MODELING AND MOTHERHOOD: MY EMOTIONAL MEXICO TRIP • DOUTZEN DIARIES

This is a hard one, because I don’t want to sound like I am complaining about my life. I have a fantastic job that takes me to the most beautiful places in the world, and to be able to have a career definitely makes me a better mom. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t miss my family when I am away from them. I know I am lucky, but it’s always a challenge to find the right balance between being a mom and being a working woman.

I totally get it. I’m an outside salesperson, traveling the country, selling software, with a wife and family at home. I’m on the road about 150 days a year, and feel guilty about missing the little things. My only advice I give others in similar circumstances is, when you get home, unplug from the outside world, and enjoy your family. Get up early and make them breakfast. Sit at the table and have meals together. Drive them to events. Stay involved. You can sleep on your next plane ride.

My mom is a single parent who raised me, she went to office in the morning everyday and came back at 7 p.m. in the evening because her office was far away. I think I cherished all the time when she was at home, which made me respect and value her more. It also made me and my sister much more responsible because we realized what we had was all because of our mother who worked so hard. My sister is a doctor today and I'm studying at an engineering school. Whatever we are today, is all because of her, and because I stay alone in another country, there are days that I just want to be with them but I know whatever my mother is doing for me till date, not even a father could've done that. This keeps me going everyday and I'm just so thankful for her. It's really not easy to put your kids through college with expensive fees and all, but I'm just so thankful and motivated to become her support, and for sure one day I will give her everything that she had to sacrifice for me and my sister growing up.

As a mom of two, i feel the same. I chose to be a stay-at-home mom until they go to primary school. It is absolutely my own choice and i am thankful i am able to be there for them. That being said, i do get a lot of heat about that. A lot of people roll their eyes at me when i tell them that i am a fulltime mom. And that makes me feel like what im doing (being a mother), is not enough.

We are growing up in an everyday more selfish society. I do not like children that much, but I don't go my way spreading hate to the ones who have kids, instead I totally admire the fact that there are people who actually have kids because they want to and are devoting themselves to raise their children with love, our future need good citizens, good people who can give others love and that's why mommies are so important!

Doutzen I totally relate to this. Every time I have to leave them for an early morning flight to our manufacturing plant, it breaks my heart into a million pieces. Doutzen, my daughters are now in their 20’s but when they were young I traveled to sing and speak and was away from my family for a week sometimes two weeks. My heart goes out to you. I can feel your pain. If I may share my thoughts. I think you are incredibly lucky, not because you are a model and travel to great places, but because the time spent away from your kids because of your travels probably contributes hugely to the way you live life to the fullest with them and make every second with them count. Relationship we have with our family impacts our lives so greatly. I have a great relationship with both my parents but my Mum is so special to me. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last year which means I can lose her earlier then I expected and this make me cherish every single moment we spend together ❤️

That thing she said about what her son says... I felt that. My mom had a full time job and also used to travel a lot for work when I was a kid and at night she used to call me to give me my goodnights but I always felt sadder after hanging up with her. Now that I am grown up I feel bad bc she would never stay longer than required bc she would want come home as soon as she could for me. She worked all the time but also always tried to be with me as much as she could and always making her time with me, quality time. I now try to spoil her back all I can, I am so grateful for my mom

It’s so nice though that you even miss them and want to have conversations with them and give them hugs . When I was little I literally remember my mom saying since I was three that I was too heavy to sit on her lap (I was extremely underweight as a child so she just didn’t enjoy having kids . It just warms my heart to see people actually missing their children and conversations with their children and wanting to be with their kids even though they are in paradise . Maybe next time you can bring them or go to Cuba in the awful weather 💕

Upon watching you and this vlog, it hit me that I am like this too and I started crying. I feel guilty about spending time alone because I feel like I am leaving my responsibilities at home. I work all the time and so does my fiance, but the only time I have for myself was every Saturdays, and I feel guilty eating alone, even just going to the mall without my family or my fiance by my side, because I feel like I am depriving them of the time that I could've been home and spending time with them. But also, being with everyone all the time and not being alone even for a moment makes you crave for some time to think alone and just be with yourself. I am all for self care, and I know I shouldn't feel guilty but I do and its kind of messing with our brain because self care should be for YOU, but we're thinking about the people that are not with us. What u are feeling is what most women feel. The struggle in finding balance, to be able to give your 100% to your loved ones, never thinking it’s enough. There is no life handbook and there are no experts on how to balance our work, home, and social life. I can see when you are with your family enjoying the magical moments, you are always present with them. And you have and will have millions of wonderful moments and memories that will last a lifetime. With our jobs, we change courses throughout our lifetime, you will evolve and change but your family, they will always be there, supporting you no matter what. That is unconditional love. And no you don't sound like you are complaining at all, it is natural to feel disconnected from your children and husband, especially when you travel a lot and are apart from them. Oh I can relate to the Facetime thing. I miss my kids 5 days in a row every 2 weeks because I’m a co-parent and we never Facetime because it makes us both sad. It’s good to be with my children and it’s also nice to be on myself. Lots of love!! ❤️
