30:20 The bit of the saga rules you're grasping for is that if a saga-typed permanent has lore counters equal to or greater than the number of chapter abilities then it's owner sacrifices it as a state based action (unless it has a chapter ability on the stack, because sagas just *have* to be awkward). So losing all abilities (but therefore not the type) deals with them, removing counters doesn't. Hat tip for the Serge W ;)

I just double-checked the rules on casting spells that are face down in exile, since Foretell cards can obviously be cast while face down in exile. Rule 406.3a is the relevant paragraph here: "A card exiled face down has no characteristics, but the spell or ability that exiled it may allow it to be played from exile." Since The Creation of Avacyn doesn't have an allowance to cast the exiled card and Misthollow Griffin has no characteristics (and hence doesn't have the ability 'You may cast Misthollow Griffin from exile'), there is no way to cast the Misthollow Griffin until the second chapter turns it face up.

If your opponent plays a Chthonian Nightmare remember that you can respond to its ETB trigger to gain energy and destroy the Nightmare with an instant speed disenchant. It’s a pocket condition that does not exist for Recurring Nightmare and is a key way to interact.

They can still spend energy to activate the ability if they have some before it resolves, so this trick only sometimes works, but it's an important trick to have for sure.

On mutated cultist, it doesn't fully reset urza's saga. Once the first two chapters have resolved it'll still have "{T}: Add {C}" and the karn-struct ability even if all the counters are removed. So you could use Mutated Cultist to get more Karnstructs. Fun fact.

The creation of avacyn seems like the perfect commander card. Cool, very flavorful card that’s very memorable, that falls apart to serious interaction or pressure. I think it’s going to be very well loved in many peoples commander decks, and completely absent in 1v1 competitive formats.

Alright, consider this. Turn one, you play a fetch land, crack it go get a swamp, thoughtseize your opponent, making them discard brainstorm. You then play a black lotus, crack it and play Barrowgoyf. You now have a 4/5 deathtouch lifelink that mills you and draws you cards. But it doesn't matter because your opponent top decked fatal push. Edit: Also, on the note of Chthonian nightmare; Minister of Inquiries, I feel like that's the right balance between spicy and actually good to pair with it. And of course, anytime there's energy involved, there's always the ever reliable Whirler Virtuoso.

one of the downsides of chthonian nightmare i havent really seen many people bring up is that its a lot more vulnerable than recurring nightmare. because it has that ETB effect, it gives your opponent an opportunity to respond... still a pretty cracked card, and i love it.

ngl I actually really like the red flare in any aggro red I swing with 3 guys, drop my opponent to 6, Bolt sac a guy to Flare alternatively M1 I cast a haste creature, combat drop them to 8, Fireblast + Flare or lets say they have blockers, monke wasn't getting through anyway, cash it in to double up your removal and keep the beatdown train rolling

I'm surprised there was no mention of Quest for the Necropolis. 1 Black for an enchantment with Landfall: put a counter on this, and 5B, sac this: reanimate ANY creature at sorcery speed, this costs 1 less for each counter on it. It requires some set up to be good value, but is so low commitment to put out there, and has a top end of being able to reanimate anything for 1 black mana. Throw in fetch lands and it's not even difficult to reach that top end relatively fast, too.

I think wheeler is right that hexmage and mutated cultist both go into all the decks that want either. When comparing the cards, though, I think an additional point worth considering is that cultist remains on the board after performing its effect while hexmage is sacrificed. That, combined with the added mana effect, makes mutated cultist a very attractive card in the killing a planeswalker scenario because it gets so much additional value. The feeling of casting this to take the loyalty counters off a minsc and boo, cast something big with the extra mana, and then block and kill the boo token is going to be unmatched.

On the flip side, hexmage saccing itself in Black means it’s probably easier to do it repeatedly if you want to, while recasting the cultist is likely more difficult.

