Modern House Part 16- Finish upper floor walls, set roof beams and roof joists

Busy episode, went as far with the wall framing as I could until the roof beams, go up and that then allows me to finish my way back down.  Managed to get almost all the roof joists cut and placed as well.  it’s about 1300 ft.² (120 m² ) up there but it sure felt like it went quick since it was all on somewhat normal framing terms without the steel involved at that level. Although I’m a couple weeks ahead of it in real time, I’m still looking back on this week as one of my favorites for the job.

The part where you timed the nail gun to the music put a huge smile on my face. It was clever. Loved it. Probably took a bit of time to edit it. Also, bet the guy who delivered the lumber rarely has someone using a crane to unload the truck, lol.

Lol, I missed the opportunity to film unloading that driver a few episodes ago when he showed up with a pallet of hangers and it took him a little bit to piece together that I was operating the crane as well:-)

It will be fine, it's dried in now and fans are going and the weather is cleaning up. Its just the way it is here and it's dealt with accordingly. Also, doug fir framing lumber is quality stuff and all the sheet goods are from within 300 miles or so and made from fir as well, not pine.

Pretty cool editing around the rhythm in this one... meanwhile I'm thinking that your feet are going to be soaking wet by the end of ... middle of... each day. There has got to be a plan to deal with the water, I'm guessing... but in the meantime I feel for you because that has to get old pretty quickly. I'm still amazed at the way you work so that working pretty much alone, you can get an enormous amount of work done. Thanks for sharing this project with us.

Oh yeah, That is just the base layer of the roof to seal the place dry. The roof slopes with tapered polyiso foam under hardboard under a TPO roof to drains. I had cut the roofer a scupper hole where there was already built up material so it's holding a little water until it stops raining long enough to cut a new one in. My feet stay 100% dry in the Xtratuf rubber boots. They are as comfy as slippers:-)

I really enjoy watching this project come along. I am sure you have been asked this question many times before and I think I know the answer, but, why do you work alone instead of having a crew or at least one other guy helping you?

Glad you found the channel, I work alone because I like the simplicity and the quiet. I have equipment and a system that keeps me from needing help to stay productive. I do team up on projects with some pals from time to time who all operate more or less like I do but as two man teams. I think a lot of people look upon some of the tasks that I perform as menial and that it would be more 'efficient' to have a less experienced person do them but the truth is that I don't mind doing them and I can do them on somewhat of an autopilot that allows me to think about some other part of the job or scheduling or what material I need to order next. It's all good, I keep a good pace and everyone is happy with it. Thanks for staying with the build:-)

In my country Greece with this consumption of wood you can build three houses. Here cement and cement blocks are so cheap, as are bricks Also roof tiles made of clay Bunderschoen, Roman style, or Byzantium style. There is no need for wood because it has no lifespan, it rots quickly, it creaks a lot because it dries out over time, you think ghosts are walking around in the house Have you tried to make a cost inquiry, how much does one or the other cost? Then there are also the light cement bolcks, they are glued with glue for tiles, you build a frame and fill it all around with blocks. In two days you are finished, if you want you can see a video on You tube [Ytong] But I don't want to bother you, you're a good technician

Is there a process to dry out the framing after it's been dried in? Also, any reason Zip or Huber type sheathing aren't used here?

There absolutely is a processs and fans are already going. for the first step. I personally have not used Zip sheeting nor have I seen it widely used around here and I feel like this might be one of those areas it does not suit. thanks for watching.

One would almost think you were working in England for all the wet weather you're getting. Have you had a full day yet that it hasn't rained? I don't know how you can work in those conditions! And that one roof doesn't drain very well. (not your fault)

The worst of the rain is behind us but that was a few days of pretty heavy stuff in between some really nice spells. All the roofs got dried in without taking on water first. That roof will drain fine when it's done as it will be sloped with foam. I'll cut another scupper in it when it its dry and we can patch back the membrane. I was waiting for the scaffolding to go up before I did that.

Guessing way more. I'll look at the count on the boxes I use and do a rough total at some point just for fun. I know I drilled over 2000 small holes alone just to screw the wood to the steel..... which in retrospect equates to around 150 vertical feet of holes thru steel :-)

That is difficult to fathom. Just on one hanger I think I counted at least 40 fastener holes. The fasteners make up more mass than some of the hangers they go into it seems!

What are those beams made of ? It looks like compressed wood chips. I know nothing about carpentry/wood work

There is three main types of engineered wood on this build. The lighter ones in this episode are LSL or laminated strand lumber made from wide, thin and fairly short chips. The darker ones are PSL or parallel strand lumber and made from much longer, thicker and heavier strands. The PSL is far and away the strongest available but I've never seen one taller than 18" so bigger jobs with longer spans you will typically see Glulams or steel beams. The beauty behind this stuff is you can get it in really long lengths. The two longer ones here are 38' and 36'. Makes it really easy to put together. Oh, quick comparison for you. There's one other type and it's called LVL or laminated veneer lumber, it looks like plywood but all the veneers are going the same direction. A single 1-3/4" thick LVL is as strong as 3 layers of equal height 2x fir material. So three layers equaling 5-1/2+/- would be equal to 9 2x's and in comparing that to PSl it's not even a close race with PSL outstripping the lvl by quite a bit.
