It's helpful to play with a companion or friend, but I feel loke souls like games are just better alone. You're supposed to feel weak and hopeless. Then you get better and on your second playthrough you're asking yourself. 'How did I struggle on this boss'. Luckily Code Vein was designed to have 1 companion, so it does feel nicer in this game than other souls or souls like games.
@sdbzfan12 жыл бұрын
@@joshuajackson6023 I would never touch a soul like if it wasn't for this game, I just don't find dying over and over because my moveset is so limited appealing in the slightest and honestly agrivating (fuck the butterfly), and I don't mean abilities and I mean movement, attacks and stamina, stamina makes me hate the souls games and prefer action games like DMC if I die in those games it's because I couldn't do enough damage or keep track of my surroundings, in Code Vein I died more to running out of stamina and dying to an aoe attack or getting shot from behind a rock, I get that Darks Souls games makes you feel helpless but there's a reason why Dark Iron Tarkus is so cool, he says fuck you to the rule of Dark Souls and just Solo's a boss by himself like a badass, I wanna be a bad ass in games its fantasy, it's why even though I find horror aesthetically appealing I hate playing them over a game like L4D2
@joshuajackson60232 жыл бұрын
@@sdbzfan1 i absolutely agree, but it is different for other people, I hate easy things, I don't play a game because it's easy, not a souls like atleast, i play most games yes, for one their story, but two their challenge, the running out of stamina is completely your fault, either being too greedy or freaking out too much and dodging too many attack and I haven't noticed "getting shot from behind a wall" yet, but it might just be a developer oversight with collision detection. I loved Code Vein, it was a great game, it had alot of twists on that old Souls Type of game. But I did force myself to play it alone. I feel like it is more rewarding to me where there is an unfavorable but not unfair fight that i have overcome due to either my skill, or my charecter's build. I have only played 1 souls like with a companion on first playthrough and that was Bloodborne, and I was just able to be like, "hey I'm low can you take agro for a few seconds" and then phase tank the rest of the fight. But in these games I want my screw-ups to you know, screw me up. Oh No I attacked an NPC that sells an Item i want, now he's mad and won't sell it. That happens in darksouls, you are rewarded for 1 exploring, 2 getting good, and 3, not being a dumbass and putting all your level points into Dexterity when you forgot to read that your main weapon scales into Strength. Alot of these games have already become trivially easy for me to beat aswell, because I learned the bosses and enemies moveset and I know shich moves I dodge where, which moves I don't need to dodge and after which moves I can attack. A fairly easy fight to learn this type of skill on is Vordt in Dark Souls 3. His attacks in the first phase can be dodges by walking underneath or behind him, then he will buff letting out a large scream, you wail on him since he is stuck in this animation for about 3 seconds, then he does 3 charging attacks the first two you roll towards him, standing up to the big enemy and the 3rd you roll backwards which is riskier but still do-able, after the 3rd charge he will do a frost breth attack for around 10 seconds that allows you to wail on him for about 5, then walk backwards because the 6th and 7th second of the breath forsomereason hits behind him aswell, then hit him a few more times before he truely starts seconds phase. I frankly still SUCK at second phase, his entire body becomes a hit box so no more hiding under his fat belly to dodge attacks and he does extra Damage. You don't want to stay in this stage long, but if you did what i was talking about just before along with exploring the rest of the level before him, you will find Gold Pine Resin, it buffs your weapons to do lightning damage ontop of your physical damage, he is weak to lightning damage. I love that I found that out, the game didn't tell me, I died, so then I looked around the level, I don't particularly like, found the resin, learned his patterns and killed it. Same thing happened in Code Vein. Just, with less leniancy, because the bosses are designed to be fought with 2 people, not 1. But since I already had played 5 other souls likes before this one, I knew what I had to do. My phone is starting to lag as I am writing this reply as I went on a tangent, so I'll make this quick, I like Souls-Likes because they are hard yet simple. That is it.

Personally, I'd give this game a 80-90. I like how you, the main character are what you are supposed to be. The main character. Sure you're silent, but your actions speak louder than your words. I feel like this game should have a sequel as well. Charlie's right about the whole depth thing. The story is fine and actually at times, pretty well written, but the gameplay could be more. If they have a second installment to the series, they should definitely experiment more with enemies. The player has a good amount of attacks, or rather, gifts, that they can perform, but as Charlie said, the enemies can be pretty lack luster. To be fair though, the lack of enemy variety makes sense continuity wise. Most of the lost were human, so it's understandable that there's not much to done to make them different.

