I have such fond memories of this game. I didn't own it, but my aunt and uncle did (my aunt also introduced me to the Zelda series on NES and Battletoads). I spent a lot of time at their house during the summers and my younger brother and I would play this game all the time. I introduced my kids to it a few years ago and they enjoy playing it to this day. Always wondered how the water worked... These behind the code videos are amazing for someone like me who knows enough to know what they did, but not how they did it.

The Stamper brothers are absolute legends. It was such a joy disassembling and learning from their early ZX Spectrum code way back when I was about sixteen and they were known as Ultimate (Play the Game) aka Ashby Computers and Graphics.

I honestly love both games equally, and have always been disappointed the series wasn't continued; I would absolutely love a game like Blue Storm but with the depth of the campaign mode in Gran Turismo 4 for example, lol. The gameplay is just so good and fulfilling on a basic level compared to almost any other racing game (aside from Gran Turismo, which is just in its own category for me...), every race feels different due to how much the water affects everything; that's one of the reasons I loved Blue Storm so much, despite having had the original since it came out and playing the hell out of it prior, because it really was a lot more than just a graphical upgrade, it also added to the complexity and variability of the water conditions, making the game even more replayable than the original. Unlike the original, the weather and wave conditions were completely independent of the tracks, so while every track had a default set of conditions (ie the placid lake equivalent track is default lowest wave setting with fog, but it can be played in a storm with the most extreme waves if you want), there was effectively a ton more variety and replayability to the game than there was in the original. Which is why I've always been disappointed that most people took the opinion you do, that it was less impressive because it had already been done, despite it actually having much more varied gameplay and replayability, and fundamentally more complex and impactful wave types/water patterns, on top of looking vastly better. Perhaps it should have added a more in depth gameplay mode to get people's attention and clearly set itself apart... but I also feel like the attitude of people thinking they had "already played it" (a nonsense attitude which can logically be applied to almost any game ever made) or that it was unimpressive because it had been done ONCE before, ever, was so pervasive that it probably didn't have a chance no matter what it added, unfortunately.

I agree completely. Blue Storm was amazing and its waves hold up so well. Having the different weather effects really added to the experience. Your comparison to Gran Turismo's career mode is apt. A sequel could really expand on the championship mode in Blue Storm. Some people didn't like the crew chiefs each character had, but I liked their commentary. If they gave us a career mode like in GT they could expand on the crew chiefs and their relationship with the riders. (All of a sudden I have the idea to give the career/championship mode RPG elements like Square Soft's obscure title, Racing Lagoon). The tech in Blue Storm is overlooked, too. People complained about the controls because they didn't master them. The stunt tutorials were really important. I think our chances of a revival are slim at this point, though. The sales for this series might have been too low. Also, this series acted as a bit of a tech demo for their respective consoles. The N64 and Gamecube were the strongest hardware of their generations but the Switch is by far the weakest. The weather effects wouldn't compare to what Gran Turismo 7 is doing on the PS5.

At Christmas, my brother and I got a N64 with Mario 64 packed in, 2 controllers, and some strange looking game box named "Wave Race". Turned out to be a magical game. The graphics, the sound, and the music blew our minds for months after we started playing it!

I remember seeing it on a commercial back in the day and couldn’t believe how cool the water animations and also character animations looked. The bouncing in the water was mesmerizing. I had to have it! And I got it for Christmas that year.

The successor, Wave Race: Blue Storm, released in 2001 on Nintendo GameCube, is one of my favorite games. The real-time dynamic weather effects are impressive and far ahead of its time from a technological standpoint. The water is even more advanced than Wave Race 64. And to be honest, Wave Race: Blue Storm on Nintendo GameCube is still eye candy in 2022. I played that game to death haha. Can you also do a video about Blue Storm. I understand that Wave Race 64 was released earlier and very advanced for its time but I never played the game, nor owned it, although I had a N64. To sum it all up; Wave Race 64 and Wave Race: Blue Storm are both technological masterpieces.
