I feel like the decline for Limited Too and Justice is related to the decline of preteen content in the 2010's. Mainly because kids want to grow more older these days so they would dress up someone like the Kardashian and IG models or influencers. We rarely get a popular marketed preteen idol similar to Jojo Siwa because of this. Thats why we majority see only things for babies, toddlers, and teens but no preteens.

I feel like preteen era ended in 2017-2020s. Jojo siwa era was still “in” 2014-2016. I don’t really think it’s the kardashians who changed the preteen era cause the show aired in 07 and preteen stuff started to decline around 2012-2016. It was moreso social media itself and how internet culture changed everything. IG, TikTok, etc

You're so right. There is an agenda to blur the line between childhood and adulthood and no one can tell me any different. Not only do young people watch more adult and hyper sexual content but it seems the "cynic ironic" stage you'd expect from a say seventeen year old starts younger and younger for some kids. Also in mainstream pop culture yes there has always been adult and sexual media but it's like there is an agenda to make mainstream culture as hyper sexualized as possible and they know that millions of young girls watch this stuff. It disgusts me so much...

Another 30 year old here too! 👋 It’s funny cause I was just commenting on how laughable the fashion was at that time, but a lot of it did make sense as it was a new millennium and fashion tried to get futuristic in it. The thing is, I think we were blessed at that time to be preteens, it was the perfect age to pull off those tacky outfits and we were youthful enough to not look silly like those in their 20’s did. I will say, I think what is missing is that fashion experiment of having different opinions of material besides just cotton. Think it might help if there were pops of different materials that wasn’t tacky but had a purpose to the design. Yet something easier for the materials to be washed too as that’s likely why some of those trends never staid lol 😆

I think early 2000s catalog shopping for preteens is an interesting conversation. Because it was also popular with Delia’s and the American Girl catalog. And now catalog shopping is replaced with internet shopping (which we still had then, but people had a lot more qualms about shopping for clothes online back then - even though shopping from a catalog isn’t really that much different 🤷🏻♀️). But I feel like those catalogs were really influential.
@anonymousonyx91682 жыл бұрын
They certainly were for me! I LOVED the American Girl doll catalogues. I used to read through the whole thing and look at the prices of what I wanted so I knew how much money I’d have to save for certain accessories. Also, before social media I’d read up on tween/teen celebrities in magazines. I grew up taping the posters I took out of Tiger Beat magazine onto my walls and taking those cheesy love quizzes with friends. Magazines and catalogues definitely had an influence on what I thought was trendy or cool at the time.

Wow. Talk about close to home! I definitely remember Limited Too from my childhood, and seeing how bright and fun the stores looked. Since I'm transgender, I didn't get to experience girlhood, so I looked at it from the sidelines and felt jealous at what the girls got to have. As a young adult, while still pre-transition albeit gender-questioning, I actually thought about applying to work at a Justice store (that was previously a Limited Too location). At least as an adult, I finally feel free to shop at whatever adult store I want to, regardless of gender. I'm pretty conservative fashion-wise, but some of that stems from the style of some of my favorite women's stores; think along the lines of WHBM or Ann Taylor here, with the former being my favorite (I've yet to purchase an Ann Taylor item, but their style resonates with me). The Limited (the adult women's store from which Limited Too originally spun off from) would have also been among one of these stores if it still existed. I'll note that these particular stores are often known for catering to career women, but I find a certain mix of androgyny and sophistication in professional women's clothing that matches well with my internal sense of gender identity. Not all the clothes in those stores are "boring" professional clothes though; WHBM has some pretty stylish stuff that can easily be worn casually.

I loved club Libby Lu days! I still have a backpack from there that says “At Club Libby Lu, girls rock,” but it looks dirty from makeup so I have to clean it. I used to have a Hannah Montana wig and mermaid brown curly hair extensions to add to your hair in an updo but I regrettably threw them away bc they were so tangly 😭. I miss that stuff, although I felt the wig didn’t suit me lolol I would’ve gladly never thrown those away if I could get those back but it’s ok.

I'm embarrassed to say how many times I would talk my mom into taking me there and buying so much clothing. I wore a faux fur-lined denim coat from there for years. I remember the catalogs and wanting to get all the furniture, and absolutely buying all the Lizzie McGuire stuff when it came out. LTD2 introduced me to Neopets. I definitely bought into the lifestyle they were selling me.

Who remembers the glittery pink gift cards??? My family didn’t have the money to shop at limited too , but I remember getting a gift card as a gift once or twice… even when I didn’t have money to buy anything, it didn’t ever stop me from going in the store and looking around. Just browsing was fun enough at the time, they had so much to look at! Those memories are so vivid, limited too clothes/accessories really did make a girl popular and feel fashionable lol. the early 2000s was an awesome time to be a kid/tween.

I’m 17 so had no idea what limited too was, but Justice was ssooooo prevalent in my life. It’s funny that compared to its parent company it was seen as cheaper, because I always thought justice was super boujee as a kid. I remember getting a justice gift card for Christmas and spending almost an hour deciding what variation of tie dye tank top to buy.

Limited Too was every tween girls favorite...unless you were a fat kid. I hit puberty at 10, and gained a lot of weight because of it. Suddenly, I couldn't dress like the other kids in my class, or wear things that felt youthful or cute. I was quickly turned away from Limited Too, and was really glad that Justice still had clothes I could wear. I noticed that Limited Too never did adapt that sizing either, another way they just didn't keep up with the fashion world.

