Great work man! Can you buy chance do a l1a1 Canadian sporter plug? It’s a tad different then the one you worked on here.
@stimpsonjcat67 Жыл бұрын
The inch plugs are different critters for sure. I feel the Brits made everything more complicated on the FAL...although I do like the mag release. I do Inch plug mods, but it's a bit tricky. Basically, I weld over the cutout, grind it out to what I think approximates the 5/64" hole in the metrics, or really just shy of that, and then I send a small round file along for the owner to tweak the cut with if necessary.

If the suppressor is adding extra pressure, then wouldn’t it work/ cycle better with a larger hole?
@stimpsonjcat672 жыл бұрын
That's the problem, with the can added, a properly operating FAL will now have too much pressure and the system starts taking a beating. The reduced hole size in the plug reduces the amount and pressure of the gas getting to the piston head so that it is the same as the pressure the piston head sees with the can removed and the 'normal' gas plug installed.

Interested in doing this on a SAR 48 plug if I can find a correct spare. The plug I ordered a few months ago looks different than the one I pulled off my rifle.

You could just drill a smaller hole opposite the larger hole and just turn the gas plug around.
@stimpsonjcat672 жыл бұрын
No, you cannot. Doing so will expose the front sight disk to pressure it cannot withstand. At least one person has tapped the gas port from the bbl to the disc and added a set screw to impede the high-pressure gas. It's a great solution, but not one suitable for most owners.
@thedesignerblacksmith59532 жыл бұрын
@@stimpsonjcat67 uhh, may I ask? How about you change your gas regulator and/or maybe also your gas block vent hole on the top?
@stimpsonjcat672 жыл бұрын
@@thedesignerblacksmith5953 Not sure I understand the question. You can't get enough regulation to make a suppressed FAL friendly by just opening the gas regulator, and even if you had a FAL where it did, you're just increasing the high-pressure gas released at the gas port, which makes the rifle loud. The modified plug essentially does change the gas block hole size, but only when needed.

So i theory you could drill out the grenade setting and have a two port gas plug?
@stimpsonjcat674 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is it exposes the underside of the front side disc to very high pressure. At least one person has done that mod by tapping the gas port hole through the block and adding a set screw under the disc.
@orionharmon4 жыл бұрын
@@stimpsonjcat67 so i drilled my gas block out with a #29 bit and tapping it at 8-32 shot it today and it ran very nice suppressed and best part was being able to turn the plug and run unsuppressed

How do you account for the heat treat of the part?
@stimpsonjcat675 жыл бұрын
The plug is not a high-stress part. It is no more hardened than any other part in the gas system and is as soft as the barrel. The TIG might take it over the austenizing temp, but I am not sure the part hardens in any meaningful way.
