What are the correct settings to use to get GREAT audio in the Tesla Model 3? This video will help you to gain an understanding of what immersive sound means; what a 5-band equalizer is all about; setting a 'smiley face' EQ curve; using the balance tool as well some clear explanations for why using a flat EQ curve is not practical when driving in a moving car. This Tip of the Day (#39) is a companion to an earlier video I uploaded a year ago detailing the audio hardware (speakers and amplifiers) that made this the best "sounding" car on the market.

Peter, I've always loved your series on the operation of the Model 3(and now the Model Y of course👍🏾)' and I've always said that when I finally get my dream car I would come back and watch your series again. Well, here I am starting with this one, 4 weeks after I took delivery of my SR+, I will watch a least a video a day as it seems so different now that I have the car vs.watching a million videos as a Tesla fanboy😁. You deserve an award or something for these as they are the best and most detailed explanations of the Model 3 that I've seen. I hope you and your family are doing well (including Red Dragon) and looking forward to more content , peace and blessings!

If you need install help with the auto trunk, let me know as I've done quite a few of them. Best tip is to put the rear soft close latch box on the left side of the trunk opposite of the sub woofer as there is much more room on that side and the control box can be mounted on the fender wall there without having to bubble wrap it and such as you see in just about everyone's install video. Keep up the great tips :)

I may be wrong, but I think the difference between 'standard' and 'high' immersive sound is that 'standard' uses the speakers differently (as you and others have said) but doesn't electronically alter it. I believe 'high' stretches the stereo image, which is very simple to do electronically. Things that were a little to the right move further right, and the same with the left. Just my hunch.

Interesting that you have Immersive Sound on high. I find that it mixes the channels so you lose the stereo separation too much. Of course, this will happen in standard too, but to of a more acceptable level. I really like the 3D effect applied to stereo music, but it depends on the music and how true to original I want it to be.

Interesting video!! I agree that having a 10 band equalizer, Like I use to have in the ... 70's and 80's 🙂 would be pretty cool!! However, now that I have to, occasionally wear darn hearing aids if I am in a crowd, when I listen to my music alone in my M3 Std Range, I like it "CRISP" meaning in the old days I would boost the 5 channels on the right, and I would lower the 2 or 3 channels on the left (Bass stuff) so that I could listen to all the subtle little noises, instruments, in the background!!, Right now I have 2 right channels at 75% max and 2 left channels 75/80% down and positioned slightly back and to the right from my driving position.(Just about behind the passenger's Left Shoulder) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Alan Parsons Project-Pyramid sound DELICIOUS!! (I know I still crank it a bit, but how can you listen the Thunderstruck with Low volume!! 🙂 Thank you for a great explanation!!

Thanks for the info. Your typical EQ settings are very similar to mine and you're right, that immersive sound is fantastic for me too. And yes, Elon & crew, please add presets. Vivaldi and Pink Floyd really need their own EQ settings However, speaking of audio quality, suddenly you sound clipped. Like your mic is either set to record only when it hears sound rather than continuous, or the noise cancellation setting is too high. Really noticeable with headphones on - my default setting at home. :) THX again, M3M (pun time) :)
@model3man
@model3man 4 жыл бұрын
Greg Valunas - Hey Greg! You are so right. And here’s the cause (going to have to change the settings to eliminate that clipping). I am using a Noise Gate plugin, and it is clipping too quickly. In other words, when it hears no voice, it immediately cuts sound level completely. Then when I start talking, the gate opens again and allows my voice through. So the problem is that it is CLOSING the gate too quickly thus clipping the very end of a word or sentence. That is bad and thank you for noticing that. I will fiddle with the settings so I avoid that. You’ve got great ears :)

That was good but as far as the power lift trunk lid I can't imagine why anyone would want that unless they're just unbelievably weak, this is a not a large deck lid additionally one of the best feelings I get from that car is closing that deck lid the way it's shuts so perfectly, at some point power mechanisms just become added weight and power drains as well as junk.....

