Also, tying a sweater around your shoulders doesn't make you old money. You have to actually be old money to be "old money".

I don't get it - isn't showing off a universally disliked human trait? I thought that was why people don't like logos. And now 'quiet luxury' is a trend it's turned this style into a humble brag. Monochromatic looks are not a class thing. They're essentially 'efficient' style. Monochromes go with everything, because black and white are an even mixture of all colours. If anything it's rooted in anxiety - the desire to not offend anyone's taste. I think the only connection is that classism is associated with traditional views, and traditional views often get mixed up with traditional methods (in this case, dressing to look good). The blazers and jumpers though - that's public school fashion lol. Definitely associated with classism.

Adam Sandler has used Stealth Wealth for YEARS without anyone noticing, and it always surprised me how easily people accepted that a guy who makes millions comes to red carpets in hoodies because “hes chill like that”

Sandler is from Brooklyn and comes from a humble background with a lowkey, small social circle. He's worth half a billion and has been writing his own ticket since the 90s because he produces his own content rather than rely on people to cast him. It's not a strategy, he really doesn't care.

My grandfather used to say the true price of an item is it's cost divided by the number of times you've used it. A 20$ dress you wore twice is far more expensive than 200$ pair of shoes you can wear every day for 4 years

This style is so popular because it is an easier style to emulate by people who aren't "old money" but want the superficial benefits of being perceived as one. Society is also tired of being reminded of how wealthy the rich are through "flashy money".

I just find that all of this is just a thing in the US. here in brazil people who dress likke this are just called "classic" or "minimalist", and is just about having minimal clothes instead of a loaded wardrobe, doesn't matter if you are rich or not.

There's obviously a lot of classism in these aesthetics and I'm glad you and so many others have pointed it out. What I find interesting is that the idea of wearing good quality clothes that aren't likely to go out of style anytime soon ("classic" and "timeless") is what my middle class family has always preached, but solely for practical purposes. It's just easier to get dressed if everything already matches and you don't have to buy new clothes all the time if what you already have doesn't wear out or go out of fashion quickly.

That's so true. My parents also preached quality over quantity to reduce how often we're buying stuff (clothes or other) But I definitely remember at school (high school mainly) the competition among teenagers to have the latest/coolest stuff. This would have been the early 2000s for me so I guess that's when maxiumism came in and cheap fast fashion and toys were actually affordable for our parents so they ended up buying it. 🤔

That's right. We're not that super privileged financially but people outside of my family always perceived us as one because of clothes, shoes, bags and even items we owned. It's just that my parents always buy us good quality stuff, it might be pricey but if it means will be able to buy just one and can use it for a long time, then it is a good buy. We all got used to this and was instilled to our brain, so now that I'm earning money, I still opt buying pricey but good quality materials instead of buying a cheap-flashy-trendy one that will break in 3 months. I have clothes I have since uni days that I'm still using now that I'm working for 6 years.

There are a lot of us who have always dressed like this, it's not necessarily to do with wealth or the appearance of wealth. I don't do logo's, not because I think it's tacky, but more because I'm more of an introvert. A more minalistic style suits my personality, but it always seem to come around when there's an economic downturn - that seems a little ironic when talking of quiet luxury and stealth wealth (I hate these terms btw - if pushed I would describe my style as "elevated basics"). This understated style will always be here, even when it's not trending (and I'll still be wearing it). On the flip side, logos will trend again, probably coinciding with the next economic upturn, and those who truly love logos will wear them, trend or not!

Besides thrifting, I’m sad to say I pretty much only purchase from fast fashion brands bc I’m broke AF lol 😕 BUT I’ve noticed some brands are incorporating more pieces that are made of cotton, rayon, viscose, linen etc. That’s rlly what I look for when I shop fast fashion, bc those materials will last longer/be more comfy. They’re also better for the environment (adding recycled polyester too). I hateee the classist ideology behind quiet luxury but Anything that helps the complete environmental crisis of clothes rn I’m happy for! Side note I really wish more affordable high quality shoes were at a lower price point! It’s SO hard to find these days even in department stores. Reminds me of how the furniture industry is now

Dress simply and 'cleanly' and you won't feel the wrath of the evil eye, dress extravagantly and 'tacky' and you're suddenly the villain for the day. I perceive 'quiet luxury' more as a movement than an aesthetic. People are tired of paying a lot of money for high-end brands, only to receive cheaply made products that don’t last a long time, with the placement of a logo often used as a justification for the high price.

