Professor Xavier James Cnut and Sweyn are almost entirely accurate, Thorkell, Thorfinn and Askeladd are loosely based characters, and then Leif is perhaps the most accurate character despite being used as comedic relief at the start as that was perhaps how the Icelandic would react to the stories of a Western world.
@yum86664 жыл бұрын
Well accurate in terms of what we know. Vinland saga has a lot of wiggle room being set in the medeval period because we don't know much about it but yes for what they did do in the manga no one could argue it didn't happen because we only know vague details about these people
@abingus85095 жыл бұрын
To think that only the PROLOGUE has been animated. Everything we've witnessed from the anime was just the prologue leading into the bigger main story. The main story takes place right after the last episode. I hope they animate it someday.
@humzachudhary20565 жыл бұрын
@Abazore 420 It wasn't boring to me. Thorfinn was a badass in the prologue, but he had no character development and his main goal was to just kill Askeladd and avenge his father. This made him a very onesided and boring character, especially compared to Askeladd and Canute who were developed throughout that arc. In the end of the anime, you can see that Thorfinn is slowly realizing he wasted his life on something Thors didn't want, and truly didn't know what to do after the death of Askeladd. This is why the author made him a farmer's slave, so he could have a different outlook on life besides battle and to have companions. The Farmville/slave arc was needed as preparation for Thorfinn to set out to Vinland and to create a peaceful country, and to truly understand what a warrior is and to become like his father, not some viking barbarian.
@MemoriesofRen5 жыл бұрын
@@humzachudhary2056 Thorfinn wasn't boring throughout the first arc, because he wasn't just a gloomy edgy teenager who's only out for revenge. On the surface, yes, it may seem that way, however, throughout the first we always see Thorfinn struggling with both external and internal conflicts, such as PTSD. We always see him remembering his father's words, wondering if revenge is what he should be doing now, only to have these thoughts washed away and flooded by his sea of hatred and lust for revenge. Thorfinn was truly the manifestation of a wounded, both mentally and physically, lost wolf. Also, Thorfinn's goal wasn't to simply kill Askeladd, but to find meaning to his Father's word's.
@MemoriesofRen5 жыл бұрын
@Abazore 420 Farm land saga deals with heavy topics such as PTSD, revenge, war, life, death, and redemption solely through writing, and not just battles. Also, one of the things that I I really liked about that arc is how realistic it was in the sense that the way Thorfinn is dealing with his demons will take him his whole life, as it should be, since his sins are grave. Now, if you thought it was boring, then that means that you don't like the slow burn type of stories, in which the story takes its time to tell its story. So, I advise you to reread that arc again as if it's a story that emphasizes more on heavy themes and meaningful lessons, which it is, and not a story that focuses only on badass action.

Its just too godamn overrated for its fucking manga.
@mimijeet99213 жыл бұрын
@@yuvi2284 I get your point about canute character development , it was quite a sudden change but i didnt mind it that much. He anyways became a better character , but again if the one closest to you dies , im sure even you'd reflect and be in depression until you sort things out and Canute had to do it cause he was a prince. Another example is thorrfinn , who changed drastically after his father's death but he was immature and because of his personality he decided to take revenge rather than think it through. C Thors's characater development makes sense , having a child changes a lot of things but the whole deal with him leaving war wasnt just because he had a kid. He obviously had slowly gotten tired of killing and didnt want to kill and he realised that helga needed him. This in turn made him think about being a warrior and all that , to me it makes complete sense. Also canute was definitely in that state(state of self reflection and depression) for 2-3 days , the trigger was ragnar's last goodbye to him which basically made him realise the power he had and what he wanted to do moving forward. But i still get your point about canute completely changing , it didnt bother me much tho cause i ended up liking his new character.

@Aidan S Made in Abyss had a movie this year. Also, Beastars looks fucking awful (I hate CGI animation and I loathe that animators are taking the easy way out more and more), sorry to people who enjoy its characters and story but visually I can't get into it at all. Mob Psycho S2 WAS this year, I actually completely forgot-- that definitely is an AOTY contender. I started reading the original ONE manga just because the anime was so phenomenal. As for Kimetsu no Yaiba... ehhhhhhhhh...... I thought the animation was stunningly high quality, but the story and characters are painfully one-dimensional and rely way too hard on singular quirks (Two Zenitsu scenes in and you've seen all the character has to offer for the entire show). Poor Nezuko meanwhile has ZERO personality and her popularity is 100% centered around her cuteness and adorable facial expressions-- and she spends most of the show in a box doing nothing. (Ironically my favorite character is Inosuke because his personality is so varied and dynamic; as the show progresses, I think he changes and grows the most out of the three MCs.)
@Antiformed5 жыл бұрын
to add onto my beastars point, you have no idea how disappointed i was when the dorohedoro anime was revealed to be more fucking CGI shit. it looks like a video game cutscene, i just cannot stand it. the ONLY show to not look like a video game with this animation style is probably Knights of Sidonia.

