So many great local bands were shown on that channel like D.O.A., the Payolas, the Young Canadians, the Subhumans and others whose names I cant remember. This was before MTV or MuchMusic of course. Great restoration job on this video. It looks fantastic! Better than when I was just a kid sitting 2 feet from the TV eating a bowl of cereal watching it all those yrs ago :)

The story goes that the bass player did not realize what her punk assumed name referred to, so that when a CBC interviewer asked her who gave her the name Mary Jo Kopechne and she answered her swimming teacher, she did not intend it to get the gasp it produced. (to briefly explain, Miss Kopechne (the original, not her namesake) was the woman in Ted Kennedy's car when it went off the bridge in 1969 and she drowned)

It wasn't till Chuck Berry died yesterday and I saw his name all over the net with obituary press - that the name "Buck Cherry" came to mind. Belatedly, I realized John Armstrong's stage name "Buck Cherry" is a pun on Chuck Berry's name. Odd, I never caught it before, especially as I came up with on my own a similar type pun years ago re. comedian Lenny Bruce, i.e. "Benny Lruce"! Okay, so I'm slow sometimes. Btw, I notice this Modernette's song HAS a few Chuck-Berry-like licks in it.

It's one of those things that hits you years after the fact sometimes. I wouldn't have thought of it either, because you don't really associate the Modernettes with Berry. LIke I didn't realize for a couple of years after I watched it that the guys in Repo Man were all named for different beers...Bud, Oly, Miller, and Lite.
