Apostle Bill Johnson?! Problems with Jesus Culture's pastor/apostle.
Not only does this message cover the first 3 verses of 1 Peter 1, it also provides an overview and unifying theme for understanding 1 Peter as "The Pilgrim's Handbook".
Each week I will upload a new video.
This message is from the Sunday Evening Service at Hosanna Christian Fellowship in Bellflower, CA.

This is one of my favorite teachings here. I come to realize that I can relate to you because we have the same mindset. I struggle with my husband because he focuses more on the end times study. How dark everything will get, he stays more in a serious mindset. I’m slowly getting him to listen teachings like yours to help balance him out. Pastor David Wilkerson is his only Pastor he listens to. Now that is a true man of God! In this time and age there are so many different groups preaching different doctrine. It is good to find people who are preaching from the Bible based on the truth not something changed to suit their own desires. So sad to learn believers are so divided because of that. So many are convinced it is the truth that they embraced. Some are so deep into it. I was one of them thinking it is something from God. Very trusting until this teaching I heard from Todd Bentley and his videos plus all kinds of other demonic attacks. Until now still have to deal with some of the impact, not easy to overcome many times....stressful at times but believing God is still in control. Bless those who are sincerely seeking the truth n help others to see the truth.

No real visual except me being outdoors somewhere, with glorious light suddenly breaking through the clouds- and this huge mounting feeling of “wait, this is IT, He’s coming!” And then, of course, I get so excited that I wake myself up and get in a sleepy five-second pout knowing He’s not back yet. 😆 Naturally, I allege nothing prophetic about this. But I do take such encouragement in knowing that as I walk closer with the Savior, the joy of seeing Him and being swept up to heaven is obviously growing in me. Can’t wait!!

Most believers respect Calvinism and Reformed theology, even if they don't agree with all of it. Even Calvin and Luther didn't always agree with each other. But they studied and showed themselves approved of God. People are born again by hearing the word of God (the Bible) and they believe. You can verify their faith by observing their lifestyle, and humility toward the Scriptures and their fellowship in a church. And you know they are Christians by their expressions of love for both God and other people. Jesus taught us to be born again when he taught Nicodemus in the gospel of John, chapter 3.

Patrick Montgomery Amen, brother! And all I meant was that when you escape an NAR church, you can find yourself going to the OTHER extreme. If it ain’t LITERALLY in the Scriptures, I ain’t believing it. The strict simplicity of Calvinist teachers is a refreshing (literally) spring to drink of. For instance - though I do not have the understanding of predestination and election that he does, I LOVE John MacArthur. One can be drawn to Calvinism (indeed, John Calvin’s writings were the basis of many Protestant denominations, on top of Luther’s nailed treatise), as a reaction, almost, to the free-wheeling charismatic movements of the Health/Wealth “Apostolic” movement.

Hi Mike. Do you think you'd be doing a new video on 'apostles' since youve had 8yrs more insight and study? I agree that NAR and some of their teaching is unbiblical, unorthodox and/or ungodly. But, surely there's a difference between the Apostles (like the NAR) and apostles (genuinely sent ones). Ephesians 4 would suggest the gifts were given until we reach the fulness of the measure of the stature of Christ and amazingly the ministry gifts were given to the church post-ascension. Thanks for what you do.

@@peterread705 You BELIEVE ... now I want you to SHOW how Jesus is getting off of His Throne, coming to earth, to PHYSICLALY VISIT a true Saint, and "send" them into the world ... ... when this was clearly, and only done, 2,000 years ago and teh Gospel is ALREADY matured in the earth. What people "believe" doesn't have much value to me. What is WRITTEN and REALITY are key. Apostles were people who Jesus PHYSICALLY VISITED and commissioned them to go into the world to preach His Gospel. ... not through a dream. ... not through the mouth of someone else. ... not some imagined "vision." ... not a "feeling" OR a "belief" He PHYSICALLY VISITED them and sent them out. That is why Paul defended his apostleship soooo many times, because he was NOT visisted. No one would have accepted him as an "Apostle" ... but to Paul's benefit, *HE HAD WITNESSES* and those *WITNESSES* were all he needed. Those other men testified that Paul was telling the truth. NO OTHER PERSON ALIVE OR DEAD HAD *WITNESSES* (plural). NONE. Today, the peolple (mostly BLACK males in American and also Africa) who claim to be "Apostles" do so as an ADPTED TITLE that they simply claim for themselves. NONE of them were visited. NONE of them have witnesses. And Jesus is NOT getting off of His Throne to come and visit anyone. He SITS until all enemies are made His footstool ... as it is written, and there He remains until all things are fulfilled. So, in the TRUE sense of the word "Apostle," they *ALL* died out 1900 years ago. There are *NO* real "Apostles" living in the world today.

