(Modern) Hollywood hates Romance

I've noticed a trend in the last few years with female empowerment shows and movies. They typically don't include a romance. And if there is a male side character, they usually play second fiddle to the female and know it.
Even before that, love stories were slowly becoming twisted and toxic onscreen to the point of being unwatchable.
In this video, join me as we discuss the three reasons why modern Hollywood seems to hate romance so much and why this is a very bad thing for storytelling.

They want to divide people and break them so then they can: A. Make us easier to control. B. Make us think that they're heroes when things get even slightly better (if that's possible). C. Extract more money. This goes for both sides of the government. They gotta keep us fighting each other so we don't start looking at them.

Yep, though in fairness today's audience, weaned on narcissistic social media, and two-dimensional 'Superhero' movies, also bears some responsibility. After all, who still cares about things like romance, chivalry, honor and sacrifice, or even any kinda basic 'attachment'... when it's always "All About ME"?!
@nerychristian
@nerychristian Жыл бұрын
@@klowen7778 It's mostly women who have that "all about me" attitude. I mean, just look at women's social media profiles. They are constantly taking pictures of themselves- whether fully clothed or half naked. Even women with husbands and children are constantly taking selfies. I grew up in a time when people had film cameras. And I remember that people used their cameras to take picture of their family, of nature, of important events. But now people have become so shallow that they only take pictures of themselves, or of their restaurant meals, or their vacations on yachts, or traveling in Europe. All these pictures designed to make them look better than they really are.

I couldn’t disagree more. Just because some people have had bad luck finding a good person doesn’t mean that romance isn’t real and powerful and important. And while not ALL media NEEDS romance, I don’t think it ever hurts the stories or characters when written correctly, and often makes it better, more powerful, and more enjoyable in general, at least for people like me who aren’t cynical and jaded. I believe in romance. You should too. Also the “that’s nice” sounded slightly dismissive. Hopefully you didn’t intend it to come across that way.

It's a bit contradictory to per feminism demonize men as responsible for all of womens' problems and then turn around and depict a romantic relationship with said men. And the ending of She-Hulk, where she kidnaps DareDevil into her new reality as a sex partner 'because a woman has needs' is another good example of the 'sex only' relationships of modern female hero characters.

What I find most interesting as of late is how happy these actors are regarding the lack of romance. Like, why are you SO happy about your character ending up alone? Why are you so glad that your character isn't going to end up with this man who cares about her and sees her as one of the most important aspects of his life? Why is that a good thing??? Makes no sense.

Since no one's mentioned this in the comments yet, I'll say this is one of the reasons for the growing popularity of Korean dramas. The Koreans make unabashedly romantic shows across many genres from fantasies like "Alchemy of Souls" and "Hotel Del Luna" to contemporary dramas like "King the Land," "One Spring Night," "Itaewon Class," and "My Liberation Notes." Since Conflict is an essential part of storytelling, Korea offers a unique setting for romantic stories since it has slammed hard into the future from its patriarchal and rigidly class-structured past, so that many of the shows feature a "lower class" woman and an "upper class" man (a Royal in the shows set in past times or the son of a conglomerate magnate in contemporary stories) who have to navigate family issues and class structure as well as finding out what they truly want individually as well as from a relationship. The characters often have huge trust issues due to being burned in the past and a good chunk of any series usually involve the pair testing each other to fiind out what kind of people they really are and if they'll have each other's backs when the chips are down, and make no mistake, the women in these shows are no pushovers and have to show as much courage, sometimes more, than the men. The length of most shows (anywhere from eight to sixteen hours) give the writers plenty of time to explore the characters and the situations so that you really become involved in the characters' plight and setbacks and are on tetherhooks from one episode to the next waiting to see how they'll overcome the obstacles thrown in their way. Another huge difference is that the Koreans take sex seriously. It usually doesn't take long for western characters to jump into bed, but for Koreans the end goal of a relationship is marriage and children so that falling in love means establishing a life-long committment to one another. Even holding one another's hand is a significant sign that this is more than a friendly relationship, and it can be a scary moment when they do because it means the relationship is turning serious with all the problems it will entail. For all you busted romantics out there, I urge you to start looking at some of the many Kdramas out there. I did over a year ago and have never looked back.

