Though life has dealt Modern Family's Claire the cards that (initially) keep her at home with her three kids, she actually doesn’t fit the stereotypical housewife mold. So how did she become the perfect husband-wife?

The episode where Luke mistakenly thinks Claire and Phil are splitting says it all, I think: When Claire assumes that Luke wants to stay with Phil because he is the 'fun parent', and Luke corrects her and says, '... I think dad would need me more....' That small 10 second bit of the scene is so touching, because Luke seems to think that his dad isn't as emotionally strong as his mum and therefore wants to be there for him, but as soon as he says it, Claire tears up herself.

I really like how this video gives Claire a lot more credit than I felt that she deserved. I always felt that some people would go a little too far when they say Claire doesn't deserve Phil because he's more laidback, more emotionally present and less controlling. But Claire's personality shows that the family needs that kind of personality sometimes to keep things from falling apart.

That's because Phill make sure she will not cross her line with them, We seen it on multiple occasions Phill had to stop her or at least slow her down when she was about to do something extreme. Remember when she was allowing Haley to go out with a grown man? Just to teach her a lesson (by the way she was going on all about her hunch.) That's not good parenting, That girl was already the lowest point of her life and felt like everyone in her family hates her including her dad who she loves the most. At that time it's not suitable let's say ignore your child.

@RUR Nope, if you gotta stop someone from dying and manage their affairs that is not the role of a child. Stay-at-home mothers do a lot of "work"-- or else, why would dishwashers, maids, and nannies be 3 separate full-time careers? Also, both bring in income (Claire was working and invested money she saved up prior to motherhood, then went back to work; Phil has also had bouts of working/making little income in the past). They are balanced in my mind because they contribute equally to the family structure-- both are necessary.

I've always felt that the comparison people give between Claire and Gloria to be unfair, sure Gloria is very fun and loving but she's not dealing with 3 growing kids who all have so different personalities and needs. Claire is very open to her kids, she gives them the support they need and is trying very hard to not have the same the relationship she had with her parents especially her mother with her kids. I also appreciated how she opted to go back to work after the kids were all grown up showing them it's OK to change your life however many times you want if you need to and that time she tried running for office she showed them its OK to take chances. The person who I feel wasn't given much attention on the show was Alex, especially as she got older. Luke and Manny were given more showtime and as they got older their stories also kinda became drab. (Edit) re-watching this breakdown a year later, I really wish the show gave us more of the relationship between Claire & Alex, they both have very similar personalities, perfectionist, hardworking, obsessive, nitty picky, very methodical and straight minded in their approach to things & you can see their similarities as Alex comes into her own, she is very much her mother's child. Claire is to Alex what DeeDee wasn't to her, instead of competing with her she encourages her to be her powerful self

I think Claire's tendences to "crush" Phils dreams and beeing sometimes cruel are similar to how Mitchel acts with Cam. They both were raised in unhelathy environment as kids and took a lot from Jay, even tho Mitch was not so close with him. The only reason why Mitch and Jay did not act THAT cruel, because their partners are less emotionally developed and sometimes over-react. So in order to keep peace in home, Mitch and Jay try to not upset their partners that often, while Phil are the one who often does not mentioned when he is hurt. Hence, Claire does not have a tendency to keep some things for herself. And all of Pritchets were ctisized for that kind of behaviour, for example, in episode, where Cam, Phil and Gloria turned out to have some sort of allianes to hide their mistakes from Pritchets.

This is what worries me about being a Mom. I have ADHD and people have compared me to Phil before I even watched the show because of my personality, and I’m a woman! I’m worried that because mother’s tend to be automatically expected to be more responsible, my personality would be less fun for the kids (the way it would be if I had the expectations of a father) but instead stressful and annoying since as a woman my role is to be more meticulous. If I’m bad at keeping track of those kinds of things, who else will? Men often just don’t take care of certain things in relationships but because of how my brain is wired I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to step up (I can’t be someone I’m not.) Hopefully whoever marries me knows what he’s getting into, but since we do sort of expect certain things from women, I’m worried it would be fun just us but after having kids he might feel like I’m “failing” some motherhood standard (that men with my same personality don’t really get held to.) It’s part of why I’m nervous about having kids.