The reasons Paul give in Ephesians 4 for the ministry of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers is "11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ..." You said that Ephesians 4 says he appointed apostles and prophets to get the word out, and since the word is gone out he no longer appoints those ministries, but that not what it says in Ephesians 4. it seems to me that after the fall of Judas, the appointment of Mattais and then the _calling_ of Paul is a parallel to the blessing of Manasseh and Ephraim, also grafted in after the fall of Reuben... and though it would be expected that Manasseh (being the elder) would get _the primary blessing as the elder_ , it was surprising that Ephraim would get the preeminence of Jacob's blessing, so too did Paul play a much bigger role in the historical ministry of Jesus Christ than Mattais. I also noticed that Jesus mentions "kicking against the pricks" which corresponds to the metaphorical language God voices about Ephraim in Hosea 10:11, and Jeremiah 31:18.. the rebellious ox under the yolk, like Paul's "kicking against the pricks" so maybe there is a parallel there.

I don't attend the church I was attending anymore - I had questions about certain things it was not received well. From he will not pray for someone because they did not tithe, he walks around the congregation saying that God is saying things to him regarding them and it appears to be true. To having to speak in tongues. I wanted to understand how this fits biblical as this is all new to me. My cell leader hurried me to go to church as he was going to pray for us to have a baby. I blindly went and let's just say the experience was not delightful. I don't wear jewelry, he kept asking if we are married (not joking) serious. Then tells the church we have to check he says my husband must come up reluctant my husband does, he asked if we still loved each other as I am not wearing a ring, are we sure we do. When my husband said more than 10 years he was taken aback by his expression. He placed his hands on us and said he just needed to get a feel, to connect with us (I was wondering why he didn't just ask). He said nothing but then told my husband that God has been speaking to him and he isn't listening and responding. He said nothing about me. Told us to go and have a baby. I discussed this but didn't mention his name or the church. As I am not attacking his character. Just had questions. I also wrote a lengthy story about a wedding ring and why I don't wear one and my identity as an individual. Without mentioning names. I read Jame 3:13-18 and James 4:11-12 have I violated this?

@@JesusLovesBest I couldn't say if Bethel is heretical. I've been in churches influenced by this movement and heard Johnson speak several times. To an extent, the blessing helped me and others. Indeed, I was a proponent of it. But without good sound teaching and proclaiming the Word it's hollow and potentially dangerous. Decades ago now, before any of this, we were taught by sincere men of God that Spirit without Word blows people up. I'd like to see a balance restored. I miss the great men of the Word like Ern Baxter who I had the honour to hear teach over a whole week when I was young. I've been thinking recently that if there was a serious persecution how many of these millenials would stand without the solid teaching and doctrines. Would I ?

Actually, Mike, the main reason there had to be 12 is that Jesus established the twelve to judge the 12 tribes of Israel: "Mar 3:14 And he ordained ["established" εποιησεν] twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,". In this context εποιησεν means that he "created a polity of the twelve". IE: a "ruling body". Mat_19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Luk_22:30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

On foreknowledge, the word doesn't only speak of a cognisant knowledge of something but an intimate love as we use it as a euphemism for sex. And to take it further, God's aseity, omniscience and omnipresence makes it so that nothing can occur without God's approval and thus He doesn't need to look into the future. He already knows it all for Has determined it all. Man may plan but God orders his steps. God doesn't need to wait for things to unravel

And a question on our freedom then comes in. What we are free to do is to sin which leads us to death but we are not free to choose God because we are dead in our sin. Without God's choosing noone would be going to heaven. No one is good, not one noone looks for God. Noone can come to the Father unless the Father draws him to Himself

