Comparing my Yozan Jinashi 1.8 vs Jiari 1.8

Just as I thought, it is so hard to pick up all the subtle difference between the two shakuhachi over microphones and ones and zeros.... but there are places where you can really hear the difference. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

i can hear the tone difference quite well and this expose is answering precisely many questions i had over these differences. It would sure be interesting to see these differences in ''audio wave form pictures'' from both flutes. Great video,, i really loved it :)

I watched without looking at the screen and can hear an audible difference in both. I love them both - really appreciate the smoothness and supple sound of jinashi and the hollow brassy sound of jinari. I want to learn on both!

Great video. Nearly 20 years ago, I had the honor of playing a 'Perfect Ji-Nashi' flute blindfolded and was convinced it had ji-paste in it. This flute I speak of has fooled dozens of master players from Switzerland to the U.S and bares John Kaizan neptune's stamp. I don't know who currently has this flute but it is a legendary item and I estimate it is worth a disturbing amount of money.

Well done, hard to really tell the difference, one has to really listen over the computer speakers. Live I am sure it is easier. Still I can hear the change in tone from one to the other. I will listen again with headphones, that should really stand out then. I am in the process of getting a Jiari and it is taking me a lot of time get to use to the sound of a 2.5 jiari over a 2.5 Jinashi. I thought it was just the bore size or my playing but it is really a combo of that with the change Jiari from Jinashi.

Yes, it doesn't help when they have music playing in the background, it is so annoying to hard of hearing like me.

I am more and more convinced that jinashi is the way to go for Honkyoku (and Honkyoku style). There is a clarity in the highs and a texture that (what you may call colour) that the jiari doesn’t have. I think the bass/low end harmonics in the jiari make the sound bigger but not necessarily better for this kind of music. Also, when you are playing the jiari on Tsuki it somehow feels like you are more connected to the piece and I can hear those fading notes better, there is more subtlety going on to my ears.

Yeah Jinashi is really really nice for Honkyoku. I use the Jinashi almost always for honkyoku

Very interesting video. Is it possible to determine what type of 1.8 I have? Maker is Shinzan (Tozan-ryu) 1.8** purchased about 30yrs agos from my teacher Ronnie Seldin.

Jiari is the one that sounds a little like a saxophone and would be nice for jazz and the other sounds more plaintive.

Very very nice...jinashi best to my ears, only need a mike if playing with others. Having said that, the " mysterious " tones of the jinari are also nice! From a purist perspective, of course the jinashi is best.

Most smoked bamboo is cracked so it was bound before made.

nice comparison, and nice flutes, but jinashi for me is not a bamboo that has another bamboo added to it, is too artificial and for me is a no to my jinashi way. just for info how much is priced the jinashi from yozan?