As someone who genuinely likes love stories, it's disappointing that Hollywood's obsession with deconstruction has finally caught up to romance. They're either toxic, ignore it entirely, or are kept to the barest of minimums. What's sad is that even the Mario Movie, one of the better modern movies, sort of did this, with literally the first scene they share together being a cheap subversion of "love at first sight." And what comes after being kept to the minimum.

The publisher rejected, informing me that they were not interested in traditional princesses, that they were looking for something new. What new, I asked, after all Leia Oregana and Fiona already existed. Never mind. A woman nowadays in the West has no right to be delicate, feminine, needing the protection of even a professional bodyguard. Heck, I, as a woman, couldn't write a female character the way I thought she should be. The ideology was wrong. I don't understand what's wrong with a woman who doesn't want to be a soldier, doesn't want to beat up every man and wants to find love and live happily with her family.

Two things about romance that I think the modern girlboss crowd loathes are vulnerability and depending on another person. Being vulnerable means showing (more) emotion, uncertainty, and (dare I say) a form of weakness, something you would normally reserve for only the people closest to you. Leaders need to be stoic, act with certainty, and appear strong to those around them, yes, but when in the company of just their romantic partner, they feel safe enough to open up because they know it won't ruin their image or reputation, and they'll receive comfort and honest feedback. As a result, they depend on their romantic partner to help them through these dark times. The girlboss doesn't like this because they think being strong means 100% stoic, aggressive, and depending on no one but herself. She doesn't _need_ anyone else. The irony being is that many stories have been about getting the stoic and aggressive man who depends on no one but himself to open up and accept help and comfort from others (like Beauty and the Beast).

I just wish that politics weren't injected into everything. Not everything needs to make a political statement. People should be able to escape when enjoying entertainment. Take the 2000s Spider-man trilogy, it's lessons and themes were for everybody. It felt a lot more human rather than something spit out to check a list off. Maybe not as much with the 3rd one lol. The problem of it being political is because it's an intentional action being done to change the minds of people over what ought to be considered the societal norm, or normal. They WANT people to forget about legitimate femininity and masculinity, in favor of this grotesque slop, because to the people behind these actions, these are remnants of a period in human history they want gone. You really can't hope for something not to be political when you yourself have issues with the blatant attempts at trying to force the norms of society to change to what suits the ideological ideals of the people behind these actions.

What is think is hilarious is that the people writing these characters seem to think that independence, power and leadership cannot go hand and hand with love and femininity. I am amateur writer at best but even I know that a women who has a high position in a chain of command can be powerful in her own right and still return home to be a caring wife or mother. It’s not black and white. Just some examples from the people I know: My mom is a director for a large pharmaceutical company but she still takes the time to get her hair done, get her nails done, go on dates with me dad and have mother daughter days with me. She is serious and stern at work but kind and caring at home, and vis versa. My friend works two jobs to support herself, she gets up at early times of the day and returns home much later yet she still does it everyday. She is independent and hardworking but does it all so she can buy a house and have a family with her fiancé. I’m not saying every women is the same in fact the complete opposite. Some women could care less about work and independence, some stay at home, or never work or never strive to be anything than what they already are. Some spend hours, days, weeks, months or years to achieve their goals. Some are ceos, some are bakers, some are teachers, some are scientists. You can never define a person by their gender, a singular trait. Everyone is usually a bit of everything. Edit: Alright rant over, sorry for how long this is lol

Having a woman be in a relationship implies some kind of domesticity. What if she gets pregnant? She'd have to stop or curtail the fighting and be a mom. Xena got pregnant and abandoned her child. I think Disney has some strange issues with women of color esp black women being princesses. Lately, Ive noticed that the more diverse the cast is the less likely there will be marriage or romance. King Tchallah didn't marry the mother of his children. Black Ariel doesnt marry Prince Eric, and Snow Brown probably wont have a love interest. I know there are a few exceptions in the past, but I feel like when main characters were white women, they made sure those women got married, got the Prince, or what not. Black women are baby mamas and situationships.