*TROPE SUGGUESTIONS:* *-The Fallen Woman Trope:* Specifically, how it contrasts with the Fallen Man trope. When a male character goes down a dark path, he's treated with sympathy, like his tragic fate was inevitable (i.e. Walter White, Michael Corleone, Macbeth). But when it's a woman (i.e. Anne Boleyn, Lillith, Britney Spears) the attitude is always "Well you had this coming, b*tch." *-The Sibling Rivalry Trope* (examples: Thor/Loki, Cain/Abel, Zuko/Azula) *-The Weird Boy Trope:* There's a duality to this trope. On the positive side, you have characters who contrast with toxic masculinity like Edward Scissorhands or Jughead Jones. Just like Claire, Lynette was a very driven woman who had a high powered job before she married her husband Tom (who just like Phil is laid back and chill, if not a little dopey) and they started a family. Very much like Claire, Lynette resents being a homemaker especially since she has to take care of her three sons and a daughter all by herself and they are a real hand-full. Throughout the first season of Desperate Housewives, Lynette has to take care of her troublesome kids while also missing her days as a rising executive. In TV shows, normally it is the wife that insults the husband and this is played for laughs. Why can't we have the reverse of that sometimes? Wives on TV get away with flirting with other men more than husbands do. And it is usually the husband that talks about how great the wife is and gets her gifts. It is ironic how all of these things that are seen as normal for husbands are seen as insulting toward the wife when things are flipped.

Claire is probably an ESTJ or something and Phill is an ENFP. And I love that we see more feeler man represented and thinker woman. Because in real life these type of couples excists too. People often fall for qualities they don't have themselves so no mather the sexist stereotypes we had been shown in patriarchy about how woman want very masculine man and men want very feminine woman.

There's this episode, where the 3 families about to catch up, with Claire and Mitchell rushing their families out the door. Cam says to Mitch, "ugh your such a Pritchet". Mitch goes, "what's that supposed to mean?" And then it cuts to Jay rushing his family out the door 😂 My Grandad was in the army so of course he, my Mum and I are all highly strung people. I want to add that I always thought Phil was very in touch with his emotions and hence able to bond with everyone on a great level. Something that Jay has envied about him from time to time. The Take, I love what you guys are doing. Could you please do a video on this topic? The Pregnant Woman trope in the horror genre, such as: Women getting impregnated by aliens. Women turning into bloated hives for alien reproduction. A woman giving birth to a demonic child. A woman carrying a baby for an evil cult. Even men getting impregnated by an otherworldly seductress. Misogynist, sexist, rape culture, shock horror or just pushing a fear of aliens and demons? Alien vs Predator: Requiem and Slither are all levels of wrong. Don't forget about Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The X-Files. (For anyone who reads this, I would like to know your thoughts)