at low volumes, a v shape may be helpful. however, at high volumes, the bass and treble really tend to become more apparent, so a flat or flatter profile is more desirable if listening at high volume. this is due to the ear being less sensitive to different frequencies at lower volumes.

i missed the part on the video where you got mic measurements and ran them through REW, then adjust EQ settings. Also why shift the balance to the left to make the speakers closest to you the loudest. I would imagine this would skew the hell out of what little time alignment options the cars settings can provide (at least by todays date)

I have seen a lot videos about paint, the outside paint that are easily maintained. But no videos about the paint on the inside of the body. Some parts hasn’t paint at all! Driving on salted Norwegian roads, I have to have my body corrosion protected. I have read about the warranty in the manual, and Tesla doesn’t allow this to be done. I find this a little strange. Try an ABX blind test of higher bit rate MP3s (Spotify's higher quality option is 320) versus lossless FLAC (CD quality) using the USB option in your car. You may be surprised. Most listeners cannot distinguish between the two. If you want FLAC just rip your CDs and load the resulting files onto a USB drive. Ignore those who can "hear the difference"

Interesting video, thank you. Question: Have you noticed the sound of the system change a little bit with some software updates? I got my Model 3 in 2018 and I could swear one or two software updates changed the sound a little bit. I had to adjust my settings to compensate. Not sure if there have been any changes recently though. Specifically, it seemed to make the bass more pronounced and then less.
@model3man
@model3man Жыл бұрын
Yes - that was my experience too! Perhaps they were concerned that bass settings that were too pronounced might damage the speakers and sub woofer system where people just cranked up the volume too high and the sub woofer might become damaged because of that. That’s my thinking on the reason for the change.

What's the best option for audio source, to get the best quality possible? In my current car I use my phone with Spotify, via Bluetooth. But when I play music via USB stick, it sounds noticeably better. Only problem is, controlling music via Bluetooth is better and the music tracks to choose from are endless. I like the fact I can just hop in the car and ask Google to play any song that comes to mind, but only downside is, is that the quality isn't the best. So I feel like, if I was to have a Tesla and upgrade the sound system, would it be a waste of time, because my audio source is from my phone via Bluetooth? Or would it sound great anyway? Or is there a device to buy, that I can have Spotify on, play via Bluetooth and also sound high Def?
@model3man
@model3man 3 жыл бұрын
The sad fact is that the source is all-important. For example, if you put lo quality MP3 on a USB stick the sound would suck. If you put high quality MP3's that you've 'ripped' from your music CDs, they will sound really clear and good. All streaming (especially Spotify) is done at a much lower bandwidth which is why they don't seem to sound quite as good and lack strength in the low end, high end and the harmonics. Sound transmitted from Bluetooth also loses a small amount of fidelity in the transmission. Finally it depends on the quality of music coming from your phone. If you're streaming from Spotify to your phone, then Bluetoothing it to your car, again you are never going to get sound quality as good as high quality MP3's on a USB drive. However the good news is that unless you are an audiophile purist, due to lots of extraneous noise from the road and wind (and passengers) you are not really going to notice the very subtle differences (unless you're driving on your own, at low speeds, and on newly tarred surfaces).
@robertgamble7497

Shouldn’t a “pink noise” source be used to set the tonal quality?
@model3man
@model3man 4 жыл бұрын
Robert Gamble - For more advanced users, there are a variety of methods that can be used to set EQ more accurately - from a technical point of view. But, the problem is this: setting up the audio for best EQ is very different when the car is at a standstill, parked somewhere quiet, analogous to your living room. Then, when you get out on the road, everything changes because now bass gets masked by road noise to give just one example. Therefore, there would be a need to set the EQ differently for long distance on-the-road use compared to stationary use. That is why I have advocated for the ability to save Presets so that I can have EQ that matches different circumstances without having to fiddle with the sliders and lose my previous settings. This would be an easy software fix on Tesla’s part and once they do that (and give us at least a 10 band Equalizer) we can talk about scientifically setting up EQ for different circumstances like audio use when parked; when traveling at speed on a freeway etc. Thanks for your question and support of the channel