You are correct. I am a hispanic male. But I realized that Disney was "truly racist". I saw that Princess and the Frog movie in the theatre. And I couldn't believe how poorly they treated the main character. First, they chose not to make her a real princess. Then they turned her into a frog for half the movie. They have never done that with any other Disney princess. Then the man in the movie who is supposed to want Tiana, turns out to be a nobody. He is not a real prince either. He is a sleaze-bag, a player, and a con man. Hollywood claims to love minorities, but won't give minorities good characters in movies. They are usually made the comic relief of the movie.

She also didn't like boys throughout the movie & imagined herself as graduation from an all female school. The actress was a white girl. Disney also owns Marvel & Stars War where the female characters are Mary Sues & are arrogant like Captain Marvel.

This ugly phenomenon carries over into the sports world as well. I was both struck and sickened by the ugly poster that was plastered all over the internet of the US women's soccer team in advance of the game that they lost today. All of the most opinionated, big shot players on Team USA were posed with their arms crossed, and with menacing scowls on their faces. The looks on their faces were revolting - as if they were on their way to a gang fight; instead of a mere soccer game. Granted, that takes place in men's sports all the time too. Nothing ever gets better in this area, we just go further and further downward.

The worst thing about Hollywood writing today and the people doing the writing is that it's no more than an angry tirade against 'the established Norms of society'. It's a rebellion, a backlash. But it's nothing more than that. It has nothing to say, nothing new that we don't already know and (largely) either accept or 'tolerate'. It turns what's there upside down and offers up a twisted version of the original narrative but it itself has nothing to offer; no new revelation about how we should treat others or how men and women should be with each other or how we treat those weaker than us and have no voice or anything remotely educational or useful. It's just a vandalism!

Apparently we are in a dark dork age where all the people want to message and shove in our faces that women are the best ever and that men are lesser beneath them. The Barbie movie is no exception, but it goes so hard on these feminist values that it kinda circles back to unintentional satire exposing these problems, at least according to another KZbinr I’ve watched. Glad there is still someone rational in this age of mediocrity though, as your video here was well made.

It's really presents a series of bad toxic lessons for young kids. It's irresponsible. What's worse is there is no real creativity. It's about shouting angry before the film is released then shouting angry that the audience doesn't get it or stating it's beyond them. Whoever hired these writer/directors didn't realize that passionate filmmakers make the best films whereas these people make the worst films. It will drive away the film audience until they are fired. As much as I don't like James Cameron, nor Titanic, he needs to make another Titanic like movie romance to break this cycle of toxic filmmakers. We are in the era of films to be forgotten, and purged from our memory as the self indulgent crap that they were, that represent nobody except for some angry and toxic twitter users who got hired to make films and tv. Nobody will talk about this era in fondness. It'll be the creative bankruptcy that happened where all we got was junk and maybe one rare gem among thousands of films. Disney has forgotten how to make a good film. All they push out is garbage propaganda. Like a vampire leech, they suck the joy out of any of their early works and trash them so nobody wants to see the remakes. It doesn't help that all the characters are narcissists, only in love with themselves.

Seriously, I don't mind some movies without romance. That's not something I want in every single movies. For example, romance gives super-heroes a degree of humanity that lets us connect with them. But it is not absolutely necessary in a movie that is a tightly-timed race for a McGuffin that will destroy the world. However, the recent trend is an outright display of disdain for romance. And that is disturbing. No need for feelings or humanity. Just raw power, cold leadership and ruthlessness. All the traits that have built up decades of toxic masculinity are now the hallmarks of Hollywood "femininity". (But "it's ok when women do it", or something.) Moreover, we are forbidden from criticizing it because "sexism". We can't call out the new brand of "toxic femininity", or simply unrelatable characters, because these are our new female models, and we're supposed to like them. Somehow. And dissenting voices are just angry men who want their male super-hero dominance. When you can't justify your actions and are unwilling to correct them, insult your audience. Great strategy.

