Every game ever published deserves THIS level of instruction and designer comment to address player assumptions or misinterpretations when first learning the rules. Thank you so much guys!

Jon, at 1:07 (approx) when discussing Search movement you state you move 2 hexes initially and then 2 and then 2. You show moving 4 the second two movements which of course is correct. 2 at launch, then 4 and 4. LOL, just keeping you honest. Great video and showcase of this awesome game.

Wonderful learning video. I recently watched a number of video playthroughs of this game, and in general, I was disinclined to punch out the pieces as the game looked very slow and tedious. This intelligent overview, done by the game designer, helped me understand MUCH MORE, MUCH FASTER so I am now eager to play Philippine Sea. However, as a Compass game designer myself, I'm a bit worried about my ability to explain my Divine Wind game as succinctly as Jon Southard has done here. Fortunately, I think that Moe's Fitzgerald's presence behind the curtain, will help even a less articulate designer like me sound and look good. Everyone who buys Philippine Sea should watch this video BEFORE reading a single page in the rulebook!

I appreciate this video. I’ve got this game on my shelf; eager to crack it open and enjoy the experience. Pacific Theater of WWII is one of my favorite topics to read and game.

Pure gold - I never thought that I experienced a better designer than Butterfield. - Jon is at least on par with him. Own the game myself. Stop reading and hit the Buy button.

Excellent video. This actually helps me to better understand the example of play in the playbook. Which will help me better learn the rules. I've only played Learning Scenario 1 at this stage, so I'm very green. 😀

Programmed learning for the original game (which I have had for close to 40 years) was TERRIBLE. All this did was force you to jump all over the rulebook, looking for arcane information. It is good to see that this game has a more comprehensively illustrated sequence of play, encompassing all parts of the turn.

Between the programmed learning and this video, I think it should give everyone a great jump start to playing the game.

No interest in this game. The actual battle was an entirely one sided affair. The U.S. Navy was going to defeat the Japanese Navy no matter how badly Halsey screwed up. Makes absolutely no sense to publish a game that historically should have a predetermined conclusion. Now if the designer fudged the rules so as to allow the Japanese side an opportunity to defeat the U.S., then the game is unrealistic.

Admiral Halsey was not present at this battle. By the criterion you state, every game ever done about the entire Pacific War is pointless, as the Japanese had no chance to win. The game measures the (solo) US player's victory by the scale of his accomplishment compared to history. There was no 'fudging' of any kind: the capabilities of each side are presented accurately. All that said, you're entitled to have no interest in the game; I wish you the best finding titles that interest you better.