Before this trend, it was just known as classic style. It’s very immune to trends, because you can wear the clothes infinitely. They’re basic clothes that last a long time. Now the influencers discovered this style and started calling it different names. I cannot wait for the influencers to move onto the next trend. I’ve been following classic style for 10 years. Go around fancy neighborhoods (not just upper middle class, but the even fancier ones) and they will usually have more than one car in the garage - a "sensible" discreet car with good performance (could also be for the adult children tbh) and a flashier one.

It's because they are. Wearing chains was the way the "poor" kept their wealth because they couldn't open a bank or they needed discreet transactions. It's a way to pay for drugs or entry to a country or club under the table and get the cops off, while simultaneously showing off wealth and strength because you could keep it on your neck without being robbed.

I find it funny how Americans immediately see this as a problem just because the style here it's called old money. In Austria and Germany, this style is just being called elegant without feeling overdressed. My partners cousin wears this style long before its being called old money and we are not rich by any means. Definitely an American problem. In Tokyo for example, I think many people wear clothes like this. When I was in college in Tokyo, I wore clothes like this. Tbh I didn’t wear jeans the time I was there unless I went back to the US. (Most of the girls and guys I know wore clothes like this. I had to change my whole American wardrobe to fit the aesthetic there. Like no more cheap sandals, t shirts and jeans) Issue with the US is that professional elegant fashion isn’t normalized in the US unless you live in a certain part of the city with a certain job. I definitely dislike the ideologies behind stealth wealth & old money styling but personally love the clothing choices simply from a comfort stand point. I know loose yet fitted neutral clothes won’t always be in style but its what I feel physically comfortable in. I’ve tried to wear mini skirts, crop tops, logos, & it just doesn’t feel like me even though I love it on others. I agree these aesthetics definitely have issues rooted in classism & racism, which is just gross!

I usually love the style, material, cut and colors but dislike the logo. 10% with no logos usual have boring designs which don't interest me. The tech giant wardrobe is a lot more interesting than it looks. I've heard people in the industry say, they were able to dress that way because they have "FU money." So, originally, it was a way to stick it to the already existing corporate world. They had so much wealth they didn't have to wear suits. They Dressed like the tech nerds they are; 90s dad sneakers included. This also helped them appeal to younger workers, while making new workplaces with flexible hours, no dress codes, and a new workplace environment. Make no mistake, its still racist and sexist as anything before it, just with a "new look." The ol' Scooby Doo. They looked different than "the man" as we knew it, but they actually were "the man" all along.

Finally, the comment that i relate to! For my record, i went to law college where we were forced to wear uniform with classy tune, so for about 3 years in college and out off college, on hang outs and other events i only were classics (but i wouldn't call my self old money or quite luxury, in my country that called just classy elegant style). Now, when I'm continuing my studie without control of my uniform and going to office, i always seek opportunity to wear grunge or just comfortable simple clothes like sweatshirts, plain t-shirts and hoodies. Growing up, I've always thought designer logos were so cool, but today, not so much. I love fashion so much, but I'll be crazy to want anything designer EVER again. Tbh, it's gotten to the point where it shouldn't matter if clothes, accessories, shoes, and everything else is designer or not. Trends shouldn't matter for years to come. Everybody has a different taste in style and I'm not shaming those who love designer stuff, but half of those designer stuff, you may get tired of it and wanna go for something natural and affordable. So funny how last year, after some weight loss, I decided to invest more into my wardrobe and for my "dressed up" looks I focused on the dark academia look but it has really morphed into a mix of old money and stealth wealth, with a small mix of early 2000s bling😅. I do enjoy it, but more for the ease of mixing and looking put together, especially as there are often times my mental health is not anywhere near together. It really helps with the mental load. Honestly, stealth wealth and quiet luxury feels a lot healthier. Anyone can wear a plan sweater and slacks and look nice and join the trend, regardless of how much the outfit costs. On the other hand, clothes with splashy logos DO cost a lot of money and is obviously trying to give off a "look how much money I spent" vibe that actually is classist.

I feel like another component of the stealth wealth trend is that people heavily base their perception of wealth on the Western expression of it, which is understandable because this trend started in the West, but it has also led to misconceptions about what "real wealth" looks like. Going to a private college in NYC, there are a lot of international students who are genuinely wealthy and they dress very different from what people following this trend think wealthy people wear. A lot of the wealthy students I've seen from Asia and Africa wear colorful clothing and sometimes even conspicuous luxury brands.

I think it's embarrassing to be honest. why do the 99% want to emulate the rich so badly? these people do not like you, they look down upon you and you're crowning them the royals of fashion? i don't think so. the most innovative, interesting and fresh takes on fashion design have almost always come from working class people, we are the most creative in the space and nothing will ever change that. THEY take notes from US, as much as they will never admit it. remember who you are !!!!

