I love Canon everything! I have an older Mark 2 camera with L lens that is like gold to me and still WoW's me with the brilliant photos it gives me. Canon cares about customer satisfaction. Being able to refill their printers without a lockout of the printer that I own is going to make me a lifelong customer. Plus Canon printers are great and I never have problems with plugged-up printer heads. Smart for Canon! Bad for companies like HP who has been sued for locking customers out of their printers after firmware updates. HP plays games and that's BAD! Brother has ways to refill too for office Inkjet printers but Brother doesn't have wider than 11x17 prints. Canon is the BEST! I just purchased a Pro 1000 and can't wait to get it. Day Jose, have my doubts or plastic residue in the cartridge, you have both a blackberry outside and within the cartridge. Small pieces of plastic in the cartridges is deadly for the print head. You cannot check whether small particles have fallen into the cartridges.

This plastic floats. I also flush thoroughly with water just in case. You fill about 3/4 full the flip the cart fill hole down and depress the proper valve. I have never gotten any plastic chip in hundreds of carts I've drilled. Guess I'm lucky eh? Try it. You will see the chips are pulled out. That's what a reverse helix on the drill is designed to do. Been machining and milling for decades.

@@cheo1949 I have been a mechanic for 45 years, from the moment you drill through the cartridge the centrifugal force ends up plastic residue in the tank because the wall thickness is too small. As you said the plastic floats but drilling can cause the chip to be electrostatic and stick to the walls. It is impossible to look into the cart with a camera through the 3.8 mm hole.

How can I be sure to no put plastic shaving inside the cartidge when drilling?should i use counter clockwise by any chance?

Because drill bits pull shavings out. Not push them in. And if by chance one sliver gets in, it floats. Do it carefully. Start with making a dimple with an awl. Drill a 1/16" followed with the final 5/32". Use a razor blade and slice off any little ridge protruding. This plastic is gummy. The Canon Plug should fit tight with good compression

Hello Jose, hope you're doing well. I have a pro 1000 myself and would like to know. If I drill the hole in the cartridge or do the squeeze bottle method, do we need to have the added sensors you're taking about in this video or can I just stick it back in and keep using as normal?? I want to make sure before I start drilling into my cartridges. Do you reccomend using oem ink over a cheaper option ink? I saw on the precision color website there's oem and aftermarket ink. The aftermarket is much cheaper. Do I need to worry about a big difference?? Would I also need to purchase the one time use chips if I refill using the method you have in this video or the squeeze bottle method?? Will the cartridge ever stop working permanently if I let it go completely empty? Basically, can I order the ink, inject it and keep using as long as I don't get the red x on the display?? Sorry for so many questions. Just want to make sure I do it right.

I have a hard time thinking people should drill plastic bits Into their ink tanks. Maybe it would be better to melt a hole to the ink tanks?

The hole would end up to large in diameter if you were to pole a hot 5?32" diameter rod into a cart you would end up with a much larger hole. There is nothing wrong with drilling. In fact there are special plastic drill bits which makes the job VERY accurate.

I think I understand the overall process. But does the silicone plug need to be reasonable air tight to prevent leaking from the cartridge plug and prevent evaporation or does the Pro-1000 require it to be air tight for some other reason. Since it isn't pressurized, I wasn't sure how air tight it needed to be. If it would have a slight air leak, does the ink gravity feed into the printer emptying the cartridge? Since the cartridge is taken out to be refilled, couldn't the hole be drilled in the top corner (as the orientation to how it sits in the printer) of the cartridge rather than on the side and there would be no possible leaking as could happen from the side hole if it is slightly overfilled. Maybe not enough clearance for the top?

Literally if you just hold it upside down and nothing leaks that's good enough. If you properly selling out 5/32" hole your plug will fit very tight. I have not had a single issue with any of my 12 carts.

Nice video as always Jose! I have the Pro100 now and I was planning on upgrading to the Pro 1000. Should I just wait until Canon releases the new model of the Pro 1000, or is that still a ways away? Thanks for your help!

We have no idea when that will happen. I would trap a PRO1000 now as it might be several years. Remember tbat tbe current family of printers the PRO 2000 2100 4000 4100 6000 61000 All use the same printhead and print engine as the current PRO1000. With system we came up with the PRO1000 becomes state of the art. You can't do that with EPSON P900.

Thanks so much for all the content you produce. I've learned a ton by watching your videos. That said, I have a Pro 1000 on the way. It's my first dedicated photo printer. I was curious if you still think this printer is a good buy right now (Summer 2021) given that it is long in the tooth. Or, would you recommend waiting on the successor. Do you foresee any potential improvements Canon may make to warrant waiting?

Well...i have never owned a 6400 so can't comment. The 2100 uses the same 12 channel printhead as the 1000 and so far it is my 1st choice out of my 17 printers.

Jose, since the cartridge is removed for filling, could you not continue to refill using the squeeze bottle method through the ink feed hole?

Nope. You do not drill those carts. They have an internal Ink bladder and can easily be directly refilled by dripping ink onto the exit port