Peter, before you do your trunk kit installation. Watch the video recently post by Electrified Garage. Use the 12V power source under the Rear seat. @model3man
@model3man 4 жыл бұрын
nowtleft2 - oh yes, any tone adjustments you make will be saved automatically. However, if you want to set different tone settings for listening to music when stationary, or other tone settings for when you are driving on the freeway, you cannot do that. You have to physically move the sliders up and down each time you want to adjust them. Much better to be able to save different collections of settings as presets.

@model3man
@model3man 3 жыл бұрын
David - I get your point and understand where you’re coming from, but, there’s no way you can play your CDs in the car as it doesn’t have a CD player and doesn’t allow for you to attach one. In any event, you‘d have to bring a stack of CDs with you on each trip. However, you can rip them onto your computer and turn them into MP3 files. Then you can purchase a 500 GB SSD flash drive which can connect to your cars USB port, and you could have tens of thousands of songs on that hard drive. I don’t have better news for you than that. Of course, ripping does involve work and you you would have to copy those MP3 files onto the 500 GB SSD drive. But that way you’d have your entire Collection with you

@@model3man thanks for your prompt reply. Peter, I really don't want the faff of all this work and time commitment at my age, neither do I want to have to shuffle through thousands of songs whilst driving to play the ones I want. I can easily select one or two CD' s within 30 seconds from my collection at home to take with me and then insert and play them almost instantaneously with hardly taking my eyes from the road.....simple & convenient! It seems to me that technology can often be a huge retrograde step with many things....using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. Simplicity is the key to a happy life! Is there no "aux input" facility in the Tesla? Then I could use a portable CD player like a "Sony diskman" ( remember them?) or similar, or is there such a thing of a Bluetooth CD player? I love your videos by the way (now subscribed), they no nonsense, factual & informative, delivered in a relaxing enjoyable style without the product sponsorship and "fill-in" crap that is associated with many KZbin videos these days. Kenneth Jones - Thanks Kenneth. I’m going to try to send that request (for being able to save EQ prefers and for installing a 10-band EQ) to someone who might be able to get it to Elon’s ear :)

Best is a relative term. What is best to you is not what is best to me. You might think that you could adjust it for a "flat" response but usually a "flat" response sounds terrible. I think he did a pretty good job of explaining the basics here. You should adjust the EQ to what sounds the best to you and then be happy.

I would prefer Elon as tonal control for music genre like agreeing, jazz, rock, pop, etc.

Honestly this is a veeeeeery subjective topic. The Model 3 has a "GREAT" sound system. Best in-class for sure, losing out to only flagship sedans like 7 series/A7,A8/S-Class (which also benefit from better sound deadening), really an unfair comparison. Now when it comes to EQ settings: Every sound system will have to be EQ'd slightly differently. This is if you're after ACCURATE sound as it's intended to be from the studio or however the mastering engineer wanted it to be. While you can definitely do this for your listening pleasure you'd need more scientific measurements to conduct these tests and apply corrections accordingly (kind of like how paint correction depends from car to car, similarly speakers, drivers, have slight differences as does the environment they are placed in). The equalizer setting recommended here is popularly known as a "V-Sound signature" and can easily be found in many popular audio brands such a V-Moda and Klipsch audio some like it, some don't. This sound signature tends to compress your mids which can really affect vocals. For electronic music it works fine. What I'm getting at is if you want perfection there's other ways to get it. But honestly your car makes so much ambient noise it's quite a terrible environment to get "perfect sound" from. Just set it to whatever YOU like. Like bass? crank it up! Like your jazz? crank up mids and highs! etc etc. I still appreciate the in-depth walkthrough on the EQ settings as I'm sure many haven't even bothered touching it. Also: EQ'ing should always be down below +0db gain or you'll have clipping in some situations. So don't crank your subs super high. I wish Elon gave us a pre-amp gain so EQing can be performed without losing volume. Immersive sound is great for the theatrical effect and sound separation but it does some weird software trickery which can sometimes lose details in songs. Keep it off if you're a purist or at normal. Cheers from the Island across Model3Man :) Keep the content coming!