@@anna84259 dressing old money will only get you some benefits around other rich people . Where I live it would be outright dangerous to dress this way and pretend to flaunt wealth . However , once you’re around those rich people they’re going to know that your pants are from Zara and take a look at your teeth and nails. I know that you’re not one of them so it really never works and never gets anybody anything it just allows rich people to separate themselves from you once more.

I always like this style because I don’t like having attention on me. It happened after my weight loss, even though initially I did it so I could wear crop tops and all the trendy clothing. Anytime I wore those things, I felt sexualised. So I switched to things that felt more safe to me. My friends say I dress basic but I feel elegant and good about myself. I also don’t attract weird creeps anymore which was my initial goal!

I worked at a place where we had quite a bit of wealthy/successful business owner customers. Most of them wore simple but good quality jeans, polo shirt and sneakers. They don't really think about dressing to impress because their mind is busy about that container shipment that's supposed to arrive from China or closing some business deal. Real wealth don't care about what other people are thinking about them, they just wanna wear something simple, practical but decently aesthetic looking while they go about the day. Wealthy people also don't think twice about walking into D&G or Hugo Boss for a $100 T-shirt. Kinda weird to want to mimic that lifestyle without having the actual money.

I think I’ve gravitated to the quiet luxury look for a couple of reasons. Primarily, I am in my 30’s and I want to look put together and elegant. The style also looks really good on my curvy figure, while being very comfortable, which was a surprise. I didn’t go into it to distance myself from certain socio economic classes. If I was 20 I would be all over the y2k revival, it’s so fun, but I’m not and wouldn’t feel comfortable in it now 🤷‍♀️ I think it’s important to constantly check if trends flatter your body and if they fit your personality before totally buying into them. I keep saying no to blazers. I don’t work in an office, they are not me and don’t look good on me. Instead I do a leather jacket. I do wear dresses that are colorful and romantic, because they make me happy.

The key is to dress appropriately at all times and make an effort, rich or poor. No pajamas in public, nothing wrinkled, not too loud, always clean, nothing ripped, and stressing beauty. Just look polished, which can be attained with clothes from Target, and you can wear the quiet luxury aesthetic and appear classy….

Very interesting in-depth analysis. The old money even branched out into many other smaller subtrends, like Academia (Light and Dark Academia), Equestrian, Old Money Sport, Ivy League as was mentioned here, British Countryside, also that Old Mediterranean Lux type of vibe (lol I don't remember the name of this style) it's usually associated with 1960s resorts in Riviera, Monaco, etc. The common thread between these seems to be the setting of wealth associated with the style, except with the Academia being not as much about the money but more about the romanticism of the aesthetic.

Surprised that a few elements weren’t mentioned here. 1) 2000’s Sex in the City leading young women to crave designer goods and believe in spending outrageous money regardless of income, followed by the recession where everything reset. 2) social media makes everyone insiders, with influencers promoting brands that would have been unknown or impossible to find and offering a wealth of tutorials and wardrobe ideas. 3) DEI and ESG movements in recent years have opened up sooo many channels for minority brands and companies that don’t artificially inflate pricing to appear exclusive (eg. Everlane, Quince). Quality on budget and access to good styling have never been easier. I can remember a time when growing up shopping was from a JC Penny catalogue once a year and the clothes that arrived never fit right or matched my personality.

Honestly, imo "timeless fashion" = "it's so mundane that it has nothing to offer". I think fashion is best used as a way to visually display someone's personality. My Mom was a very second wave feminist, and she worked most of her life in an office/government setting and always stressed academics to me. So naturally, my Mom wanted me to embrace neutral colors and more preppy yet androgynous looks. My teen years were me almost constantly wearing colors that were bright/colorful or Street wear brands just to rebel from what my Mom had stressed on me. I’m in my late twenties now, but I find the preppy or “old money/quiet luxury” relaxing because I get overwhelmed with too much stuff or get stressed out having to put very different outfits together each day. I still love my mix of prints and colors that I know I like, but I’m just as comfortable in navy, black, hot pink, beige and white. I think balance is key if someone is looking to try the office wear chic style for themselves, don’t abandon elements you already know you like or you will lose any sense of personality in your clothes. I think this generation can definitely make the once elitist connotations of this aesthetic a thing of the past and become much more inclusive in regards to all socioeconomic groups, ethnicities and size options too. It has the opportunity to be a pretty good ecofriendly approach to fashion for the main stream. Thrifting is a great way to start, you can find tons of basic pieces (most never worn or nwt) by the same brands for less than some fast fashion options. Learn about the different fabrics and materials used as well as how to properly care for them and they can last you a solid decade. ✌🏻

I didn't know my way of dressing had a name, and that it was quiet wealth. I've just always been attracted to a more streamlined, subdued wardrobe. I'm the same way with my jewelry, and I grew up in the eighties, so I know I stuck out! It's never let me down in any social gathering.