Me too. I wore nothing but sweat pants for a while there. Too short for adult women's and too fat for tween styles

After watching this, I truly believe that Limited Too jump-started and encouraged my passion for fashion. I would sketch my own designs, and they were definitely based off of things found at Limited Too. I felt like they saw young girls as people who appreciated fashion and design, which is so empowering to a pre-teen figuring out who she is and what she likes.

I remember Justice was huge in my town. My best friend got so much stuff from there but she was an only child and I had 4 brothers. So my mom mostly took us to goodwill and would take me to Justice once a year as a treat. I miss my poncho though and kinda wish those would come back 🤣

I was a teen during the era of Clarissa Explains It All. Her outfits were so original, but nothing that I would wear myself. Limited Too was the first store I would run to after asking my parents for spending money. The outfits I got weren't outrageous, they didn't show a lot of skin, but I loved that the store was "for me." I also remember the Delia's catalogs and their stores as well. I never saw anything like bare midriffs or fishnets at Limited Too. It was just a place to get a cool outfit.

one of my favorite things i got from Limited Too was a diary that had a bunch of fill-in-the-blank questions. i got it in 2005 and the question "do you prefer email or snail mail?" in the book pretty much sums up that era for me.

This video was so interesting to me because as a tween just over 10 years ago I felt there was no store that catered to both my size and my tastes, and resorted to borrowing clothes from my mum that suited me. And now I think it's even worse. I work for a kids clothing store and our tween size range is only available online. I turn away tween customers daily and it makes me so sad because there's clearly a gap and it's such a hard age when it comes to shopping for oneself. But I think it's also hard for brands to toe the line between meeting the desires of tweens while not stepping into age-inappropriateness. This video made me extremely jealous of american tweens in the late 90s/early 2000s.
@sbclaridge2 жыл бұрын
You're definitely correct about "tween" fashion and why it doesn't really seem to be a thing today. I was definitely a tween in the early-2000s, I just wasn't a girl so I didn't get to get all the fun stuff. Needless to say, I was so jealous of the girls who got to shop at Limited Too! Even though I didn't get to experience it as a kid, I felt that same kind of rush the first time I got to try on and purchase women's clothing. This was in the mid-2010s, and Forever 21 and H&M were my go-to brands then. By the late-2010s, my fashion tastes quickly matured beyond these fast-fashion brands, and WHBM became my new go-to brand (and has remained such ever sense).

omg i absolutely loved these stores!!! everything was furry and sparkly!! I remember one Christmas in 2007, my rich paternal grandparents took me and my cousin so that they could buy me a present, and I found this giant, fluffy chair and a big purple sleeping bag with all the peace signs and hearts and smiley faces. it made me so happy but my cousin was mad because he wanted me to buy clothes and didn’t understand why I would want furniture. Growing up as a young girl in Y2K was really a experience.

i genuinely think if limited too re-rebranded as a teen/young adult store it would THRIVE in this y2k revival era. i know i would be there. also for them to consider plus sizes would set them so far apart from other brands trying to do this rn. i also really wish Libby Lu would make a come back :,(

@@cantsay2205 In a way it changed to how it used to be some generations ago. Up until shortly after WWII the concept of teens or tweens didn't really exist. There were special clothes for small children and everyone one else wore miniature versions of modest adult clothes. I have some old family pictures of someone's confirmation party and it's almost impossible to tell the adults from the teens (13-14).

Limited Too didn't happen a whole lot in my house, but I remember being a big fan of Justice when I was a kid. In a way, I do miss these kinds of stores. A few years back, I think right before the pandemic, I went to Justice with my aunt and my cousin (cousin being around 12 at the time), and it was wild. The nostalgia hit me instantly, and I almost bought a set of overalls that would've fit me. That being said, I feel like the death of these stores is definitely related to the death of the preteen market. When I stopped shopping at Justice, I was only like twelve. I remember feeling a little embarrassed to still be shopping at Justice or watching Disney Channel even though I was definitely still just a kid. I think I wanted to grow up too much, and it probably didn't help that I had three older sisters who were all in high school and giving me their hand-me-down Hollister clothing.
@sbclaridge2 жыл бұрын
I used to work in elementary-age after school programs from 2019-2022. I noticed that kids in the 4th and 5th grades were wearing Hollister, and not likely as hand-me-downs from high school (or middle school) kids. The teen and tween markets have blurred.

I was born in ‘96. I remember I loved looking at all the fun stuff in ltd too, and sometimes trying it on, but we could never afford it. There were always little snotty brats in there dragging their parents along and spending $100s of dollars worth on the clothes and stupid little trinkets, like the toy flip phones and tiny purses. I was perfectly happy getting whatever clothes my mom picked out from Walmart. Remember when they had the Olsen twins line and the that’s so Raven line?? That was my jam.

I sadly did not shop at Limited Too and I actually had zero knowledge of their existence because I'm from Alaska and we always joke that we get everything last, for instance there wasn't a Victoria Secret in the big mall till 2014. I was definitely a Delia's girl, those catalogues was something I spent hours combing over and circling things I wanted my parents to order me. They never did, shipping prices for "non-continential" was insane. I was more of a bargain grabber from JC Penny, Wet Seal and saved my pennies for Hot Topic. This was a really fun video.

My mom unfortunately didn't have enough money to get stuff from there though. And to be honest, I doubt the clothes would've fit because they didn't really have a wide range of sizes. Well, anyway....this video brings back memories I had long forgotten. It's such a shame things aimed at preteens are basically non-existent in the 2020s.
