A man has secretly modified his 2013 Toyota Camry to make it faster, louder, and handle better, but why? Let's explore this.

Even though this isn't a fast car, I prefer reviews like this over reviews of $100,000 cars I will never own. I'm glad you started this series.
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
SkiDooRydr lots of people say that, and then the supercars do triple the views. Doesn't make your view or preference any less important, but just furthers the mantra that cars are a big world, and it's important to explore all the little corners of it.

I really dont understand the hate for camrys, a car guy is a car guy, if he wants to drive a camry so be it, there are lots of worst cars out there. I´ve driven various camrys and really dont think it is a bad car at all, not the most exciting, but the hate is really not justified, people just randomly comment in a negative way because they read it online somwhere.

@mondomoleno.34049 жыл бұрын
People mock, but I have a certain level of respect and understanding for someone driving a modified Camry. If this guy is as proud of his Camry as Matt says, he's probably been modifying cars since his first, and like most of us watching this, can't leave his car alone. Let's face it, if you have kids, a Camry is probably one of the best choices for a family sedan. I drive a lightly modified Fit. Before that, I drove a lightly modified Corolla. Before that, I drove a moderately modified Cavalier wagon. I never thought any of them were going to win races or be respected by other modified car owners, but I enjoyed modifying them. I still enjoy working on my Fit. I guess what I'm getting at is: Some people just do this as a hobby. The platform doesn't matter, we just love wrenching on our cars.

dave dunn I may drive quick, and I'm certainly not perfect, but I drive (what I feel to be) safely and respectfully of other cars and bicylists. The cops up there have their hands full at all times with stupid people doing stupid things in cars and on bikes, and seriously, what I do up there isn't even the tip of the iceberg. If I get caught speeding in the act, I would of course politely take the ticket as the cost of doing business, but I'm just driving enthusiastically, like thousands upon thousands of people every single week. I see cops all the time, smile, and wave, and have always had positive experience with police up there.

Keep ripping those canyons Matt!

This was entertaining, although I really have to wonder about the owner's thinking. I mean, I get being a family man who was forced into a family sedan, but why a Camry? Even among family sedans, the Camry is probably dead last on almost any enthusiast's list. There's so many better cars in the segment. Honda Accord Sport, Mazda 6, Ford Fusion, etc.

So I was looking at the older 96-01 Camrys, plan was to buy one that needed some work for cheap and swap out to a 2jz-gte and have a nice little sleeper that I could throw some car seats in the back of and if the kids puke all over it no big deal. But your comment got me to do some searching and TRD made a super charger for the 97-2000 3.0 v6 that was in the Camry, but that only bumps it up to 242hp and the 2jx-gte is 321.... any way I am just going to split the difference and buy a GS300 that needs no work on CL for 3k as soon as I sell my mustang.

These one-takes have been the best thing to happen to youtube since the original Will it Blend videos. One thing I'd like to see is some sort of HUD with the map and your progress along the route displayed on the screen. Like the mini-map in Forza etc. These videos are perfect for the mechanism and it's the kind of thing that the TST audience would really appreciate.

so, your solution to cheap videos is to add expensive CGI? That makes no sense.

Heh, that was very interesting. Partly because I've heard people talk about the current gen Camry as "finally they drive decently!" and "the SE is sporty!" and stuff like that. So to have your impressions of this modded one vs. other enthusiast owned cars puts things in perspective...the current Camry may not be back of the pack in the mid-sized sedan segment, but that doesn't mean much for enthusiasts. Also, what kinda tires were on this thing? As an aside, the 2.4 liter (or is it actually a 2.5 in this model year?) Toyota motor has always sounded pretty nice to my ears. I've been shocked before at how good tCs sound from the outside...I mean, not amazing, but better than you'd think from a toyota I4. Thanks for keeping your variety high, it's cool to have perspective on how far apart different segments are from each other...so much of car reviewing puts cars in their little segment silos and it's hard to get an appreciation for the spread of vehicle dynamics and enjoyment across segments.

