The thing is, the items being flat on the ground wasn't even the first thing that popped out to me about that image. It says they died to a creeper, but there's no explosion hole. The health and hunger are displayed on the upper corners rather than above the hotbar.

I really doubt that this was even an intentional shortcut. My best guess is that the concept artist behind the new death screen just looked up something like "Minecraft death item pile" for a background when doing the concept art and just grabbed something at random. Which was fine because it actually would have been a waste of their time to spend 5 minutes launching the game and staging a screenshot just for an unimportant background in an unimportant piece of concept art. Then when it came time for some interns to write the changelog they looked over all the images associated with the new death screen and happened to grab the concept art by accident. At what point did someone take an inexcusable shortcut? In my opinion, everone is being really harsh about a really honest and inconsequential mistake.

I think I'd actually prefer if the buttons were covering the hotbar MORE, like if they were all the way at the bottom of the screen, specifically because if I'm on the death spectate screen, my hotbar is now empty so I don't care what's there, BUT I do care about seeing what killed me and where my hotbar items have dropped to (like if they went down a hole or into lava or something)

Well... I can forgive honest mistakes like this easily, but a lot of the recent criticism comes as a result of changes to the policies that underpin the game's development, broken promises and a string of underwhelming updates. For many of us, Minecraft is part of our childhoods, and seeing it be corporate-washed hurts. Especially when that comes at the expense of things we actually care about, like new and exciting features or our accounts not being at risk. The migration system being as buggy as it was, the lack of support for people who have trouble migrating, the chat and skin reporting, the past 3 updates being "meh" at best... it all points towards the players no longer being the priority. It seems the people making the decisions are disconnected from the product, and are willing to trade long-term sustainability for short-term profit. It's sad, and I think people being upset about that isn't wrong. Saying we love the game and the people behind it isn't wrong either, but the video feels a bit like you're discrediting legitimate concerns we, as players, have.

You should revisit what I've been saying in my last few videos covering the recent changes (e.g., Minecraft Live, account migration, EULA, IP enforcement, chat filtering). You'll see that I'm pretty critical of many things. Probably more than most people. Each misstep from Mojang/Microsoft hurts them as much as it hurts us (criticism is very much heard loudly and clearly). So we should 100% continue to be vocal, collectively - just about the right things.

I definitely don't feel that way. Phoenix criticizes stupid changes as well, but if you just check the comments under his recent videos, you'll see a lot of people not just voicing legitimate concerns, but criticizing pretty much everything, often also undeservedly or disproportionately. For example look at the water bucket clutch - I also feel like they could've put in the effort not to fake it, but some people act like that single video shows Mojang employees want Minecraft to die and hate all fans with a passion. It's easy to get into a "boy who cried wolf" situation with criticism - if you overdo it, people won't take your criticism seriously. From an outside perspective somebody might see players complaining about something legitimate (e.g. TOS changes) and think "eh, Minecraft players whine about everything anyways, it's probably nothing". You said you "can forgive honest mistakes like this easily", and that's good, but look at other comments - some people act like this proves Mojang is completely incompetent (while in reality accidentally leaving in a placeholder is a common mistake). Imagine you're a director in a game studio and people absolutely lose it because of everything you do they don't like. You change some texture, people say your graphics designers are stupid. Your PR guy makes a spelling mistake in a blog post, people say you don't care about the game at all. And so on. Then you actually do something stupid, e.g. make some changes that break the game's balance. People start complaining again, but you read those complaints, and instead of considering them, you're likely to just think "ffs, they're crying again..." and ignore them. To paraphrase Phoenix - criticism is an important and useful tool, but you need to use it wisely.

I think part of the downward trend is performance. I used to play on a potato of a computer, and as they added more and more mechanics, the game got slower and slower. Got to the point where it barely got 11 FPS. Sure, there are performance mods out there, but I don't want to install mods every time the game updates just to be able to play it.

The problem with google trends is that if you look at roblox and minecraft it shows the search frequency RELATIVE to eachother. It is a bad idea to determine the health of something based on only the relative popularity of two things. Modders don't have to worry about the long-term or vanilla. They add what they think is fun, without any bounds. It can be super fun and appealing to a lot of people, but it could ruin the game for someone else. The thing about mods is you can choose what updates you want to add. Mojang is restricted to only adding what they think could work for everyone, making it really hard to please the individual.

you're probably right with ur theory that it's just concept art that got leaked, they probably just looked dropped items minecraft on google and used that image as a base to design the UI. Whether they just opened the game and took a screenshot or used one from the web doesn't matter much because when ur making a UI concept ur just looking at what the UI is gonna look like so they just grabbed one from the web since it was faster. Yeah, there is a bit of a difference between stealing art and accidentally leaving in a placeholder image. They probably just googled something appropriate for a backdrop because it's not even guaranteed the designers working on MC GUI mock-ups even have MC installed. Then whoever at PR wrote that blog post used the mock--up instead of the final image. Big meh.

Developers do this constantly. They make a placeholder, possibly from either a screenshot or Google images, and make that to use the UI. If someone forgets/loses track of it, the concept/placeholder image gets lumped in with the Final images and published. This isnt that uncommon.