I remember going to this convention (pre-covid) and sitting down to hear a panel about 'steampunk literature'. Rather than steampunk, the people there (all women) only talked about how they want more stories with no romance or "how the girl doesn't need to get the boy in the end". That was the last time I bothered to go to this convention as all the panels had become utter garbage at this point anyway and this sitting listening about "Romance bad" when I wanted to learn about "Steampunk" in literature was the straw that broke the camel's back. Also, I love a bit of romance in stories.

As a woman, I've always preferred the romance in sci-fi or war movies or time travel or such. In order to make a story interesting, one must have conflict. If it a modern story, they too often make the conflict a toxic relationship that somehow works out. But, if it's in a grander complex story, the conflict is already there...Then they add a bit of beauty in a terrible situation.

I wonder if this recent change in Hollywood story writing has something to do in part with the youth who now get scriptwriting and storytelling jobs in Hollywood. Something like only 25% of children are now in homes with a married mother and father. Additionally, 75% of blacks, 50% of Latinos, and 25% of whites have no father at home. Throw in schools trying to teach critical race theory under the guise of "ethnic studies", and wallah...a bunch of young writers who have no real understanding of romance and love. 😢

To make a good Hollywood romance story work, it has to be relatable from both the male and female’s perspective. More importantly, both sides have to be flawed. Or in the case to just have the romance story be light-hearted in a comedy, it is played completely straight and sincere. Pixar’s Elemental is a brilliant character study how opposites can form a believable mutual attraction by overcoming their differences throughout the movie. Ember is short tempered and uncertain of what she wants when it comes to living under her immigrant parents’ roof all her life. Wade is more relaxed and relatable, but he is quite emotional about many things. You have plenty of time to develop their relationships as well as with their families. I wouldn’t say much but their relationship was very positive and it should make a good impression. The fad of strong, independent females (as well as toxic relationships) and rejecting men to just pawns feels like it is a Cold War (even genuine comedy is on thin ice because of stuff like MeToo and everything else people consider problematic).

I definitely feel similarly in the way that in todays pop culture climate it just isn’t popular to be vulnerable, show the intimacy between lovers (or even friends/family) - there’s a kind of pathology behind how people value stoicism over the full feeling of human emotion.

Now I've never been a fan of romance, and I haven't seen pretty much any of the recent films or shows mentioned here, but I believe you and the other commenters here about what state they're in and it just disappoints me to no end. Putting down men doesn't empower anyone, if anything it just furthers the message that women are not strong enough on their own which is complete bs. Making women act just like stereotypical male characters just reinforces that femininity, emotional intelligence, compassion, connection, and kindness are weaknesses, which is also bs. And even if I personally am adverse to romance I can still acknowledge that it's just as important as any other kind of relationship, including a romantic aspect to your story isn't a flaw (so long as it's written well). If anything showing your characters, especially heroes or good guys, that they are able to be in a stable and healthy relationship will just add more to their character as someone with a good heart that we should cheer for. Stop making your heroes into villains and vice versa.