I'm wondering whether anyone has considered doing cosmetic upgrades to the Toyota Camry Atara R or RZ ASV50R to make it look more upmarket? Given that they built on the Toyota K Platform, I'm wondering whether it would make sense to use Lexus ES 300h XV60 or Lexus ES350 XV60 as a basis for cosmetic upgrades? Upgrades potentially include the following (depending on what can be obtained aftermarket, by the way, does anyone know of any quality aftermarket products that hopefully incorporate multiple functions into one device, hence reducing dashboard clutter): • Alert - Rear Cross Traffic (when reversing) • Alert/Warning - Collision Forward -- Potential Aftermarket solution is the Navman MIVUE860DC TYRE Dash Cam • Blind Spot Sensor - Parkmate PTS-440BSD Sensor Front & Rear Blind Spot Detection System, Mongoose MBSW4 SURFACE MOUNT MODEL, • Brake Emergency Display - Hazard/Stoplights • Control - Crash Avoidance with Braking (Low spd) • Control - Pedestrian Avoidance with Braking • Lane Departure Warning - Potential Aftermarket solution is the Navman MIVUE860DC TYRE Dash Cam or Parkmate PTS-440BSD Sensor Front & Rear Blind Spot Detection System • Parking Assistance - Graphical Display • Park Distance - Front & Rear - Steelmate PTSV810 Front & Rear PARKING SENSOR KIT 8-SENSOR KIT, Pioneer Reverse Sensor Kit for Smartphone Multimedia Tuner - ND-PS1, Kemax Reversing Camera & Parking Assist Sensor Kit, Powertrain 4.3in. Reversing Camera With Sensors, PARKMATE REAR PARKING ASSIST SYSTEM WITH AUDIBLE ALERT • LED Headlights • Daytime Running Lamps - LED • High Beam Auto Dipping • Rain Sensor (Auto wipers) • Power - Tailgate/Boot • Digital Radio Receiver (DAB+) • Colour Display Screen - Front • Digital Instrument Display - Partial • Tyre Pressure Sensor -- Potential Aftermarket solution is the Navman MIVUE860DC TYRE Dash Cam Additional aftermarket upgrades: Heads up Display that shows speed, GPS directions (like the HUD in the Citroen DS5), Reverse Camera would be fantastic

I modified my Camry, great car. It's a V6 that makes over 300hp out of the factory, but it's tuned for 93 and is supposed to make 320-330hp now. Never wanted a monster of a car, I wanted a sedan with sporty handling and liked the way the Camry TRD drives. It's not going to keep up with a Supra, but it can go quite fast. I got it up to 164mph after removing the governor.

I have a rebadged Camry (ES300), and it's frustrating the lack of aftermarket support for being the #1 car in America. At least their engines sound good though! Also, the V6 Camry is actually really fast (0-60 in under 6 seconds) Too bad there's no high performance Camry XRS or ES-F

For the owner: If you want your suspension tuned to the point where your wifes and kids will love it and you'll actually be fast in the corners, contact me. :D Matt, that had me laughing pretty hard. It's what most people throw at me asking to tune and saying it as X, Y, and Z parts on it and is already really fast (no, it just rides like shit). They get their cars back all compliant and think I ripped them off at first, then I take them out on a drive and blow their minds. Hahaha

6:10 stiffer suspension can never really increase grip by itself anyway. More about improving driver confidence and managing bodyroll caused by sticky tyres better... Lots of quite fast cars on relatively soft suspension (like a stock 90s STi); soft suspension doesn't reduce grip in itself. A stiffer car will respond to inputs faster, but it won't necessarily have more grip in the middle of the turn. Sometimes a softer setup might even make slightly better use of the tyres. :)

I have the an 09 corolla XRS, which is basically this drivetrain in a car much lighter (even lighter than the TC since it's not a hatch). The engine is obviously not powerful at all, but to get the most out of it you really have downshifte very aggresively to keep the revs very very high (4000rpm +). Drives a bit like some honda engines, basically. (and since it's a toyota, just hit the rev limiter all the time and it won't break) Would let you drive my car, but I live in canada, on the east coast... so yeah....

And this sequential A/T is such a princess and won't behave. If you release gas while upshifting, it will lag for 1-2 seconds, and to get good downshifts you also need to give it extra gas...

Did he add a rear sway bar? Only a couple of companies make them for the Camry's. I have one from Progress Tech. Great addition if you are looking for even flatter cornering out of your Camry.