A humble critique brother........First, thank you for the teaching. God has given you a gift and so continue and grow in that gift. Regarding Bethel, you are a kind man but clearly too gracious to Bill Johnson. He most certainly knows that glitter is coming out of the air vents. I think the sincerity in his voice is very appealing and can see why so many are deceived and why so many who disagree with him will look the other way or just look at the good while ignoring the bad. It is very possible that while he knows that glitter and feathers are fake, he justifies it in his mind and he thinks it helps people come closer to Jesus. Who knows?.....but given his errant theology he may very well believe that God needs a "kick start" before "true miracles" will take place. Whether this is the case or not, the man is deceived and taking others with him. Regarding Calvinism: I think you latched on to an errant view of faith and used that to refute the doctrine. Calvinists who know their theology do not believe that faith is a work. I will quote a modern day Calvinist RC Sproul Jr. to explain in hope that this helps: Is Faith a Work? FROM R.C. Sproul Jr. Sep 12, 2011 Category: Articles The Reformation was born out of the biblical conviction that a man is deemed just in the sight of God, forgiven, adopted, not on the basis of his own goodness, but on the basis of the goodness of Christ imputed to him. Not everyone, however, is blessed with this imputation, but only those who trust in that provision, and in that provision alone. The debate at that time, and to this day, has been characterized as faith versus works. Though Rome would not affirm, and indeed rightly condemns crass Pelagianism, the notion that we can earn God’s favor outside His grace, she does see a vital role for our personal righteousness, even while affirming that our righteousness is the result of grace at work in us, with which we must cooperate. In framing the debate as works versus faith, however, some miss the very nature of faith. One way to err on faith is in fact to turn it into a “work.” In this error we see “faith” as a substitute for our obedience. This view suggests that in the Garden God required total and complete obedience from us in order for us to be at peace with Him. When that failed, God graciously lowered His standard. Now all that He requires of us is that we trust in Him. The trouble with this view is that it wrongly makes faith the ground of our salvation. We stand before the throne of God and He asks why He should allow us into His kingdom. We boldly reply, “Because of my faith.” God then answers, “Faith? I love faith! People with faith, that’s just the kind of people I want to have around. By all means, come on in.” This error in the end is faith in faith, which faith will surely not save. It makes the cross gratuitous, which is blasphemy. A second error turns faith into a work, and therefore rejects it as vital to our salvation. This view rightly recognizes that it is ultimately the finished work of Christ alone that saves. It rightly affirms that a man is justified because his sins were punished at Calvary, and the obedience of Christ is his. This view rightly affirms solus Christus, by Christ alone. In order, however, to fence off the first error, to be certain we don’t look at our faith as meritorious, it denudes faith of its true nature, turning it into bare assent. This view defines saving faith as agreeing to the truthfulness of the gospel message. This error suffers from two key problems. First, in diminishing the nature of saving faith to bare assent it leaves room even for, in principle, the demons. James says even the demons believe, and shudder (2:19). That is, they know God exists, and hate what they know. It is possible to know something and hate what you know. You can know, you can believe, as the devil himself knows and believes, that Jesus died for sinners, and still not have faith. The second error here is that it doesn’t solve the problem. If we want to denude faith to be certain it doesn’t turn into a work, how does assent not become a work? Just as with true saving faith I am the one believing, trusting, resting, so even if it is mere assent I am the one assenting. In short, if faith is a work, why isn’t assent a work? We avoid both problems when we embrace the wisdom of our fathers, the Westminister Divines. In their Shorter Catechism they ask, “What is faith in Jesus Christ?” and answer, “Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered to us in the gospel” (question 86). Faith is not a work on two counts. First, it is a gift from God. It is not just received by grace, but is a grace. Faith is something God gives to us. On our own it is not possible, for we are dead in our trespasses and sins. And note that our faith has a specific object- as He is offered to us in the gospel.” Second, faith, by its nature, is passive. We rest; we do not work. We receive; we do not earn. There is more to resting than mere assent, but there is not more work. Indeed there is no work at all, just resting and receiving the very ground of our salvation- the work of Christ for us. Rest. Receive. And rejoice.