Buffy the vampire slayer did soooo many things right. i admit that the show wasn't perfect all the way but it has something that makes it one of THE best teen shows which can be enjoyed by all groups. Buffy Anne summers isn't the stereotypical annoying female protagonist but she is relatable - in a way. not all of us randomly discover that we are the chosen one but we could relate to her troubles more than often. she goes through bullying, struggle, love, heartbreak, depression, loss and DEATH!? i may not be very fond of Dawn but i liked some parts of their relationship which i think many siblings might relate. they are kinda annoyed of each other, they are in different stages of life but they surely know when they need each other. her mom is one of the best depictions of TV mom. now coming to the Scooby gang, EVERY SINGLE ONE had a perfect character arc. yes, Xander might fall into the trope of male gaze, but it was the 90s and let's be honest, once he saved the whole world and then in the last season he saved what was left of sunnydale - the protectors. we saw willow go from a shy stereotypical nerd to transform into one of if not THE powerful witches and a goddess. we saw her process her grief. sometimes it was painful and other times she failed to distinguish between right and wrong. we also saw willow fall into the greed of greater power. and discovering her sexuality was quite sweet. these things made her relatable to me. Giles was the father Buffy never had. Angel was sweet and protective, Angelus was terrifying and a good villian, dark Angel was compelling ( i know it was on angel, another great show for a mature audience, but as long as it is in the buffyverse, imma consider it). Now let's talk about Cordelia chase. her character arc was a treat to watch especially when she used to let guard down and not be mean to others. Wesley was good too. Faith's arc made me root for her in a way i never imagined i could. Spike is the OG bad boy. drusilla and Darla are excellent villains too. let's talk about storylines. i love how it was a running gag that most of the time Giles would be a victim of any monster of the week. which brings me to my next. the show depicted most of our struggles with the monsters as metaphors but never lost its humour. there were some bad and very bad plots but the tone and the main characters, except Riley and that professor, made it fun and bearable. Coming to the cast, it was a treat to watch all of them grow and mature as actors throughout the season. P. S. i didn't include anyone else from Angel because none of them were directly connected to our heroine, the one and only *BUFFY ANNE SUMMERS* .

It's just that women get pregnant, so the writers ask "what would happen if some alien or demon impregnated them". It's as simple as that. It isn't an attempt to disrespect real women. It's just a story telling device.

It's body horror. "A common difference in the body horror genre is that violations or distortions of the body are rarely the result of immediate or initial violence. Instead, they are generally marked by a loss of conscious control over the body through mutation, disease, or other tropes involving uncontrolled transformation.[7] The genre can invoke intense feelings of physical and psychological disgust, or squick, and play upon anxieties of physical vulnerability.[8] In addition to common tropes used within the broader horror genre, some tropes specific to the body horror subgenre may include invasion, contagion, mutation, transformation, disease, mutilation, or other unnatural or violent distortions of the human body. Just a reminder that there's no father, mother, wife or husband role. Gender in of itself has no impact on a parent's or partner's personality or abilities. We may often categorise behaviours as being motherly or fatherly, "wifey" or "husbandy"... but in the end - there's no real basis for those ideas. They only exist as concepts because we say they do. There's just people, who they are and what they do. Remember that humans are far too complex and interesting to fit on a binary scale! :)

Claire reminds me a lot of my own mother, they even look similar. Both my parents have always worked (that’s the norm in my country) and my mom is absolutely the more dominant figure compared to my dad, who isn’t as childish as phil but still playful and i think more in tune with other people’s emotions than my mom might be sometimes. She’s also incredibly solution oriented, like Claire, and i saw a lot of the same dynamics in her relationship with haley which we had too. I just love that the show allows Claire to 1) not be a very ”natural” parent, showing that motherhood is something that needs to be learned and 2) be dominant without being demonised for it. Both Claire and Gloria are like that in some ways, even if gloria’s dominance is more stereotypical, and i love that Claire’s behaviour is called out when it needs to be, but also shown to be her way of expressing love through trying to be protective and guiding.

I swear she is so much like my mom! Analytical, awkward with emotions, practical. Only my dad being as emotional as he is, didn't take on a motherly role either, feeling awkward about it as well and saying "you should go to your mom for this". Unfortunately they couldn't find a way to make it work between them and separated when I was 12. One thing I acknowledge is that thanks to them (and others in my family) I've grown up not believing in any kind of gender stereotypes.

This movie is one of my all-time favourite comedies, mostly because of Cameron performance. Even though in real life we would hate a person that acted like her character but at the same time I really liked her uniqueness in comparison with how women are usually portrayed in movies made by man, which makes her character refreshing. She is kind of like Charlize Theron character in “Young Adult” but if it was a comedy.

One of the most underrated moments of the show is when Luke writes Claire is her hero and makes her recognize the lens her kids sees her through. All the moments when Alex asks her to be unabashedly herself and Haley being scared to tell her that she is pregnant, and Ben and Dylan being scared of her approval shows a lot about her strong personality, which I absolutely love about her. Women get a lot of hate if they portray any of these characters (which Claire is getting too.) but at least writers were not scared to stick to.

