I have been out of this hobby for far too long, really need some new permissions to get back into it. Here are a couple of tips that I would suggest for a newbie to the hobby: 1) Get a pinpointer; a probe shaped metal detector with a very short range that makes -- you guessed it-- pinpointing your find much quicker and easier. 2) To narrow your search area before starting to dig pass the detector side to side to locate your find in the X axis then forward and back to locate it in the y axis that way you spend less time rummaging around. 3) Be cognisant of the fact that the detector only searches the ground directly under it so be thorough. Imagine that you are painting the ground with it and be aware of any patches you are missing if your walking pace becomes too fast or if you are being too erratic. Enjoy!
@35manning2 жыл бұрын
In regards to number 2, let's improve on that. First, understand that most detectors do not detect in the centre of the coil, but in fact that is a blind spot. The most accurate reading is when you start detecting the object. Rather then just sweeping left / right, sweep in from the left and find the edge, sweep in from the right and find the edge. If your coils detection edge closest to the direction of movement (the right edge if moving left to right) are over the same spot when you have peak signal, you likely have a very small or thin object. Another way to more accurately identify an object is to do more of a flower pattern. Move in from one side of the find until peak detection, then move out, slightly clockwise and back in as if drawing flower petals. Repeat until you've made it all the way around, you can tell not only the centre of the object but often its size and shape too. On issue number 3, that ultimately comes down to good planning. Having a path to follow, making clear accurate side to side moves (no sweeping in an arc like every idiot on TV does) with single footsteps between each movement while overlapping your search lanes so nothing is missed. But also, by not having your sensitivity turned too low. It's better to have too many false positives then a single false negative.

1:07 Not like sonar. Sonar bounces a signal off of an object and listens for a return. A metal detector acts as an AC electromagnet to induce current to flow in metallic/conductive materials. A moving current causes the materials themselves to act as magnets. The receiver coil can then detect the magnetic field given off by the metallic/conductive object. This is why a metal detector doesn't just pick up hard objects as sonar/radar would do. It only picks up objects in which a current can be induced using a magnetic field.
@FusionDeveloper2 жыл бұрын

So SONAR can work on a stationary object from a stationary detector, but a metal detector needs to be moving relative to the metal object. That makes sense - thanks!
@Aksel272 жыл бұрын
Oh, so that makes sense why the feral pig required such a short range - maybe it could be increased if they waved the detector across the pig instead of just drawing it closer.
@timharig2 жыл бұрын
@@Aksel27 Neither the detector nor the object need to be moving relative to each other -- at least in theory. All that needs to move is the fields in accordance with Ampère's Law. This is done with alternating current -- so the objects themselves need not move. If you have better luck moving your detector, it probably has to do with the design of the discriminator circuit on your detector. The detection coil receives magnetic fields from the induction coil as well as from object including any noise from the oscillator or the environment. So it is looking, not for a specific level in the fields, but for any significant transient in the fields from the steady state that might indicate the introduction of conductive/metallic object. One simple way to achieve that is to use a differentiator to measure the magnitude of the change of the fields. Then it triggers on the magnitude of the change of the field rather then on the magnitude of the field itself, thus removing any effect of gradual shifts in the oscillator or environment. The pitfall of that simple design is that it will only then trigger when the object is first detected. After that, the field level with the object becomes the new steady state and a new change needs to occur to trigger another detection. So if your detector uses this kind of trigger, you may need to be constantly moving the detector to keep generating trigger events. A more sophisticated discriminator circuit or detection software might track the changes in steady state over time or keep the induction field calibrated so that it doesn't require constant movement to stimulate the triggers.

I recommend that besides getting the big detector, that you also get a pin pointer. You can find them on amazon. They are about the size of a big flashlight and it helps you determine where an object is. So say you get a hit and you dig a hole, then your big detector doesn't hit in the hole, but hits on the mound of dirt you dug out. You take the pin pointer out and you can go through the dug up dirt handful by handful to find the stupid pop can top that you thought was treasure. The pin pointer really makes things easier and a lot more enjoyable. And as a PSA: please fill your holes back in.

Been metal detecting for 30+ years now. The first thing you need to do is keep the search coil just above and parallel with the surface, then you overlap each swing by 50 percent. The detector he was using is a bottom of the line inexpensive machine, but, it still has basic notch discrimination. Which means it can be set to discriminate out iron and other targets not desired by the user. The sky is the limit with metal detectors these days, there are units so sophisticated now that they will do practically everything except dig the hole for you. It's actually a very enjoyable hobby(and sometimes a profitable one) once you advance through the learning curve of how to properly use the machine

Umm, the signal strength of DOES increase in strength as the detector head approaches the reflective material. Cheap detectors like the one used here just "beep" on crossing a threshold, good detectors "translate" the signal into audio and you can get a pretty good idea of the size and even shape of buried objects using that information along with the right techniques.

You're not using it correctly. You have to think "this is _only_ detecting while sweeping side to side". It requires motion. If you have metal right in front of the coil, and there isn't any motion, you can't detect it. Tips for homing in on something small once you have a hit: sweep inward toward it from all directions and note the point of convergence, and/or shovel and spread out the dirt, resweep, and continue to separate out portions until you find the object