54:00 There are a decent bit of them you can use for the infinite you can do on turn 3 and it’s a bit pip heavy but you’ve got a lot of blood artists, some of which are zombies Cartel Aristocrat, Wayward Servant, Plague Belcher, Corpse Knight, Bastion of Remembrance, and Diregraf Captain to name a few. If you don’t have a confirmed kill with it, you can use Diregraf Collosus to make a 2/2 whenever you cast a zombie so you can get 7-8 bodies if you really want Zombies eating good tonight

As we get these more powerful sets, I'd be really curious to hear if and how your deckbuilding philosophy has been adapting. Do new cards like these change the way you think about what you put in your deck? Canlander has always been a powerful format, but it feels very different compared to a few years ago, and I wonder if you'd want to speak to that.

That’s not how Read Ahead works. It wouldn’t work because you’d also skip Chapter 1 which is needed to tutor in the first place.

I guess the mechanically, having read ahead doesn't work, but my idea was to just skip chapter 2. If you can get chapter 1, then get to chapter 3, then this thing would be broken. Proliferate does it, I think. But it would only be a good play if the cost is cheap enough for whatever it is you fetched for.

@@TheFluke32 That would work, only caveat is that you wouldn't be able to put the card, if it's a creature, into play. The second chapter needs to resolve first in order to reveal the card as a creature for the third chapter to make relevant.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the Amped raptor, It just says you can cast the card for energy, not until end of turn, so if like say in a Gruul deck if you played this on turn 2 and hit a four drop, Magical Christmas land play a voltaic brawler on turn 3 and use that energy to throw down that 4 drop?

I actually pulled a Necrodominance in a draft, and put it in my deck. The only time I played it, it basically lost me the game. I had some lifegain in the deck, but couldn't find it. And, only gaining the draw on your end step is a huge thing.

I play necropotence since I'm on the tinker plan and it can be used in place of top with bolas' citadel. However, my deck is terrible. Wheeler is right, necropotence has no place in highlander, and necrodominance is situationally worse. Learn from my decade of pain and play better cards for the format. You guys missed the crap out of Sawhorn Nemesis, from the Goyf EDH deck. 2/4 for 3R that doubles all damage to your opponent. Notice the card says "Whenever a source deals damage" not "whenever a source you control deal damage" which means that if you have this out, OPs ancient tomb hits them for 4, or their mana crypt hits them for 6. its a big enough butt to dodge most removal, and swings as a 4/4. Card is bonkers good.

Christmas land scenario for The Creation of Avacyn: Play it, tutor your (high MV) card, then donate the saga. Opponent then turns up the exiled card and eats the life loss, but at the end you still get your card, unless it's a creature and your opponent wants it. (Probably more a commander thing, where you can tutor for Phage this way to dome an opponent for 7 and they will not put it onto the battlefield, unless they don't want to be in that game anymore.) [edit] If you tutored it, is your opponent allowed to look at the face-down exiled card while they control the donated saga?

Unless a card says you can look at a face-down exiled card, you can't - technically, nobody can ever look at a card exiled with The Creation of Avacyn until Chapter II. A helpful thing to remember is that in magic you don't have two exile zones like you do two graveyards and libraries - exile is a common zone, so cards there aren't linked to a player the same way (aside from, of course, still having an owner). The donate line is pretty neat!

Crabomination is an interesting Reanimation target, may not be worth it but free spells are quite good Refurbished Familiar busted in Pauper, maybe Aristoscraps wants a 1 mana 2/1 flyer that discards or draws Glimpse the Impossible is a draw 3 on your storm turn or a way to store some mana Sawthorn Nemesis is like easier to cast Torbran that doubles instead of adding 2

Question about Ral: Can you win the coin flip, choose to exile him, and then cast another spell before he re-enters the battlefield, or is there no time in between those two things? It's niche, but it could be a way to still guarantee he transforms, and give him an extra counter when enters. If it works obviously.
