You see it quite a lot in modern media with everything it talks like on "The Lion King" remake, the scene were Simba rescued Nala was removed & there was a scene added with all the Lioness. In Many games female character are bossy, bitchy & in a good chunk drawn more androgynous or masculine looking. It's sad because the actress they are based on are pretty, but a director from a game said that the actress looks too weak so the characters in game are made more masculine. They indirectly said that feminity is weakness. I literally saw many elegant or pretty female playable characters in Asian games. Many Western games are focused on an agenda to school players instead of making entertainment.

Ellen Ripley in Alien and Aliens is really the gold standard (along with Sarah Connor of Terminator and T2) of strong, commanding female characters. Neither wants to do a job that’s so risky, but when they must they must. I think any person can connect with that premise. Neither of them are complete super soldiers, they feel pain, get hurt, feel fear, but ultimately their will to go on, to push forward, to survive makes them incredibly powerful. Yeah in the case of ripley. Let's be real if dallas had been the one to survive and not her. He'd have Reacted in the same manner as she would especially at the prospect of Being asked to jump right back into the fray even as an adviser! Characters like her We're good because they acted like you know real people. It's like the writers were so used to tropes That they forgot how to make people. And that's why these characters don't come out so well. Because they have no character. They become the real life example Of that scene From that movie jack nicholson was from. Forgot the name that at the moment. But basically he was approached by a fan he's a writer in that movie Who asked him how did he make his female character so good. And he was being snarky but he told her that he wrote them by just imagining a man but without any of the responsibility. I know he was just being a bitter asshole. But it does give you a look into the mind of writers when they're writing their character That sometimes they will add attributes that may or may not connect with them Or make a lot of sense. But they do despite what he said have to have character That you could latch on to otherwise they're boring . And hilarious thing is you actually have stories about mary sues Like one punch man But what makes them good Is that the writer is skilled enough to write stories around the main character's Gary stu-ness Such as it frustrates Him because he has no real challenge. The despair he falls right back into, When he does finally find an enemy that he doesn't instantly get rid of And he vanquishes that enemy at last. Only to realize now he doesn't have a challenge any more. And one of the best arc of that story where the writer REVERSES the "underdog growing" By instead We're in as usual, it's the villain that beats the hero and the hero has to start rising and growing to be able to challenge them in the rematch. In this one's case, it's a minor villain who gets easily defeated by the Hero but not killed. So the arc focuses On that villain pretty much training and increasing his power. Rising up as he defeats stronger heroes at the stronger heroes. Just to get strong enough to rematch the main Protagonist. And when that fight that was being heavily foreshadowed finally happens. He didn't disappoint. It's a far cry from when the hero basically just knocked him out in one punch. Where now he's fighting a worthy opponent who actually forces Him to actually put effort into beating him. Basically you can compare it to the first rocky movie Where rocky was almost beating Apollo But that's because being The american champ He was greatly undestimating rocky. But it is shown without the training he went through Apollo even holding back with it beaten him Immediately. Because it also shows after a few rounds why he's the champ When you start taking rocky seriously. The point wasn't about rocky winning. It was about him proving A point to be taken seriously Which earned apollo's respect. It's something you've normally don't see much of from antagonists anymore. I think the last one I can think of would be Thanos And how he did show proper respect to the heroes who were able to challenge him even if they We're not able to beat him. In real life If your enemy doesn't respect you You have a decent shot of beating them And catching them off guard. If they do respect you. Congratulations you going to have a hard time now Because they're not going to underestimate you! Taking you so seriously You'll have to look out for any contingencies they might have put in place As much as you put down contingencies against them. But they wouldn't know how the rights the stuff like that😂

I have a ton of gay friends who have been in the same relationship for years or even decades and are very committed and faithful. I don't know how to say this ..I'll just give a few hints. When people are REALLY married for a very long time, their skills, knowledge and understanding, wisdom all blends together to an amazing degree. It is a stronger bond than a 'team' ... it is the unity of two. Galadriel and Celeborn might be an example. Aragorn and Arwen. When one of them dies, the one left behind is lessened, perhaps, forever.. they can't get back the half of themselves that walked through the door that swings only one way. They have to work very hard to find anything like happiness and fulfillment, they lost their other self. They may actually die of grief. Men do not weaken women, together we are stronger than either of us were, apart. Modern Women in movies are NOT strong, they are just trying to be men and women, usually at the same time and they are forever weakened by trying to do both, at once. They aren't sexy and they aren't independent. (which is why I think the She hulk Character was both so promiscuous and extremely miserable.)