I would be counter to almost all the points Charlie has said after playing NG+ where the bosses have their difficulty cranked to 11 or 12. Admittedly the pacing in combat is around the same as Dark Souls 3 aside from a few bosses where in NG+ the speed and combo dials are insane. It does really suck that one of the better bosses in game is done more closely to the O and S experience in a depths dungeon rather than the main story. They definitely made the first play through of the game almost solely story based and attempted to make it so that basic JRPG fans could get into the soulslike dynamics.
@LuigiGamesful2 жыл бұрын
I look at Code Vein as the "first step in liking Souls-like" game. It's much more casual than the other Souls games, but it's challenging enough for those who are new to the genre and they might end up liking it (the Souls-like genre), which will then push them to find other Souls-like games, or anything from FromSoft.

Their's also separate endings you can get if you care enough for running through the game to add more played hours.

I disagree with your point on saying the bosses sucked. I thoroughly enjoyed most of the boss fights, and yes, most bosses had a second phase, it’s just that you, and me at times, just absolutely shredded there ass that we didn’t really see all that was there. In total, I for the most part agree with this review, except for your opinion on the bosses, I found them to be memorable and enjoyable. I've been playing this game for 30 hours now and i think its a good game, i'm no Soulslike player(u very much are, or u would't be complaining about difficulty being to easy) and i think this game is a good one to get into the genre(this or Surge 2) and while not perfect, it definitely is one of my current favorite games. On another note,i don't think u are giving the weapon armor & system enough credit, the weapons are very diverse in my opinion, with even weapons like spear and halberds(that share a catagory) feel totally different from each other, same goes for the Blood Veils, with so many diverse drain attack types(drain attacks being something u did't mention at all btw). Same for the Skill(gifts) system, i have rarely seen a game with SO much class diversity, not to mention that u can mix them all together once u mastered them, it really is one of the things i enjoy the most of this game beside the Setting. If only they made getting the backstabs better(so badly made).. U said u disliked the companions right? well, they can be chatty(totally agree with u there, they need to add an option to turn that off),but combat wise i never seen tag-along NPC's being so good! I mean, Hakuro can almost kill a boss on his own, While a certain lady can blast it with enough magic to make it easyer for u to get close while also healing u big time. Compared to those in other Action-RPG's (like GreedFall) who usually get oneshot or something similar, having companions like this is damn refreshing! Regardless of my comments on your review, i do enjoy a honest opinion on a game, couse its better then most game magazine's reviews so keep it up!

When you only use zeiuhlander, revive your companion, and sit in the back of the arena while you say the game is too easy. You know the bosses in darksouls are just as Monotonous and bad if you had a free companion to sit in the back with, even easier than this game, have you revived an npc in darksouls? The boss might as well be dead from when you walk in the arena
@jacobjones23483 жыл бұрын
They literally saw darksouls, liked it, people complained and said it was too hard, so they added an optional companion to it. On top of souls only having 4-5 weapons and fallen knight armor or no armor. This game has actual variety, there are just options to make it easier.

The lackluster voice acting is if you pick English, the Japanese voices are fine
@penttikoivuniemi21465 жыл бұрын
I just went Japanese as the default, didn't even check out the English ones. Partially because weeb games only feel authentically anime with Japanese voices, partially because I'm used to the English dubs in these types of... fine pieces of art being hot garbage.
@seb15205 жыл бұрын
I think the reason English is generally terrible is because they just cut costs. Theres so many VA's theyd have to hire for each of the languages. If they actually spent time picking out decent VA's for each language it would probably double the cost of the game lol. Home country voices will always be superior tbh.

A lot of the problems stem from the power of the companion. I dont blame crit and others not noticing the different uses of the absolutely numerous abilities (best part of game), the second phases of very many bosses, and similar looking enemies having a modified/expanded moveset. None of that matters when the game can just play itself for you.
@jupino25 жыл бұрын
Even when I got into the actual combos and mixed movesets, there was no point in doing them because back stabbing and hugging was the most efficient approach along with parrying, and I only used my companion to heal me if I got down
@effive78175 жыл бұрын
@@jupino2 Thats the general problem with copying Dark Souls too much. I get it game is great, but theres room for improvement. We still have to leave and rejoin to restore our items in multiplayer. Though regarding backstabs/parrying they are certainly effective, they arent efficient once you get strong aoe/single target abilities. You can also use the abilities to help you do that, basic things like buffs for damage, or playing without lock-on and using an ability to get behind for a backstab. With enough Gift Casting Speed you can Shifting Hollow faster than a roll, letting you parry in the middle of fast combos that otherwise are too fast to roll-parry. The abilities are very fun, I do think they are the best thing about the game (dont think its a saving grace worth 60 bucks), even if they arent necessary. Light armor rolling through Dark Souls bosses isnt necessary with heavy armor and a greatshield. Id recommend trying it out, might get more fun out of your purchase. Edit: You may find more uses for things if you drop the companion. Once theyre there theyre doing a lot more than just rez you every now and again. Nevermind how useful just doing that is...

So far as I've played (no partner), the bosses were a challenge but not impossible, however that invading executioner had me going for way too long, and I had to use a partner for her.
