I took a Opinel number 9 and made it into w whittler knife. It works so well I might not need another whittler...., well maybe for awhile.
Fun satisfying project form a Opinel knife again.Thank for watching

You could add a custom thumb stud / nail nick to help with opening it. Drill a tiny hole of a mm or so near the spine at the base of the blade, chamfer it, and then fill it by brazing on some fluxed silver brazing wire, leaving a small drop on either side to grab with your thumb nail. Alternatively you could put a small bit of copper wire through the hole and peen it over on either side to make a small rivet.

George I modified most my opinels I got one I hand carved a deer antler bead on lanyard but yes old tools has better steel especially if its a chisel or such can't beat old school gear modern stuff is junk normally you find chisels with words chrome vanadium on I get them exellent steel I still use a sickle to mow grass mine is over 70 years old I even has old sheep sheers and a gadget you put in bulls nose to control him 👍🐾🦊🇮🇹

Not just a whittler but makes a great edc carry, Opinel has the chestnut knife, but the Wharncliffe has a slight curved edge, costs close to fifty bucks though, nice looking little table, thanks for sharing, George.

I almost bought an Opinel to modify into a whittling knife. Then I looked at my drawer full of whittling knifes. Opinel has a short blade knife. Opinel No.7 Folding Chestnut and Garlic Knife.

Have you thought about glue fitting a spacer or shim to the back of the handle to fill in the now open blade groove? I doubt it needs any more rigidity in the handle but it would stop some of the pocket fluff making its way in.

Yep thought about that. But to be honest. Its not going in my pocket be will be in my leather room O have for whittling. If it was going to be an edc I definitely would have done that. Thanks for watching. Always appriciated and be safe out there

@@2ndchancegeorge It's a really nice mod to get a purpose built tool for not a lot of time and money. If I ever take up whittling I'll try and remember this video before I splurge on another set of tools I might not use a lot. Completely aside, how do you find the stainless Opinels hold an edge in comparison to the carbon steel ones? I have a couple of stainless ones for camp cook knives and I've always found them plenty sharp. Most woodworking tools are carbon steel though, I'm wondering if you think it will make a difference for a whittler?

The stainless will hold the edge longer but a pain to touch up. The carbon is easier to touch up. Both give a great edge. I tend to strop at least 7 to 10 times between sharpening. When whittling you notice right away if you need to strop.

That's a Sheepsfoot not a Warncliffe which is long polnted and thin.

You are correct the original wharncliffe was a slower curve down to the point. This I suppose is a modified one, kinda like the Benchmade one, I forget the name. I choose this tighter curve because I wanted it to be a whittler, the longer slow curve was to thin for my liking as a whittling knife. But you right probably closer to a sheep's foot although they tend to be a little tighter on the down slope. Thanks for watching always appriciated.