I've seen two relatively recent romance films that were decent, enough. "All the Boys I've Loved Before" (2018). It's a teen rom-com developed for Netflix, from a book. The main character is a teen--16? 17? maybe. She's feminine. she's an introvert. She has a strong family. She's incredibly romantic. She started writing love letters to her crushes back when she was 11 or 12, and keeps them. After an argument, her younger sister mails the letters. Great awkwardness abounds. She's not an introvert who suddenly knows how to act around boys. She is awkward. And she stress-bakes. "Crazy Rich Asians" (2018) -- The movie developed this similar to a classic fairytale. It's more about the relationship between fair, young maiden & the evil queen (boyfriends' mom). The boyfriend is just a writing tool to get the drama started. He doesn't really get a personality. Anything else remotely romantic in the last 10 years?

in the ending of the notebook it clearly shows the realistic side of relationships about commitment which this generation has lost that sense since it's all about "what makes me happy all day or what I want or I can do what I want"
@justacat869
@justacat869 Жыл бұрын
The ending is fine, but the Notebook is one of the worst romance films I've ever seen because it romanticises toxic relationships and tells people that: - if you want to ask a girl out and she refuses, just threaten to kill yourself - arguing all the time means that the relationship is passionate - it's okay to cheat on your partner if it's with the one you love - sending letters every day even when she doesn't answer you is very romantic and totally not weird and obsessive Good idea, bad example. And Lon deserved better. He was a true gentleman.
@Femmeaesthetic
@Femmeaesthetic Жыл бұрын
@@justacat869 i loved the film however I agree with some of the flaws specially when he meets the girl and Allie cheats on lon, I don't think this movie tried to make it passionate when they were arguing, I think it showed that relationships are not always perfect. I think this movie was meant to be imperfect by intention. one thing you missed out about this film is Allie didn't know that Noah was sending her letters since her mother was hiding it from her.
@justacat869
@justacat869 Жыл бұрын
I get that her mother hid the letters, but he didn't know that and insisted on sending them because his idea was that even when she said "no", he could turn that "no" into "yes" if he insisted long enough. The Ferris wheel scene is just manipulative and awful. I don't think any woman in real life would be okay with a guy threatening to throw himself off a building if she didn't go out with him. That would be harassment in real life, and people only accept it because the leads are both good-looking. And yes, I'm not saying every relationship should be perfect, but they never solved their conflicts in a healthy, mature manner. Not to mention that she hit him and slapped him and I don't understand that it's okay for women to hit men but when men hit women it's not. If a woman hits a man in real life, then she should be prepared that the man could hit her back. Violence is not okay, regardless of gender. I'm not against flawed relationships, but having grown up in a dysfunctional family myself, it baffles me how their behaviour is seen as romantic. I don't see how my father yelling or throwing stuff at my mother is a sign that he loves her. This movie tells impressionable young women that this behaviour is acceptable and they may end up in abusive relationships themselves because they think this is normal and a sign of a passionate relationship.

most of the things what you've been saying are the same what I've been thinking for few years, as a romance genre fan myself it's disappointing and unexpected how romance now days has gotten so bad either with "s3x addition" or messy plot wholes. There have been a lot of sh*tty chemistry romance between two character in movies like, 365 days 🤮(at least fifty shades wasn't worse than this), after, kissing booth, all the boys I loved before sequel, euphoria, the idol etc etc I could go on. It's sad how romance has lost it's charm and sensual chemistry between two characters.

I'm not going to say if it's one of the most intended reasons, but one theory I do have is regarding the #metoo movement. I know it's been confirmed to be the reason behind downplaying the romances in The Little Mermaid and Snow White because the writers were afraid those relationships supposedly supported kissing without consent even though it's not true. It's also a possibility that having more recent heroines use casual sex as a source of empowerment is meant to be a vehicle for revenge fantasy against men who do the very same thing and feel attraction in general.

When you wanna write romance in a story you create this dynamic in between the two characters in order to lead them into a relationship without losing logic and you can keep adding emotions during these time in order for a better pay off but modern Hollywood doesn’t like dynamics nor having a character need another soul or just any needs at all so it just won’t work man it requires story telling but Hollywood won’t bother and we know it. P.s. plus most modern writers have never had a successful relationship or so it seems cause writing a love letter is easier than a script but they always miss it man they always do😂 and yeah I’m sure “female friendship” has never been toxic am I right girls?😂 god this disaster is hilarious
