damn you just got yourself a new subscriber. came across your channel through your stray videos (very interesting btw) and saw this recommended after. first of all thank you so much for speaking up about this topic, not only in gaming, but regarding literally everything, people seem to only see the negative sides and none of the good sides anymore. and i really can't stand it anymore. i think at some point a few people realised, that negativity makes for good clickbait and then everyone just joined in on it. it's terrible. back to the video, very impressed by the amount of research you did, you really know your stuff. i agree with you completely on all points too, again, not just in game development but in almost every creative field we are in the best era right now. creating and accessing games has never been easier and cheaper before. it's true that a lot of aaa games lack creativity and innovation, but then just don't play those. there are soooo many insanely good indie games out there just waiting to be discovered. yeah that's all i got to say, you really spoke from my heart. y'all stop that pointless negativity already.. we do have some serious problems, but not everything is bad nowadays, so why make those good things out to be bad things :)

I've always been quite pessemistic about modern video games, your video has provided an insightful look into another perspective of the debate. For me, I've felt that there's been a shift over the last decade or so towards modern gaming becoming a profit driven endeavour on the whims of executive bodies rather than primarily 'fun-driven' efforts from video game developers. Modern triple A video games are definitely high quality, but they don't take any meaningful risks. From my perspective, nothing seems to stand out to me when I watch the online expos and live events of publishers showing new games one after another, often remakes, remasters or sequels of older franchises being built upon with not much more change than 'better graphics' and a change of scenery. But then again the genres I enjoy are quite out there, and so maybe that's why newer games don't entice me so much. Your point about Games as a Service confused me a little, and it would help me if you clarified your point on exactly what a 'game as a service' was. As you correctly pointed out, the term can feel like a buzzword nowadays and so it could be easy that we both have two different viewpoints on the matter. From what I understand, games a service refers to the reliance on and requirement of a third party for the functionality of the game. An example of this would be an online server hosted by the publisher/developer that the game needs a connection to in order to play, such as World of Warcraft, or Fortnite. However, from your examples, you make the point that games as a service allows for things such as bug fixing and DLC to be added to games. However you can still update games or add DLC to them while letting the game not be reliant of a third party server, though that's just my own personal definition, and it seems the term has diluted heavily. If you want more information on why I feel rather adamant against games as a service, there's a very good (but long) video about it called "games as a service is a fraud" by accursed farms. All that negativity aside though, I agree that the modern video game industry as a whole isn't all doom and gloom like people harp on about. After all, we're still here playing and (hopefully) enjoying it!

To your first point, I think it has to do with our age and knowledge of games. When you are young, you just play a game and it all seems so magical and expansive. But now that we are older, we know about the ghost inside the machine and how it all works, all the cogs and mechanics. We understand that when we see a character and any interaction in games for that matter, it's just lines of code and we understand that there are limitations to that code. Case in point, as a kid GTA games felt like you could do anything inside of them. However going into them now, I realize that there is a limited amount of stuff to do besides roleplaying or something like that. Regarding your second point, I would agree that Games As A Live Service is a very broad term, but in my personal definition I wouldn't really have to expect reliance on constantly being online or a third-party launcher unless it's a multiplayer only game. By Live Service I just mean that a game is getting constant updates after release, through Steam for example. These updates allow for bug fixing, adding new, smaller content, maybe making monthly roadmaps like some games do which are not even multiplayer. Glad you're enjoying gaming these days! I am the same, I've been playing Cyberpunk a lot these days and just did a 100% run :D I would for sure say, that despite all problems, Cyberpunk is one of the best games of all time. That's a good example for games as a live service - Cyberpunk is getting constant updates like every three months which are not really DLC but add important stuff - for example when the Edgerunners anime series that's tied to it came out, they added a few little quests, weapons and stuff like that. They also added transmog! I doubt a dev could release such a small content pack on a disc, and also it's important to note that it's free of charge.

Damn man, that was very good video. I agree with you in most of your sayings. Today you can have a pretty good gaming experience just by buying console/Pc, due to free games that are available on Epic games, xbox live. The part with the laggy games with insane graphics full of tiny little pieces annoys me badly, because they are not crucial for the experiance in my opinion. Luckily in this era you can just mod the game and strip it of its "good" graphic. Keep going man, respect your work.

Of course there are many good games still being made. I think what many people mean when they say modern gaming is bad, is that most AAA games are either released completely unfinished or have no identity, no innovation, nothing to remember them for, to much hand holding, ridiculous "wokeness" and basically are the produkt of some psychoanalysis of what makes a game gud. Many agree that there are some exception like eldenring and ofcourse indi games

I would say that the bad games are the exception - we have so many amazing games to play these days but it's so easy to focus on a few negative examples. As I said in the video, if you type in "Modern Gaming" in the search bar, there will be so so so many results akin to those I've shown. It's just pointless negativity. In these discussions people don't really mention emulation, mods, indie gaming, how easy it is to develop games these days, etc. A big problem with negativity is that it's like a train - someone says a game is bad and many people just jump aboard and hate it without ever really playing it.
