I have struggled with maya for months almost to the point of giving up. You have not only made this fun and addicting but I am learning more in a few days of these tutorials than I have for months from others. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

These videos are really useful for me now (learning Maya with Blender experience). 3:54 There's a second option there - Convert NURBS to Subdiv and when "Keep original" box is checked - it converts with the same topology that shows with curves, so no need to retopologize afterwards. The problem with that is - I don't know how to edit vertices later. Maybe something is locked somewhere... I'll try to find out now.

Okay, after "NURBS to Subdiv" I managed to use "Subdiv to polygons" with Vertices Level 0. It scaled the object a bit, but otherwise works okay.

@@KatereenArt Thank you, it helped me. I'm using 2018 version and there is no retopologize. It worked.

Quick question, to fill the holes why do you need to Extrude and Convert Selection to Vertices before using Merge to Center? I tried selecting the outer edge loop and immediately using Merge to Center and it worked just fine. Is it better practice to Extrude and Convert to Vertices first? Thanks for these amazing tutorials by the way! They've been super straightforward and extremely helpful.

I only have access to Maya 2018, so I don't have the "Retopologize" feature. Could you please provide an alternative to achieving the same effect?

Maya 2018 has it implemented but it's hidden and in beta. 1. Save your work (it CAN crash Maya 2018) 2. Click the object you want to retopologize 3. In the Command Line for Mel (Windows -> UI Elements -> Command Line) Type: *polyRetopo* It's case sensitive btw.

I have one question.. How your viewport displays shadows something like occlusion.. How u did that? How to enable that effect in viewport

I'm pretty sure I cover it in the tutorial. I can't remember where though. Just Google how to turn on ambient occlusion in Maya.

Retopologise hasn't showed up in my menu but it's the recent version of MAYA.

You could try mesh > quadrangulate

Small questions here: 1. How it's possible for you to create a new object while the layer that is not visible is selected - and still see it? I had to create a new layer while making a candle holder because when I turned off the visibility on furniture layer - the candle holder which I had been working at became also invisible. And I can't not select neither of existing layers - one of them would be active anyway 2. When I group smth and then select the whole group through the Outliner - it works as it should: all changes apply to the whole group. But if I click on any of group components in the viewport only this component is selected and all transformations apply only to this element of the group. Is it supposed selection behavior or smth could be done about it? Thank you in advance

1. In the Layer window, click Options and uncheck / disable: *Add New Object to Current Layer* 2. That's the intended functionality as far as I'm aware. If you're looking for it to apply a transform to the entire group, either click the group in the outliner, or select an object and press the *up arrow* on your keyboard. It'll select the entire group that it's in. Shane had mentioned this in one of the earlier parts. If you do not wish do use a group, you could use parenting instead and whenever you select the parent object, all the child objects are selected. You could also use Combine, which will merge all objects into one single object. If you choose this route, you may still edit individual loose objects by going into Face mode and simply double-click on any face. It'll select that entire shell / hull as it's referred to as. There are other ways, but this is the easiest and quickest I've found. Like Shane mentioned in the very first video: there are at least 3 ways to do anything. And he's not kidding :)