PS. What I don't understand about the Morfydd Clark version of Galadriel is what is one of the most noble and highest born elves still in Middle Earth is doing running around in Battle armor? That is why I won't ever watch that show. 1. She is magically powerful even before she received Nenya. 2, she can command strong Elven soldiers to do her bidding. Her Father was Finarfin. Her grandfather is King Finwe. Her Brother's grandson is high King Gil-galad. (so she is his aunt!) Why would such a highly born lady have to draw a sword, EVER? It would like seeing Queen Elizabeth I marching into battle. That is what her generals are for.

I imagine that Hollywood probably views traditional femininity as something that was forced on women whether they want it or not. Like, in old Hollywood movies, women were delicate, demure, empathic, and caring. That certainly makes for a female character to find likeable, like how strength and stoicism and fortitude are seen as likeable traits for male characters. The problem modern Hollywood has with these, however, is that they don't see these as likeable character traits. Rather, they see them as paint-by-numbers templates that give people some pre-conceived notion about the kind of people they SHOULD try to fit/find appealing in others without taking into consideration that not everyone can fit them. Like, where we see all the positive traits that we feel stand the test of time, they see unfortunate implications that we probably never consider, let alone see. Male Traits to the woke Stoicism: A man must never allow themself to express any emotions whatsoever. Even if it leads to them burying their unwanted feelings when expressing them openly would be better for their mental health. Strength: A man must always have big bulging muscles, even whether or not their natural body makeup would make that possible. Female Traits to the woke Beauty: A woman must fit society's artificially-imposed cookie cutter standard of beauty, and the majority of their thoughts should be focused on being beautiful. No flaws are allowed, whatsoever, even things the woman wouldn't logically have control over (shortness, cleft lip, webbed finger(s)/toe(s), etc). If they have these flaws, they should get plastic surgery right away to get rid of them rather than accept them as a part of themselves. Romance: The ONLY thing a woman should strive towards is being in a romantic relationship with a man and becoming a housewife. A woman should have no other life goals AT ALL. I imagine that's why so many female characters are written as they are. Hollywood wants to give girls role models who openly reject traditional feminism. They want young girls to have more options for life goals than "look pretty and get married and spend your life as a housewife". They write these characters as sexless so that the audience doesn't see them as sex objects, but as people. Sadly, they seem to have swapped out one paint-by-numbers template for another. Where once we had beautiful kind-hearted women, we now have muscly angry women.

it's weird. There's this premise that men were super empowered. Ok. Did empowerment mean eschewing intimacy or vulnerability? I don't think so. Being a dude I have a soft spot for the films, Die Hard and Die Hard 2. John McLane was a tough character. Seemed to love his wife. I'm sure there are bunches of Clint Eastwood films in which he shows human affection. There would be any number of classic films or tv shows in which rugged masculinity was accompanied by being vulnerable with a wife or trying to be a loving father. If it's not a problem for a dude to be human, it seems weird for it to be a problem for women.

It goes even farther than that. Your point is completely valid, but there's even more stupidity that you haven't gotten to. Most Hollywood films portray two kinds of protagonists: geeks and big dumb brutes. The big dumb brutes are almost always the heroes, and the geeks are the ones that enable them to win, but are ridiculed pretty flagrantly. Since the big dumb brute hero has only one way to solve problems, (Brute Smash!) their solution is to bash things. The basher who can take more hits and keep ticking wins. They're no skill, no brains, nothing... just who the screenwriter decides will win. Being both an intellectual and quite physical, since I have a hard sciences degree and worked as a software engineer and cinematographer for a long time, but also I hike, climb mountains, bike, and train (and teach) traditional martial arts, I've always detested the ridiculousness of Hollywood's bogus combat. No traditional martial art, even (and especially) the arts that were based on training specifically for the battlefield, rely on strength. It can't. You can't rely on strength in a pitched battle, it's both useless and exhausting. You wouldn't last, plus you will sooner or later run into someone stronger than you. And there's a little known fact that the basis of the most popular martial arts, including Wing-Chun and Okinawan Karate (before the Japanese acquired it under duress from the Okinawans), are based on a feminine art.

