This is a great interview. Thank you! You touched on bone structure which reminded me about reading about Taurine and calcium. Here's a summary of how Taurine affects calcium in the body. I was interested in this because I had a stroke after taking 8 Tums over 2 hours, which contain a lot (over max) of Ca. Of course, my theory has been shot down by Neurologists. Their "diagnosis" is that it was "Cryptogenic", which means they don't know. I was exploring all possible root causes, because that's what I do when experts tell me they "don't know". Calcium homeostasis: Taurine helps maintain calcium homeostasis, which is the balance of calcium levels in the body. It promotes the proper uptake, release, and storage of calcium within cells, contributing to the overall regulation of calcium levels. Calcium transport: Taurine is involved in the transport of calcium across cell membranes. It helps facilitate the movement of calcium ions into and out of cells, ensuring that calcium is properly distributed and utilized within the body. Calcium signaling: Taurine participates in calcium signaling, which is the process by which cells communicate and transmit signals through calcium ions. Taurine can modulate the influx and release of calcium ions in response to various cellular signals, thereby affecting cell function and signaling pathways. Muscle function: Taurine is particularly relevant to muscle function, including cardiac muscle. It has been shown to enhance calcium handling in cardiac muscle cells, which contributes to the regulation of heart contractions and overall cardiac function.

There was just one area where Dr Baur had me confused and it seemed to throw our host too... that's fat digestion. He talked about the fact that Taurine takes part in the production of bile salts, which are needed to break down fats for absorption, but suggested that it might reduce the absorption of fats.

One question I want asked is whether absolute quantity is important or whether there is some trade-off or balance issue analogous to the Omega 3 vs Omega 6 ratio in oils. When you supplement some of the most helpful amino acids is it possible that part of the mechanism is removal of other amino acids that we have "too much" of?

The reason cats' taurine level might drop as they age is because they eat less. I just started supplementing my senior cats' diet, and it has made their fur noticeablly softer and shining even more after a month.I put it on dry and wet.

On testing your taurine levels - In the US Labcorp provides a test for plasma amino acids which includes Taurine (roughly $100). Seems a reasonable thing to do to help bring one's levels to youthful levels with the correct amount of supplementation. I've been taking 500 mg/d taurine for a decade for vascular reasons and because I eat very little animal protein (a bit of fish). In my late 60s now, and plan to have this testing done then step up taurine as needed to get to levels of 20 to 30 yo. Amino acid profile provides other useful data such as leucine and isoleucine and methionine levels all of which might pay a role in aging and health.

@msplateaugal 10 ай бұрын
@@bgrobbins Theoretically, it is possible that some of these molecules could interfere with each other so that there is reduced effect. Those of us who take supplements are often comforted by the fact that they arise naturally, and we don’t normally expect two types of food we eat to interact with each other in a negative way., if each is fine on its own. So I would expect “subtraction” to be an exception. Pharmaceuticals are entirely different, of course.
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 10 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for your question. There has been very little work done on multiple interventions that I am aware of. The one organization that is looking into this is Aubrey de Grey's LEV Foundation which is trying multiple interventions (rapamycin, a senolytic, telomere extension, stem cell therapy). It would be interesting to see if he is considering taurine as an intervention.

@@msplateaugal One idea in that vein is I think someone should do a "Kreb's cycle supplement" so that whichever branch of the Kreb's cycle is impaired the nutrition would be there to fix it. Not additive, but rather moving the average benefit in sample closer to the max benefit in sample.

Is taurine impacting the same pathways (in mice anyway) as glyNAC?
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 10 ай бұрын
Hi Anthony, thanks for the question. I don't think so. GlyNAC is helping to recover the glutathione levels which is not one of the effects of taurine. As discussed with Dr Baur it is not clear which of the many pathways impacted by taurine is causing the life extension. Which leads to the question as to whether they would have additive effects if used together.

My supplements cost keeps going up as I hear about new molecules, but my grocery bill has gone down because I never buy dairy or processed food anymore. I eat very little meat, too. I also rarely dine in restaurants anymore. I would have thought such a life style was impossible or boring, but now I will never go back because I feel remarkably better in all ways. I try to be flexible when out with friends, and this is important, too. So ask yourself how much you spend on food each month vs supplements, and see if this changes over time.

Hi thanks for your question. Real food is always the first and best option. I am planning to do a video on the supplements that I take. There is always more that you can do or take for longevity. @@ModernHealthspan Many of us are eager to see your video. You are putting a lot of effort into finding a safe and effective path that seems to be working well for you, and are doing the world a great public service. Regarding replacing real foods with supplements, the supplement industry seems to be constantly evolving and now there are supplements that are probably better for us or more effective than the original food. I am thinking of liver from grass-fed beef as an example. David Sinclair says we cannot consume enough resveratrol to get full benefits by consuming food. I rely partially on powder forms of bone broth, collagen, and whey protein and have cut back on meat. Your choices influenced mine!

@17:00 prof.J. Baur tells us we don't get grams of taurine in food but rather 100mg. Well, to be more accurate it depends largely of what you eat in a day. If you eat no more than 200g of beef each day that may be true. But if you have an animal based diet and eat a lot of meat and tuna everyday (roughly 1g of taurine per 100g for tuna) you could very easily get more than 2 grams. I also noticed that vegans had lower levels of taurine (-15%) and he said (@12:44) "they were able to compensate pretty well for the total loss of taurine from the diet". I disagree. As we generally eat a plant based diet (most of our calories come from sugar, seed oils and cereals) we have very probably sub-optimal levels of taurine in the blood, so having 15% less than an average level which is, most likely, already too low is certainly not a good idea. And considering all the benefits of taurine, even if the average level wasn't sub-optimal, having 15% less is probably neither so healthy. 15% isn't nothing! Just think about the levels of fasting blood glucose, with 99mg/dL you are healthy, add 15% more and you are prediabetic with 114mg/dL. Could the longevity of the Japaneses be attributed to their large intakes in fish and particularly in tuna?

I've been vegan for over a decade and I have yet to meet another vegan (in a large community) that forces their cats to be vegan. Most cat owners know that taurine is essential in their diet and that they are obligate carnivores unlike us. I do know a couple people (very few) that have vegan dogs and they thrive but the companies that make that food do a lot of research apparently. Vegans should not force their lifestyles on any other living being, especially those that cannot choose for themselves. Being said my one cat steals spinach off my plate and loves peanut butter and melon. The others do not. They are normal. :)

It is possible to make a vegan cat food, but you have to put more money into paying scientists. Normally the issue is moot because pets don't eat human food at all. Pets generally eat either bagged or canned pet food that is either nutritionally complete or it isn't. Arguably adding meat to pet food has its own problems because the meats used are ones not saleable to humans anyway.
