These models observe the spectro-photometric and mass properties of galaxies, and have found widespread applications in astrophysics and cosmology, providing us with the tools to study galaxy formation and evolution both theoretically and through data interpretation.

Claudia Maraston is the UK's top ranked female physicst. She is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Portsmouth.
Claudia obtained her PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Bologna, leading to post-doctoral fellowships at the Ludwig-Maximillian University of Munich and the Max-Planck Institute for extra-terrestrial physics (MPE) in Garching (Germany). She was awarded a Marie-Curie fellowship in 2005 which she spent at the University of Oxford, before joining the University of Portsmouth in 2007 as the recipient of the Marie-Curie Excellence Team Grant.
Claudia designs models for the calculation of spectro-photometric evolution of stellar populations, which are used as a tool to study galaxy formation and evolution both theoretically and through data interpretation. She is the winner of the 2018 Royal Astronomical Society Eddington Medal.

4:44 Ellyptical galaxies seem to be the 1sts formed after the big bang, said the doctor. I read they were formed by successive merges of smaller galaxies, is it a closed debat?

It is an open debate, but it won't be for long. There is evidence both from dynamics and from elemental abundances in stars that elliptical galaxies must form very rapidly, and mostly at earlier times compared to spiral galaxies. However, the leading cosmological model, LCDM containing both dark energy and cold dark matter, requires ellipticals to be the younger objects, formed by "dry mergers" of spirals. This is unlikely (first shown by Daniel Thomas et al., 2005, including Claudia Maraston if I recall correctly; and more recently, Yan, Jerabkova, Kroupa, 2021, with many others in between). A recent review by Frebel & Ji (2023) nicely summarizes that at least for the Milky way (the merger/monolithic collapse stands also for spirals) most stars seem to have formed locally (in situ), with small contaminations from mergers. The community is rapidly converging to the understanding that the LCDM model, while promising at a surface level to explain the "cosmic concordance" (the fact that many independent observational probes point to the same cosmological parameters) is proving to be an incomplete, and possibly skewed, picture of cosmic evolution.

Kind of ironic to have a Christmas lecture about trying to get the universe to come together without God. All we need is for the universe to be mostly filled with dark evidence that we can’t see and we can eliminate the need for the light of God that we can’t comprehend.

How will you find out they're incorrect except by analyzing the data with them? Many theories have to pass review in order to either strengthen or discard them. That's how science works.
