So, Modern art came out in 1992. Which in modern board gaming terms is freaking ancient seeing people talk about games from 2015 as being old. 29 years later, i think this is still the best game with a core auction mechanic out there. Anyone have any suggestions for auction games that would outshine it?

What about High Society?

Did not even get a chance to play it yet, so I can hardly make comparisons 🤣

I also like High Society, not as much as Modern art. But it made an appearance in my "50 things i love about games video" when talking about good small box games.

I've played lots of other auction games, and played games that use auction mechanics to supplement the core game, but I feel like Modern Art still stands as the best auction-focused game at the moment. Plus it feels the closest to real-life bidding haha

Finally a game that isn't a cones of dunshire

At first I thought this was going to be a gag and an ACTUAL summary of modern art in 3 minutes. Close enough really

Getting dangerously close to 4 minutes... I'm watching you! 😉

The rules are 3:00 to 3:59 ;) I can use that whole 3rd minute sometimes. Like Gloomhaven was 3:59 and the original edit was 4:25 because there was so much to cover.

No. Wait. Knizia's best game is *obviously* The Quest for El Dorado! ;-)

Bought this quite cheap a few months back, still on the shelf of shame, but with lockdown ending who knows! I love the idea and can't wait to play the auctions.

Yeah, if i was clever and planning my content more, I probably wouldn't have put out an auction game while so many folk are still in lockdown situations.

Language dependency meter - should you pick a copy in another language? 3/5p Icon/colour/number dependent, text dependent, reading dependent - 2p Minimal private information / Minimal verbal communication - 0p Available rule book in different languages - 1p Zero cultural/political aggression - 0.5p Multiple modern mechanisms - (-0.5)p Can be picked up in another language but the group needs to be able to interact, and not be provoked by putting real artists and museums against each other.

It's classic Knizia - a game wrapped around a single mechanism. Medici and Ra have their fans but I always preferred this one, and I have no idea about newer auction games - Keyflower maybe? The box did fall apart after 25 years or so. It's best with 4 as 3 is incestuous and 5 is too random - the whole thing can be pretty random so It's more superb filler than a "serious" game for me.

Have not tried this one yet. Love Knizia, but im afraid it will bounce of some of my peers as you mentioned. "High society" is my favorite auction game right now.

High society is pretty damned good too

This game looks awesome. But I don’t think my friends would get excited enough about it to make the auctions fun

1:28 - that's not a moneybag, it's a price ticket.

Ah, reminded me of the money bags in an old game show here in NZ

Keen to try a Knizia auction game. What makes you prefer this one over Ra?
@3MBG3 жыл бұрын
Confession time. I've not played Ra. My comment about best Knizia game is based on definitely not having played all of his games.

Heya, am I right in thinking the CMOS version with the explosion head box art has dropped the real gravel for a cardboard token? None of the product listings seem to mention it anymore T.T

No idea, i picked up my copy over a year ago.

Modern Art and Tigris & Euphrates are both essential. Of course I prefer T&E because it's KNIZIA'S BEST GAME
@3MBG3 жыл бұрын
Didn't care much for T&E. I totally get why its popular, but it wasn't my jam at all.

Nice review. The only game with auction as basic mechanic we've played is For Sale. And it's favorite game of my parents. We have so much fun with them playing it and still can't beat my mom in it)