There was a group of people during Jesus' time doing the same thing. One major difference I see from the Bethel team is honor. What about 1Co. 12:27-31? I think this debunks your perception of what that movement calls Apostles. You mention that an apostle means sent?... Bethel and other Churches in Christ and our brothers as such don't use the title Apostle as you state, but instead as someone who trains, mentors, and sends out. Someone who pastors look to as a mentor and authority because of their walk with Jesus. It's just another office of the Body of Christ, not some mythical seat of power that seeks to own the church. Honestly, out of curiosity i listened to a few of these videos, and it seems that you start okay but then take a hard left towards sounding more like "Ancient Aliens" and conspiracy theory than actual theology. I bless the spirit of God in you and your ferverence for seeking truth and hope that you come to a place of teaching whatever is wholesome and uplifting in sound doctrine without having to attack and accuse your brothers to gain a seat at the table where you already had a place.

1 Corinthians 9:1 does not prove that Apostle Paul was making a case for a general qualification for an apostle. That would be reading into the text something that isn't clear at all. It is just as valid to say that his critics were trying to disqualify him based upon what they had heard about the pre-qualifications for choosing Matthias. All Paul is doing is meeting his critics at their level by saying, if that is what you think is the pre-qualification for an apostle, then I fit that qualification as well. The fact is, he would not have qualified based upon the full criteria stated in Acts 1. Scripture nowhere teaches that the Gift of Apostle was too cease anymore than Scripture teaches that speaking in tongues is to cease. Can both be abused? Absolutely. I think that is is wise not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Disclaimer: Not everyone who claims to be an apostle is one anymore than anyone who claims to be a pastor is necessarily one. Blessings

I want to clarify the debate a little, not get people angry or anything (as I have a tendency of getting, to be honest). I think the issue is why God chose certain individuals. Did He choose them based on something in them (e.g. foreseen faith) - that would lead to Arminianism. Or did He choose them because of His own purposes, but not based on anything in the people chosen - that would lead to Calvinism. Foreknowing has a different meaning in both systems - in the former it means foreseen faith (along with some other things perhaps), in the latter it is a loving act to enter into a relationship with the individual (looking at the OT background in Jeremiah 1). I hope the following comment is helpful: Calvinist also say that God tells people to repent. No one could possibly deny that, the calls are all over Scripture. The issue is whether the natural man is able to repent in his fallen, dead-in-sin state, or is it so that "no one can come to [Jesus] unless the Father who sent [Jesus] draws him" (John 6:44)? Also, can I ask one question? What makes a free will choose God or not choose God? It seems you're asserting that it operates outside of God's decree, meaning God does not determine its outcome. But thank you for posting this study: your teachings have been beneficial for me and I am glad you speak so kindly and truthfully. God bless!

couple of issues/false statements in your comment: • "I think the issue is why God *chose* *certain individuals*." • "Did He *choose* them based on something in them (e.g. foreseen faith)" • "Or did He choose *them* because of His own purposes" • "but not based on anything in the *people chosen* " • "in the former it means foreseen faith" • "a loving act to enter into a relationship with the individual" • "The issue is whether the natural man is able to repent in his fallen, dead-in-sin state" • "no one can come to [Jesus] unless the Father who sent [Jesus] draws him" out of context - danger OWN IMPLICATION What does "chose/choose/loving act" mean in the biblical context(e.g eph 1 etc.) and "certain individuals/them/people chosen" ? "the natural man is able to repent" → God commads now to all men to repent. John 6: 40 → John 6:45 → John 6:51 → John 3:16 → John 6:63-65(J12:32) → Rom 10:14-21 → Romans 3:21-31(→Romans 2:4) God knows everything.

On the predestination segment, and I want everyone to know that I don't really know what the Christian doctrine is on this, or if I'm in any way close, but a thought I had is that maybe it's talking about God choosing to create us in the first place in addition to us choosing him. If we pretend time travel is possible, and someone goes back a couple hundred years, that person's interaction could cause minor changes that prevent some purple from being born and other people who don't exist currently to be born just but interfering with the timing of people's relationship to each other. Those people never existing mean that an of their descendants no longer exist, and the other people coming into existence mean you now have relationships that couldn't have existed before the time travel happened. Very quickly you get a world that had none of the people is currently does. Similarly, if God had created this world ever so slightly different from what he did, we wouldn't be here at all. Being omniscient, He would know all the variants of His creation, and He chose the one that includes me, the one that includes you, the one that includes every other person that has ever lived, is currently living, and will live in the future. Exactly why this world of people as opposed to a world of different people we can't say, but He chose us, now we just have to decide if we want to choose Him.