I grew up working/low class, and I used to envy other girls for their clothing when I was younger to the extent that I dressed as anti-rich as possible for a quite a few years. So torn up jeans, raggedy hoodies; basically grunge on steroids. As I got over my resentment of rich people I started wearing more fun, funky clothes and jewelry, and now whenever I go out someone always has something nice to say about my style. The thing that truly helped me the most was having a ridiculously wealthy roommate for a year in college. When I say she never wore the same thing twice, I mean it. And all of it was nice designer, name-brand and always perfectly color coordinated. But any time we were together I was the one getting compliments because the stuff I wear makes myself and other people smile, and especially if they don’t know what (insert weird statement accessory I’m wearing) is, I’m very approachable so people will ask me!! I don’t feel particularly bad about the compliment thing because she would go on shopping sprees and flood our tiny room with her bags of stuff, then coyly ask me how much I thought she spent like it was a game (she once spent $400 on a pair of earrings for her boyfriend, in addition to the $300 worth of clothes she had also bought for him in one day 💀). Other than that mean habit she was not really a bad person, just not very bright lol. I decided to tutor her for two of her classes when I found out she was failing them big time, and as payment she gave me a few pieces of clothing so I definitely scored 😂. I brought her up to a B in both lol Anyways, after growing up and having that girl for a roommate I’ve come to view clothes as… clothes. It’s important that you like what you’re wearing, that it’s appropriate for what you’re doing, and it should be durable and safe to wear. New things every once in a while are nice, but you can’t force something to look good on you if it just doesn’t. There’s no point in wasting resources trying to attain a certain “aesthetic” just bc you like the idea of looking that way. Getting over yourself is the best thing you can do for your mental well being

My boyfriend comes from an affluent family. It can be very stressful, staying at his home because everything is so expensive and I’m terrified that I’ll break a glass or stain a chair and it’ll cost thousands to replace. I remember talking to him about his mums necklaces and saying that they look similar to one I saw on Etsy for £20 (which to me is a lot of money) but he said that the necklaces are actually hundreds of pounds. Same with their clothes, my boyfriend wears brands I’ve never heard of and they cost so much money!!

What you said about the pricier, timeless and high quality pieces being able to whitstand time reminded me of a saying my granpa used to preach "the poor can't afford to buy cheap". I wouldn't go as far as to say that those who haven't much should invest into high luxury pieces, but it might be worth to invest into items which go together, will stay in-fashion despite fluctuating trends, and are of good quality so they will last even for the rest of one's life. Those type of times are usually sold at a premium but over the years, the price tag for one wear will be significantly less than buying many very cheap pieces. However, I also recognize that some people may not be able to invest into premium clothing no matter how smart a choice it may seen. Thankfully there are at least second hand stores still where one may find quality pieces, if only once in a blue moon.

Personally I love this type of style and fell in love with it because of Shiv in Succession series mentioned in this video yay. I immediately sensed that the way she and the other rich people dress in the show- automatically puts them in a different light. It's this... neutral calm tone, chill, professional, work vibe, no effort vibe, no logo (which I LOVE), delicate style that made me really like the idea of NOT trying to bring attention to yourself with bright colors, sparkly stones, different kind of prints on your clothes. But bring attention with what you have to say. The characters in the show were focusing everyone's attention with what they have to say first and their actions. The visuals (the optics hehe) were not the way to leave an impression. This difference set them apart from the rest and it is noticeable. Whereas we the rest of us try to leave an impression with our clothes first, but what comes out of mouths comes second. Its a sublte thing, but I personaly value this shift of focus and i see it as a model to me. Focus on what you say and do instead of dressing like a bright colored flower to attract whoever passes by. And also, i really like this neutral tones. Usually what I don't like is neutral tones and thin cotton or breathable clothes- it sets a vibe of a waaay too calm or should I say faded atmosphere/personality for me. But neutral + thick material like of a suit is just 10/10 for me

Shiv is often used as an example although its not accurate. If you watch Succession her family is nouveau rich. When they spend time with established old money there is a difference from style to the way they act. So much so that the older rich families snubb their noses at them. They are feared not reapected.