Rishab Iyer - Thanks so much for such a detailed reply. I agree with the bulk of what you were saying. And yes, sound is absolutely one of the most subjective experiences in the sense that different people like different EQs of their music. For example, my wife always tells me to turn the bass down. I always want to turn it up. I like it louder; she always wants it softer. Here’s the real problem. If every time you get into the car and do different things (long distance drive; short trip to the store; sitting in the parking lot waiting for wife) you would have to constantly fiddle with the equalizer and lose your previous settings. My strong message (to Tesla/Elon) is to allow for presets. It’s so obvious and so simple to achieve - I can only think its not at all a priority for them. But I am pushing it and sending a request to my contact in Tesla to get my request to Elon’s ears. I think the thrust of my episode was aimed not at purists, but at regular Model 3 owners who just need to use the existing settings better, and who don’t need a sophisticated / scientific approach to getting their in-car sound sorted, but who do need a basic understanding of EQ and the immersive sound feature. And yes, by the way, i do agree that immersive sound feature does some weird things to the strength and positioning of certain sounds including the vocals, but overall, I still find my listening experience is more enjoyable when I use it compared to when i don’t. But that, too, is of course very subjective, and some music comes across better and some not so good when used with Immersive setting on HI.

model3man completely agree. A number of presets (like you brought up) for different occasions/family members/genres would be a very welcome addition. I think a pre-amp would also be great!

@@model3man are the settings saved within each driver profile? If so you could use this as a workaround for presets, by adding a different driver as preset#1 with the different audio profiles but retain all other car settings.

Setting immersion to high makes many songs echoing.

It is true that full immersive setting can affect different songs in different ways - some cause the main vocal line to be overwhelmed by the music elements of the song. However, it is not all or nothing. You can have a moderate immersive sound or full immersive sound and so, as you choose from those, you can see which setting you prefer. It’s not for everyone and some people just like the flat stereo sound. So, try it: if you like it keep it, if not set it back to immersive sound off

The reason increased bass and treble sound better to us is because our ears are more sensitive to midrange. We evolved to tune in the human vocal midrange. By increasing bass and treble, we are effectively flattening our natural hearing "frown" with the equalizer "smile".

Sorry but playing "immersive sound" is a terrible idea if you have any respect for the artists and the recording studio. Google S1nn (A German company who designed the audio systems, they were bought out by Harmon, which in turn was bought by Samsung a couple of years ago) were interviewed. They have spent a lot of time and expertise designing the best possible and most ACCURATE sound system. They explained why the sound system is so good and why an electric car is ideal for good auto sound systems. If you want accurate surround sound by the way, buy SACD disks and play them over a compatible player and you will hear music recorded in three dimensions (hint: much of the time it won't sound much different than stereo, although you may get a better reproduction of the acoustics of, say, a church) When they were interviewed they lamented the "soupiness" that results from using immersive sound because you are distributing the sound around the interior of the car while ignoring how it was originally conceived and recorded but remarked that Americans seemed to demand it. They were also not too keen on playing around with equalizers for much the same reason. They have designed the sound system using much more sophisticated instruments than any of us have access to to optimise the frequency distribution to reproduce the original recording as accurately as possible; they have also designed the audio system and the interior of the car with the same considerations in mind. Yes, you are entitled to your own taste in adjustments, and so are the drivers that turn up their bass to the max, but at least try using the original settings.

You do understand that I strongly recommended against that -8 approach? I thought for a moment that you were thinking I was recommending that. Yes, the V shape (or smiley face) is most likely to give the most pleasing tonal balance :)