This is perfect timing since I just started rewatching Modern Family 😊. The timeline is kind of weird/there are some continuity errors with the references to Claire and Phil’s relationship. In either season 1 or 2 they mention that they eloped at the court house when Claire was about 4 months pregnant. Based on Haley’s age in show she would’ve been born in December 1993, and that means they would’ve gotten married in July 1993. In season 5, Phil says that he proposed in March 1994? I’m guessing the writers forgot and accidentally messed up the dates. Either way, I love Modern Family and it’s one of my all time favorite shows.

What I disliked about this show is how it treated the women much worse than the guys in terms of judging them, and you can see this with how the audience treats them as well Phil does shtty things constantly but its always played off as harmless and funny, but if claire makes a mistake or acts badly then the whole episode is about that flaw and how she needs to grow from it. Claire objectively is a better parent and partner than Phil, but they still work well together and yet you have people saying that Phil deserves better? The same phil that flirts with other women, including his wife's step mom, constantly. And the same Phil that puts all the pressure of being the responsible parent on Claire all the time? This also happens with Gloria, but to a lesser extent. At the very least they portray Jay as being a better husband than PhiI. And Jay often goes out of his way and out of his comfort zone for GIoria and manny, which you rareIy see with PhiI

It's always been that way for the most part. The guy's traditional role was just brings in the money that keeps the lights on, possibly working numerous jobs into a heart attack in their mid to late 50s depending on the situation. I grew up around plenty of family where the dads would always been in the back room sleeping when you came over because he just came off a shift or has another one lined up in a few hours and needed a nap. That's where the joke of "ask your mother" came from. The dad didn't care because he's not the one with the money anyway. It's the family's money for the wife to control. Flash forward to today and guys regularly joke about asking wives for permission to buy fishing poles or a motorcycle to take out in the weekends. The wives hardly ever joke because it's their money now in the first place.

I have sometimes accused The Take, though always interesting, of being too orthodox and unnuanced in their feminism--like when they suggest that "...we can't help feeling vicariously empowered watching "Gone Girl"'s Amy Dune frame and murder people"… (With that I DON'T Agree!) But I think with this video they got a really nice, nuanced balance. They are laying out a narrative that creates room for women to be more "masculine" in some ways and for men to be more "feminine" in some ways; without trying to generalize that or simply reverse the enforced rules of the sexes. (Or deny statistically likely differences.) They are basically speaking in favor of letting everyone play from their strengths and acknowledging that everyone is different and has different talents. Some men have talents that are traditionally thought of as feminine and that doesn't make them less of a man--and vice versa for women. It's not just reversing the roles as some kind of payback centuries of sexism. It's *Actually* trying to create a world where people can be three dimensional, real human beings...

I think Modern Family highlighted very well with Claire how unfair it is that the traditionally female role of the family nurturer also comes with the obligation to take all the parts of parenthood that are 1. not fun at all and 2. make you the strict/not fun/bad parent. This starts with making sure the kids eat healthy (and not too much "fun" foods like fast food and candy) to disciplining bad behaviour and being in charge of the household running smoothly. It's an incredibly exhausting and unthankful role. Also, many people seem not to understand that Phil is able to be so laid back and fun not despite but BECAUSE of Claire being the high-strung, disciplined one. You could see that in the episode where they switched roles and suddenly Phil had to be the strict parent, he completely swung to the other extreme by not letting the children eat before they didn't finish their chores. I wish The Take would also do a video about Alex. She is perfectionist and ambitious to an extent that way overtakes Claire and therefore also very high-strung because she constantly overworks herself. Especially when she gets older, that leads to her family highly relying on her to take on an authorative leading role and keep the family on track while at the same time labelling her the not-fun/bummer one. Because she is an overperformer, she is not just expected to be fine on her own (i.e. needing less focus and support that Haley and Luke) but also to take responsibility for her family in a way that she's actually far too young for.
