I think that crossovers and suvs have replaced minivans as the “uncool end” to a car guys journey. Minivans now are almost cool (If you get the right one) just like wagons have become cool.
@hotpinkfryingpan
@hotpinkfryingpan 4 жыл бұрын
this. I hate crossovers because they've replaced a lot of cars that we enthusiasts loved, while minivans were at least their own separate entity. There was no Odyssey before this one, but there was an eclipse, a lancer, a mustang, etc.

Jake Boyden a lot of people with crossovers really should get a minivan but they don’t so they can pretend like they are still cool. The denial makes them way more uncool than a minivan used to be, especially since they are less practical, and now that there’s something to compare it to I respect minivans and their owners for their honesty.

My only time driving a minivan was after a party. I don’t drink but my friend did so after he drove about a mile I made him switch with me and I drove home. It was an early 2000’s Odyssey that for some reason drove pretty nice, I don’t remember much about the driving experience but it surprised me. What also surprised me was when he told me later that he stole the car from his mom.

Shiiiit, mini Van's are awesome! We love them here in Japan. The Alphard, Veilfires, and Elgrands get so much love here. The car community is so diverse here outside the typical fan boy favorites. It's awesome to see so many people with so many different styles. This is the only place I've seen where a modified Voxy will be parked next to a Aventador at a car meet and the owners laugh joke and compare their styles without hatem

My first vehicle was a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan EX with the 3.8 and tow package. I got aftermarket suspension to raise it 2 inches, HID conversion headlights, cold air intake, reprogrammed ECU, and all the trim and wheels murdered out. It was amazing. Great in winter and great as a 18 year old towing a boat with 5 other friends and gear up top. Also, take the seats out and put like 12 people in it for heading to parties

Now I'm on the path to modifying it because my kids want it to be as cool as my weekend car lol. I love it! Its important that you mentioned the whole "giving up the sports car and starting a family" thing, because I think that's a bit part of it. The "uncool" follows whatever is the poster child for giving up on being interesting (or in the case of nowadays, not caring at all to begin with). For the longest time, that mantle was taken up by the van and in some instances the SUV, but now I think that's been taken by the crossover. Its more about whatever demographic adopts them I think rather than the type of car itself.
@ItzzzBeamo

The first car I had unlimited access to as a High School student was a 2000 Mazda MPV. Hands down best first minivan ever. It's small for a Minivan, but the space inside is infinitely useable. I had a sunroof so I was ballin 24/7. It had an extremely tight turning radius so it was the easiest car to parallel park, especially considering the rear window *was* the back of the car, so the dimensions were extremely easy to learn as a driver. Wouldn't have driven any other van.

I have this exact van but in red, same year even, but it’s been sitting in our driveway now for 7 years. It was the hand me down car that we all learnt how to drive on. The interior is still amazing but the paint is fading severely and being in Canada there’s major rest everywhere. Still an amazing car and have great memories from highschool in it.

I have to say from personal experience, the Odyssey handles very good for it's weight; the V6 ones had a pretty decent acceleration...but the transmissions are the big weakpoint on them.

Find a 2008 Mazda MPV 2.3L Turbo AWD to test drive. It uses the same engine as the Mazda 3 MazdaSpeed version with around 280hp, if I remember correctly. Currently I have a wife and two little kids so I own a 2009 Mazda MPV 2.3L Turbo and I love the thing. I'm a Subaru buff true and through but, as a family vehicle that can do more than just getting from A to B, this is awesome. I can do grocery shopping with the kids and grandma and there's still space in the back. I can go to a hardware store to buy building supplies, no problem. I can jump on the motorway and travel 600Km (~400 miles) in a comfortable "spaceship" on wheels. If I could afford it, I'd convert mine to AWD, manual gearbox and would upgrade the turbo, ECU and have it tuned. Cheers!

I got a 2011 Odyssey a few months ago as a film/support vehicle and just nice road tripper, I thought I was going to hate driving it but other than just being extremely numb and boring it's actually really nice to drive and ultimately has made my life a lot easier, plus it being boring to drive makes my Miata more fun to drive, but hopefully we'll change that within the next year, I'm planning on lowering it and wrapping it with a Spoon livery

Wagons all the way, I see your point, I appreciate it but I cant bring myself to like them. Specially when you have things as cool as the Subaru Exiga, Audi and BMW performance (S line and the 335i) in Wagon and many others still around. Although as far as I know you guys dont get them in the States.

Minivans are the last utility vehicles that don't try to be anything else. A minivan knows its not considered cool so there's never tacky cheap gimmicks. It's reliable, comfortable, spacious, and thats it. That simplicity of it is something lost in modern car design.

93 Ford Aerostar was my first car hand me down. I remember driving it by myself when I was 15 and got pulled over by a cop 15 minutes into my drive. Why didn’t I have my parents riding passenger? Truth no lies they said “I’m scared.” Got my license suspended without even having one. I was able to get it for my 18th birthday. Aced the test and my mom threw me the keys to my old new car. I must say one of the best times of my life. Learned how to drift in it. Good Times. Love your channel boy. Keep it up

Sienna's aren't slow for their size, since they have that 263 HP Toyota GR-series 3.4L V6 that's also found in the V6 Camry. You wouldn't think it, but they can be quicker in a straight line than many average sedans out there. Also keep in mind that in some cases the minivan took over the role of the light work truck, since a lot of companies gave up on making those. (Big truck or nothing, and the prices on those are steep now.) And the utility and room of a minivan with the rear seats removed is a bit hard to beat if it doesn't need to see any off-road use.

As a former modified 1st gen odyssey owner I can say it has its perks. I can also say fully loaded with kids, camping gear and the a/c on over the mountains it sucks. After that trip I sold mine. If you swap them they are pretty sweet but 140hp sucks with a lot of children.

I love minivans compared to SUVs or crossovers. The average minivan is often more practical than the average 3 row suv or crossover due to equal or better cabin and cargo capacity. I hate how everyone buys SUVs/crossovers and the never take it off road and justify it by saying they need the cargo space as if hatchbacks and wagons don't provide the same amount. I get it if you need something with awd or live in an area where you need a few more inches of ground clearance, but the average mom/mall crawler does not need an SUV/crossover

Just ordered a front lip and may repaint it. It’s a great van. Averaging 20 in the city and 28 hwy. Parts are getting hard to find. Would love to swap in a j series but don’t want to lose A/c. Maybe if I can save a good amount of money I can make it happen. Can’t wait to take some road trips in it. Definitely get a lot of compliments for being a van. Love it

One of the only acceptable crossovers is the crosstrek, it has its own identity and it’s unique since it’s got rallying in its blood. You can also get it in bright orange which is great. However a lot of other crossovers are a smaller version of the companies other car with nothing special.
