Interesting comment - at your annual physical, if your doctor doesn't already test Uric Acid levels, just ask them to. I've had some bouts of gout and kidney stones over the past 8 years. Asked my doctor to test for Uric Acid on blood work in the past and the response was, why test it, we know it's high. You have gout. I'm presently reading Drop Acid and it is giving me numerous insights that I'm confident will improve my overall health going forward. Thank you so much!

Thanks for that video, it resonates well with my experiences. I had hyperuricemia my self for 25 years including occasional (1...2 per year) gout flares. For those not having them: they can be extremely painful. I was told to lose weight, tried it and got gout from fasting - so I experienced that part myself. This led me to the idea to measure my urine pH, since fasting can lead to urinary ketone excertion which acidify the urine. I found that my urine was - on a std. western diet -always below pH 6, and especially acidic with fasting - as expected. I took alkaline supplements (potassium and magnesium citrate) which increase urine pH and reduced gout in frequency and severity. I found a paper in pubmed describing exactely that: "Urine alkalization facilitates uric acid excretion", Kanbara et al., Nutr. J., 2010. Increasing urine pH from 5.5 to 7 doubles the uric acid excretion. For me the model ist very simple (most likely much too simple), based on the chemistry law of mass action. Any technical reverse osmosis system - and kidneys are exactly that - would behave like that. It it harder to up-concentrate acids into an ever increasing acid solution. The osmotic back-pressure would stop the up-concentration- On the other side the acids would flow freely into an alkaline solution. So a simple method to reduce blood uric acid is to keep the urine around pH 7.0 by means of nutrition (foods and/or supplements). The second step for me was going low carb, this limits fruits to occasional low-fructose types and succrose at all. Since than I had'nt any gout flare and my blood uric acid (home-tested since a year with such a device as shown in the video) is fine now. Unfortuneatly non of the doctors I have seen in the 25 years on the topic of gout and hyperuricemia has told me anything of this. I was prescribed allopurinol and that's it. The physiology is widely unknown in the practicing medical community.

Really I’m sick to death of that evaluation of reference range. I want optimal on all my labs. But it’s so biased unless one searches the internet for optimal suggestions it’s nearly impossible to get a straight answer from my PCP which is PAID to help me with better health! Example if A1c is 7 - which is horrible- there’s no reaction. I want at least to strive for optimal which is closer to 5.4. Currently I’m at 5.9 but it doesn’t concern my doc in the least. THAT is wrong!

Note that there are two perspectives on time-restricted eating. The most common interpretation is that the actual delay is the important thing. The alternative explanation is that it is not the size of the eating window, but rather the number of calories you move earlier in the day that is the magic ingredient. If you can avoid calorically dense foods late in the evening you get better sleep, avoid weight storage, and are more likely to have your calories contribute to a strong metabolism.
@ModernHealthspan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing. There does seem to be debate over this and I have not seen a definitive answer. Dr. Stanfield quoted a Cochrane report saying the TRE, when adjusted for calories, was not effective. Certainly eating shortly before sleep is not good for the reasons that you mention. I also find that having a shorter eating window makes it easier to eat less calories overall which is also positive.

I just got a uric acid meter. Mine 5.6 and I had a craft beer last night. Had first ever gout attack 3 weeks ago. I am keto fat adapted no fructos etc. I think it is from proton pump inhibiter omeprazol started Nov 2021. Or I make my own fructose due to insulin resistance.

Bought that exact tester (now sold out at Amazon) and my numbers are scary. I bought his book. Wish he had put the recommendations in the front end and talk theory in the back half. Just learned (from the Internet) that a high fat diet can hinder the expulsion of uric acid. I had been sucking down the mixed nuts, also daily cod liver oil (for Omega-3's) or olive oil. Tossed the nuts and plan on reducing the oils. Also this week I'm doing Fisetin and quercetin (1st week of every month) so I was wondering if a senolitic might cause a spike. And, I just finished my 2nd, two-week CGM (Levels) and my glucose is perfect so I'm not sure if glucose really tracks uric acid all that well.
@ModernHealthspan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, thanks for sharing. Interesting point about the high fat diet inhibiting uric acid expulsion, because those seem like healthy fats. Maybe it is like Dr. Lustgarten found, improving one biomarker may have a negative impact on another. With respect to quercetin Dr. Perlmutter mentions it as a supplement to decrease uric acid.

I know someone that has gout, but insists upon consuming 5 tablespoons of brewer's yeast every morning, and has done so for the last 20 years. Yeast are very high in purines resulting in high uric acid numbers. I have warned him based upon my internet research ... but to no avail. He does listen to specialists and a word from you might get through to him.

Is there a better time of day to check your uric acid. I would think checking it an hour after eating 3 pounds of liver washed down with a 6 pack of beer would not be good. I am on an 18-6 time restricted eating plan (for years now). Should I check it just before my first meal?

No where accurate enough. PH of urine contains lots of other things acidic than just uric acid. They are just color chip referenced litmus strips. No Dr. uses them for uric acid gout.

Because it takes years tonlosere the symptoms. Keep UA low.

Because blood has no nerve endings. Because pain/inflammation is centered at the site of long ago formed UA crystals. You can have gout flares day or night, winter/summer with high or low blood UA levels. Read up on the dynmics of UA gout. Pain is just a smoke alarm. Find the fire.

72 hours is hardly enough time for the average person to run through the stored calories to the point it will start to "break down body tissue for fuel". Most of us have about 21-30 days of it before this happens. A 3day fast will not raise uric acid.
@vmx000011 ай бұрын
Your statment is incconsistent with my experience: I have done a uric acid test after a 3-day fast many times. My uric acid level is always 3 to 5 point higher than my normal level after the fast.
