheels for the SR. Something like 215/55R18 will gain you about 10% more range. If you need help selecting setup just ask me or watch my videos.

Very helpful video, thanks. Interested to see what range you get in warmer conditions: 10C and then 20C please! The other interesting use case is winding country roads, not many people test in those conditions.

Great video ,thanks guys. I live in Switzerland and am about to buy a Model Y SR which should come from GigaBerlin. I notice your car has the ambient lighting which I didn’t see on the tester. Is this direct from the factory, and are there any other soft updates for the SR Model Y like HW 4.0 cameras? Merci!!

Great. Picking MYLR in Monday 🤞, only went to LR because of 4x4 and I'm cruising the mountains in the winter, so RW despite better batteries wasn't the correct choice. Come to Krapets to have some surfing and MY talks.

Awesome comparison. I've got a TMY RWD and did ~5kkm round Europe trip last summer with no issues at all, but kept on having the thought if I did really choose well not going with the LR (which was not eligible for incentives and thus approx +15k$ more). No regrets now. RWD performance is more than enough, and efficiency is King 💪

Michelin Crossclimate 2s on both. I've got to be honest here.. as much as I love RWD and always advocate for AWD being unnecessary for 90% of people. Traction is better for the dual motor in fresh snow. On the roads it's irrelevant but climbing a mountain road with fresh snow with a RWD Y will most likely get you stuck.

Lucky us that you have both cars and produce these simple but rather concrete comparisons. What battery the RWD has? CATL? BYD?
@Twin.motors
@Twin.motors 4 ай бұрын
I believe it's the CATL. I'm trying to get my hands on a BYD one too and test them all. There aren't many of them around sadly.. for whatever reason RWD models barely exist here. For every 50 LR I see one RWD
@kutrix2010
@kutrix2010 4 ай бұрын
One more interesting thing to see would be how these line up in terms of performance at lower states of charge. LFP keeps high battery voltage all the way down, while LR looses the power gradually. At low state (5-10%) I wouldn't be surprised if RWD was faster than LR 🙂

for reference M3 LR at 90% has 0-100 of 4,43 , at 20% 4,92 and at 10% 6,15 , while M3 SR+ at 90% has 0-100 of 6,19 whilst at 10% it's at 6,41 so yeah probably below 10% the tables change. but over 15% its not a contest. ( stats from Bjorn Nyland )

Nice test and great job ! I would mention though, the WLTP isn't done at 130 km/h, but more like 80 km/h. So one shouldn't be amazed that driving an EV @ 130 km/h it didn't match the WLTP numbers.

@KubaYa1411
@KubaYa1411 4 ай бұрын
Well of course it's better. But range is marginal. Charging power at the peak, then they go quite similar, plus dual motorway using more, so basically they can travel at the same pace. Definitely nice to have all wheel drive and 500HP but is worth 8k € which is +20%? I don't think so.

Excellent video. Did bought cars have the same tires as well? At the end of the range test did you do a test to charge the two cars to 100% to see how much energy was delivered from the charger, this way you can do real-world energy usage combined with the charging losses. This way the difference in consumption might be bigger or smaller depending on how much energy was delivered from the charger.

That 50 km range difference can be a difference to which supercharger you go to and also how long you charge at a supercharger and that could affect journey times.
@Twin.motors
@Twin.motors 4 ай бұрын
Of course it does help but you're paying for that extra 50km 24/7 by using 10% more energy AND by paying an additional 7k ish for the car. So while the extra range still exists, I would say it's mostly down to the extra power
@jeanbaptistelabelle
@jeanbaptistelabelle 4 ай бұрын
You buy an LR for 20%more range which is very significant for many together with 4 wheel drive.
@Twin.motors
@Twin.motors 4 ай бұрын
It really depends where you live and how snowy It is. I've been driving rwd my whole life, even in snowy conditions it's perfectly fine if you have good winter tires. The Main takeaway from our videos is that the LR's benefit isn't range (as the name implies ) but it's power. The extra 200hp is very much felt while the extra 50km isn't really a significant enough advantage for most to spend an extra 7k. Most new EV buyers have range anxiety and that's the biggest thing for them
@jeanbaptistelabelle
@jeanbaptistelabelle 4 ай бұрын
@@Twin.motors the vidéo shows the exact opposite. The Long Range has 20% more range. It also charges much faster. You think 20% is not a lot. I find it significant. For instance, a 700 trip in a AWD in Winter will look like : Drive 3h and 280km, stop 12mn, drive again 1h et stop for lunch for 40mn, drive again 2h30 and stop for 7mn to have enough at destination to not be completely empty. On a RWd, it will be 2h15 driving max (not a lot), 30mn of pause, drive 1h and you stop for lunch after having driven 30-50km less. Then after 40mn you leaves drive again 2h and stop 30mn to make it to the destination. It is a significant difference because stopping 10mn after 2h30-3h if drive is quite different than stopping half an hour after 2h

At the end of the video, the LR has the performance carbon fiber spoiler and the performance badging with the red underline underneath ‘dual motor’. Did the guy put those on after market to a LR Y or is this actually a Performance Y? The results would make more sense if it was a Performance Y being compared to the standard range, as well as the big jump in speed that you’re talking about.

misleading video. NO ONE drives ONLY 130km/h and claims that it is not as advertized as 500km. That number derives from a mixed use of highway and city street. If you drive 80-100km/h, you can get even more than 500km of range.

That wasn't the point of the video. We wanted to see the range at 130km/h. We've gotten more than the WLTP range many times with both these Ys. This is a worst case scenario. Winter tires, 130km/h and 0c degree weather. And the main purpose of the video was to see the differences between them in terms of range.
