Why we should be supporting our locally owned groceries, even if they cost more.

The mom and pop stores left my area decades ago, but at least there's still a small, although chain store, run by a husband in wife in my town. Often, the prices there are better than big box. I do like to support my locals, too. Canning some oranges today and will be freezing eggs from their store.

In central Gratiot County Michigan, Walmart had few eggs but the ones they had were all cage free and in very flimsy cartons, even the cashier was complaining about the cartons. I paid $6.72 for 18 count

Southern Indiana here. We’re starting to notice smaller scale stores almost always stocked and expanding- while still being busy. That’s a good sign. Walmart always seems picked over. Make you wonder!

I live on the shore in Connecticut...I am fortunate to have a farm store the next town over where I get my eggs/milk/meat. No problems there. There are 2 big grocery stores that I frequent and they have had empty egg shelves for almost 2 weeks now. Also, there was a farm on Long Island that just had to euthanize 100,000 ducks because of "bird flu". The worst part is that most people in my area are so oblivious to what is coming...

One of the things I like about my area is, although it is a medium sized heavy industrial city, it is surrounded by farming areas with lots of small family run produce stands. Prices tend to be higher, but you know the fruits and veggies were grown locally and picked close to ripe. I'm grateful to know how to preserve food, if we start to have serious supply chain issues, I can do my winter shopping from the racks of mason jars in my basement. I already have way more jam than I can ever consume in my lifetime! Great for bartering if it becomes necessary... I haven't yet had to turn to my buckets of powdered eggs, but they are there if I need them.

Hit those scratch and dent if you can. Remember dents are ok, not sharp creases. Out of date? Good looking cans and jars are good *way* past the date. Familiarize yourself with best by and expires labeling. Also, dehydrate and vac seal or freeze if the date is close.

Makes me wonder if the bigger companies are somehow working with the government (especially members of the previous administration) and actually finding ways to put these small businesses our of business. i.e. finding ways to buy the locations then jacking up the rent/etc enough to put them out of business?? Throw any fiddling from the WEF/WHO in there as well.

I actually just got back from a small local grocery store that has a Butcher shop and twice a year they have a truckload meat sale and I just topped of my chest freezer with chicken and pork and just got an 18 pack of eggs for $5.25. Be safe and have a great Sunday.

Modern Refugee- you might want to read a book entitled THE TASTE OF WAR, will put the last decade in a very different prospective as well as cause/origins of WWII. Locally sourced eggs from Amish are now $3.75 a dz. I made the foolish decision to switch chicken feeds and my hens stopped laying, even when I switched the back over no eggs. We have two cows going to the butcher next week- we keep half of one cow and the others get sold. Our pig goes at the end of February and we keep half of it. We are considering getting 3 (instead of 2) calves this spring considering the price of beef. Hoping we will be able to get chicks this spring, we got rid of our rooster since the hens we had were all his off spring- so we can’t incubator our own eggs this year

GM MR. I saw a video yesterday, January 25th called A Fire Starter. Robbie’s,most got hit in the head with someone firing off rockets in SCA. Her home camera and neighbor caught it all. The police think arson, but this just proves it to the nay sayers. Very interesting video.

I think that people will raid the legumes/beans whenever eggs and chicken are gone. Beef is already out of reach for a lot of people. Affordable proteins are getting scarce. Prep, prep, prep.

Q Sometimes it is more prudent To buy it ready made. Dollar Tree stores. Every store has different items stocked. If you drive around, you'll be able to buy quality and quantity for your pantry. At $1.25/item. I couldn't can pickles that cheap if I have to buy the jars, the cucumbers, the pickling slice, pay for the electricity on the stove...etc...so you have to do mental math to see if its worth it. More often than not, you're better off buying it. Unless it's a very rare special thing. Than it's worthwhile to put in that effort. Q
