Armor is usually pretty organic in shape since it follows the human body. Even space marine armor has a decent amount of subtle curvature to it in most parts.
@ArtisansofVaul2 ай бұрын
@Specter_1125 that's true on the chest but not so much on the arms/legs for some of the earlier/mid armour like MkII and Mk IV. Even MkVI is like this but with some slight expansion around 2/3rds of the way down. More importantly this demos the technique for many armour types. The second video looks at Sub D which could also be used to produce the effect you mention. I want to make sure people can't use this series to make any armour style and this is a good way of covering this workflow.

This is fantastic, thank you. Specifically the tips about not using subd, and also using the beveled cubes for circular cuts. I think these will come in handy for intersections too. Looking forward to the next video(s) in this series.

If I ever do start trying to make toy soldier STLs to sell online, any chance of success I might have would be directly attributable to you and the quality of your tutorials. Can't believe how above and beyond even general blender tutorials you are. The specific modelling exercises may well be niche, but any beginner to 3d sculpting that wants to actually be shown how to do the thing without having to pay thousands of dollars and spend years studying would be best served by finding your channel.

@DungeonsNDreadnoughts Nice. It would be something I'd enjoy to do full time but it's a bit of a vicious circle that I'm unlikely to get enough on the Patreon to be able to give up my current job unless I had more time to spend making videos and STL models but I can't get that time without quitting my job. How do you find it as a living? Also anything you'd disagree with technique wise or would have done differently? Different workflows are great to hear about.

@@ArtisansofVaul I could've sworn I typed up a response to this. Weird. Long story short, it is a vicious release cycle on patreon and tribes for sure. It's not something I want to be locked into, but at least I can pay my bills for the most part. The industry isn't nearly as friendly as others. I truly wish that you could find a mentorship or something to help yourself grow. I've become that mentor to several others instead at least. Not really anything i'd disagree with technique wise. I'd have to make a longer response than I have time for currently, but I think you really nailed the basics for sure. Just make sure you look into plugins that can make your life a lot easier and for the love of God, please utilize the pose library.

As an added bonus to the cylinder versus subsurface, curvature of the cylinder would be more protective. If you make a cube and make it a subsurface you get a shape that would be more easy to penetrate. The continuous curve of that cylinder would actually deflect incoming rounds easier due to its more spherical nature. This is true of any cylinder object you make versus any cube object you make, unless you make significant changes to the cube object in an effort to simply make it look like a cylinder anyway. Just think of an egg. Does it have any subsurfaced cube like rounded corners? Of course not.
@Will_Forge2 ай бұрын
I know you were planning on changing that to be more square, and I'm getting to that in the video now. I was just mentioning it because some of the really old school space Marine armor was kind of just ovular. It may not be quite as interesting as a shape, but sometimes not being interesting can be interesting by wondering "why it is designed that way?"
@ArtisansofVaul2 ай бұрын
@@Will_Forge That's a really good tip for certain parts of armour regardless of my plans to manipulate this shape 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@Will_Forge2 ай бұрын
@@ArtisansofVaul And not all armor wants to cause deflections since that means there's an active ricochet to hit somewhere else that may be less armored. So armor often wants to catch the incoming danger and trap it instead, meaning a flat surface is better, like with Kevlar which catches the bullets between its layers. So while it's true that it's a more sturdy shape, it doesn't necessarily result in better armor. In other words manipulate away! Whatever you come up with that looks good can probably also be rationalized just as easily. 😄