It's also the best part of the manga. With Thorfinn's character taking a u-turn and with no wartime the story becomes incredibly limp-dicked. The monologues about love and the annoying turnaround that Canute had in the prologue is the kind of writing you can expect when they develop Thorfinn in the next 130 chapters. The parallels made from Thorfinn to Thors and Askeladd are present. Some are interesting and some are annoying. The girl acting as the Thorfinn to Thorfinn's Askeladd is annoying and it's hard to be nearly as sympathetic to her as I was to Thorfinn. She also gets the better of him and watching Thorfinn grovel for his life, or so easily accept death is something I was equally unsympathetic to. Shit like punch me 100 times and Thorfinn taking fat L's for 80 chapters was also tiresome. Imo the next 130 chapters are still riding off the coattails of the first 50 chapters with all the callbacks they make to Thors and Askeladd. You don't even get to see Thorkell for a long time either, but when you do, it's actually a breath of fresh air.
@Ohisashiburidesu5 жыл бұрын
@Orbital Nexus Nah, that's not it at all, but nice strawman. I'm actually alright if it's not all action all the time. My problem is actually with the characters and how they ruined the revenge narrative. They constantly try to make Thorfinn look like more of a man by emasculating him. I've already given examples in the first post of the stuff I had major issues with. They're trying to turn him into both his father and Askeladd, but they can do that without humiliating him constantly, making him forfeit his pride and ripping the backbone out of him. I dont mind the redemption arc at all if it's done well, but obv I think it was poorly written, just as I think the way they turned Canute into a leader in the prologue was poorly written. If you forgot, it was that edgy speech about how love is about dying and returning to the Earth and how he got a +500 charisma boost that allowed him to take charge of all those vikings who didn't respect him at all.
@roliz5 жыл бұрын
True
@Ohisashiburidesu5 жыл бұрын
@Orbital Nexus 1) He does get humiliated. He begged for his life after Hild shoots multiple arrows into his legs. Now his life belongs to her too. 2) The story does try to portray him as a combination of his father and Askeladd. That's why he did to Garm what Askeladd did to him. That's why Hild is to Thorfinn as Thorfinn was to Askeladd. This is also why he makes the no-violence pact and why his hair looks the way it does in farm saga. 3) Thorfinn literally forfeits his pride in that chapter where he offers to lick Halfdan's boots if that's all it takes to get money for Vinland. He is literally asked if he would eat shit if he needed to. He said yes. 4) Idk bro, the new characters serve purpose, but that doesn't mean they're well written. I can't be invested in them the same way I was with Askeladd, Thors and Thorkell. Canute's developments were interesting and his sense of justice is interesting, but I can't see farmer bro, comic relief merchant guy or waifu as anything other than Thorfinn's nakama. Hild is her own character, but I just find her annoying personally. At the very least, I really enjoyed Sigurd's character. 5) I've already stated that my problem with the redemption arc is that he gets emasculated constantly in the story while they pretend like he's a bigger man for it. If there was more dignity in it, it'd be fine by me. If they stayed on the revenge narrative that would be fine by me too.

I watched the first season of the anime and then caught up on the manga, the next arc is absolutely brilliant and enhances the prologue when you look back at it. It is seriously an amazing story. It's a shame that the next season probably won't get the praise it deserves since it cuts back on action and doubles down on the character development. Too many people missed the whole point and are just looking for fight scenes but Vinland Saga is so much more than that.

As a long time fan of the manga, the adaptation does it justice. I do feel that a bit of Askeladd's nuance is lost in translation but the show still communicates his depth enough to where anime watchers can appreciate his complexity. I hope this season gets people interested in the manga because plain and simple, it's a masterpiece and the ideal and most complete way to experience VS. As the series continues after Askeladd's passing, Thorfinn has to face his past and recognize who he was. You get to see Thorfinn grow as a person, it's slow, it's mature, it's believable. It gets to the point where both Thors' and Askeladd's teachings impact him, despite them both having been dead a long time. 10/10

Sure, we did not discover anything new (Which Norwegians did). But we did fight the hardest and conquer the most (England, a place with like at least twice our population at the time).
