Fabulous 10 year old Bourbon - such good, intense flavour that doesn't lose flavour as the cocktail dilutes, if it is being sipped slowly and that is so important! Great bartender, lots of knowlededge. I love "it's very spirit dependent!!!" It is so true! Great bitters - love orange and Angostura! 2 beautiful ounces of Bourbon is fabulous and so delicious! I love this cocktail!! :-) Yes, stir! No shaking or anything else - just stir - right on!!!

Curious if using a dash of liquid smoke would suffice instead of having to smoke wood chips. Making a smoky version of this cocktail in an apartment could set off some alarms if not careful. With liquid smoke, I may be able to bypass the actual smoke. Thoughts?
@TheEthanolReview4 жыл бұрын
Not sure about liquid smoke, that's some intense stuff. This particular method is very minimal for actual smoke created. If you were to use a smoking gun like a lot of bars do, thatd probably set off an alarm

@@drb808 thanks for the feedback glad you enjoyed it. a good brandied cherry plays delicious compliment to bourbon forward cocktails. absolutely not necessary though. for example, Death & Co's house old fashioned uses lemon and orange rind, without cherry. that being said, my current favorite cherry to use as garnish are called Griotte. if you type "amifruit cherries" into amazon you can pick up a legit brand. ice cube mold brand is "chillz blox", just type that into amazon. i use those molds both at home and the bar. I’m going to suggest a couple of things to take your smoked old-fashioned to the next level: 1) Substitute two bar spoons of maple syrup for the simple syrup (thanks to the How to Drink channel for this idea) 2) Dip a wet bar spoon into turbinado sugar (although any will do), brûlée it with the torch and stir into the drink. It won’t fully dissolve but that’s okay. You still get the flavor of the burnt sugar in the same way the smoke permeates the ice, and you already have the torch so might as well use it to explore the wonderful world of caramel and burnt sugar flavors.
@TheEthanolReview4 жыл бұрын

I’ve heard the smoke does a great job of binding to ice. What are your thoughts on a smoke chamber with burning wood chips, where the smoke bathes the ‘mouth up’ glass and its contents (sugar/bitters/large ice cube), adding the bourbon/garnish at the last? Love the video and the wink for no reason. 😄
@TheEthanolReview3 жыл бұрын
Phil there are lots of different techniques that will garner more/less smoke character. Depends on what you're going for really, I personally base it on the concept i'm trying to achieve + consistency. for example we made this drink called Smoke & Agave where I wanted to really show off the oak chips i was toasting, so i lit a significant amount of chips and let it sit for quite a while covered on ice. that being said if i were to use a smoking gun on it there might have been some loss of agave representation from the tequila... shrug!