This an issue that affects so much modern media. It seems like we've collectively decided that gender is or should be incidental. However, this is all manufactured. We are unusually developed primates. If you look at groups of primates in the wild, males and females have different objectives and priorities. They achieve their goals by different means. This used to be the case in film and television fiction. Now many female characters could be re-cast as male and their behaviour wouldn't necessarily look off. Interestingly the same isn't true the opposite way, as it's become socially acceptable for females to dress in overtly male attire - jeans and T-shirt and Doc Marten boots for example, it's still seen as fringe for a male to go around in high-heels, a dress and make-up. Likewise we're not seeing men in film and television acting in a feminine way so much. It's almost like there's an agenda for females to hijack masculinity, while quietly acknowledging that the differences between males and females does exist, but that we don't like it and we want to change it.

It was never collectively decided, neither was the average person given a choice in the matter. This was forced on to society, like so much of what we see today. It started slowly by introducing the old stoic female characters from previous decades of media (film/tv/games) then slowly devolved to its logical conclusion of just outright attacking femininity. The traditional feminine character is mocked, and yet we all know that these female characters pretending or trying to be men, just cannot fulfill that role, we all instinctually know it's farfetched to see a woman try so hard to act as a man, yet all she ends up doing is looking like a child acting out a ridiculous caricature of masculinity. When guy's/men think of masculinity, we often see the warrior who keeps his emotions under control, out of a sense of duty for kin and country, not for fame or glory, because we naturally have the instinct to be the ones who'll give up our lives to protect who and what matters to us. Women have a hard time grasping exactly how that looks like to a man, how legitimate masculinity is seen by men and is enacted by men. Something that they simply end up looking ridiculous by trying to fill a role they were never meant to be in. No one wants to see these cartoonish caricatures of women and masculinity, which the latter today is represented by guys who are very emotional, simply cannot stop talking, or are almost useless to the point of having self deprecation. (seriously, take your pick of any movie or show from the past 3-7, and further years, and notice how there are more scenes with almost non-stop dialogue amongst the male characters)

I've noticed a growing passion among women for vintage dresses, and the retro look starts in the 50s and goes back. This was when one category of women's outfits dominated: feminine. Feminine is not strongly sexy, nor is it business, and it is casual enough to be comfortable, but still feminine. Being (growing up) a liberal young man who wanted greater social justice but also preservation of and respect for traditional social roles, I was disgusted by the overblown "girl power" craze of the 1990s and later in popular culture. I didn't think the trend was good for society, because it only succeeded in causing "strong" women to be resented and even hated both by men and by "weak" women who were made to feel socially and morally inferior by comparison. Oddly enough, though, to the extent that I tolerated feminist heroes, I actually preferred it when they were tomboys rather than classically feminine. In my view, these heroines were the "good" ones because they recognized that men were the only "true" physical heroes and needed to be closely emulated by women who wanted to try to co-opt their niche. The "girly-girl" feminists, on the other hand, really ticked me off, and to some extent still do, because they came across as arrogant, supremacist showoffs: "We're better at being men than you AND better at being women than you." Since those days, I've become even more tolerant and developed a "live-and-let-live" attitude. So now my outlook is pretty much "Oh, hell, do whatever you want."

Thing is, no one is legitimately appealed to that. That had to be forced on to society to accept women in masculine roles. 50 years ago, pretty much every person you'd come across would have laughed at the notion of trying to portray a woman as masculine. Especially/Specifically because it's not natural to women. Hell go outside of the west and you'll find that most non-western countries and their people's see it as ridiculous to try and force female characters to essentially act like men. In the west we've had "equality" beaten so much down our throats that it's gone so far as to deny the realities of there being differences between men and women which goes beyond simple physical strength, but also mentality. Even when I was a child I thought it was ridiculous whenever a show would push out these tomboy female characters. Pretty much the only reason this exists is that people were forced to accept this facade of women trying to be men, solely on the basis of "equality", reality be damned if women in real life just never show any signs of even being capable of harboring such characteristics.

Also, throughout history there have been women who had to take on what we would consider "masculine" roles for the sake of their families. Totally agree, I thought it was just me that felt it was off to say that. I was almost agreeing with her until she only described female characters being that. She also completely lost me when she talked about making a character aroace is a writing flaw. Being aroace myself, I feel that romance shouldn't get in the way of a plot that doesn't need it. That in itself is a writing flaw, especially when it's only used when they can't think of good character development.

We don't ask for Ellen Ripley to be made overly feminine and graceful, nobody was complaining about her being a badass. The question is: Why did Hollywood feel the need to make the likes of Galadriel LOOSE their femininity? Why does every "powerful" female character have to loose their femininity? Why can't the badasses and the graceful feminine characters share the spotlight?
