HI, thanks for all your videos! I just got the same set, but I'm struggling to get it sounding right. The highs are quite piercing, and the lows a bit muddy. I can feel their potential as they have lots of nice overtones, and a sound texture that is similar to the real PAF's set I own, but their response is a bit frustrating. Would you mind to share how you set yours relative to the strings in mm? Thanks!
@mattthrun-nowicki8641

The bridge is quite close to the strings with the screws arc’d in the middle. Neck is level with the rings.

@@mattthrun-nowicki8641 Thanks! But thy are currently in a 1977 Standard, which has the rings quite thinner than the Historics. What is the approx. distance from the strings in mm to the neck pickup screws? I might swap them in my R8 later, but I really love the low wind Wizz that are in that one, so I'm not sure.

Any idea on the output of these as there’s no readings on Dingwalls site? Which set would you recommend for style of Josh smith Kirk fletcher robben ford?
@mattthrun-nowicki8641
@mattthrun-nowicki8641 Ай бұрын
@@Funk11147 Output as measured in what- Capacitance, Inductance, Resistance, V/mV? My guess is you’re referring to DCR resistance, which isn’t the same as output, as it is dependent on so many variables (wire thickness, wire composition, etc).

It seems I posted this on the wrong clip as I thought was the dingwalls ha. I meant like neck 7k and bridge 8k etc? I am looking at the Dingwall and mojo 59 low wind atm. Maybe the mojo nos but there pricey. Which out of the two had the sweetest clean blues sound? Ala Kirk fletcher robben ford etc
@mattthrun-nowicki8641
@mattthrun-nowicki8641 Ай бұрын
@@Funk11147 Again, you’re referring to DCR resistance, which isn’t the same thing as output. Hypothetically, if you had the exact same wire made of the exact same thickness, with the exact same internal composition, etc, it could function as a proxy for output, I guess, but that’s never the case in the real world. To answer your question, I’m not too schooled on Ford, Fletcher, or Smith, so I can’t really say. The Dingwalls are a little smoother sounding than the Mojos…the Mojo’s sound closer to my ear to PAFs

Got the 59's, the low winds, and now i have NOS coming...I hear the nazally thing the originals have in these NOS....I dont know how else to describe, but funny enough, i only heard new wire sound like that with a2 magz...Like the kz's from throwback, one of my favs.. something about a good wind with A2s that appeal to me....Was gonna ask Marc to put them in the Nos, butyours sound to good to touch ill mess around with mags if needed....Matt, how do you feel about magnets changing tone? . Do you get what im saying about A2 magnets and a medium output wind? The KZs ae loosely wound, with a hump in the middle of each coil, the machine just winds them that way...Your video with the KZs? are on a black beuaty if im correct? So, the sound was darker, still a nice pair...Anyway? A2s? whats your take?

A lot depends on the specific magnet manufacturer, since there’s a lot of variability from company to company, but in general, A2’s and slightly degaussed A5’s are my favorites.

@@mattthrun-nowicki8641 Right! And i also love the sound of A2s, but i take it that its weaker so, low wind wont work as well? 1 know marc uses degaused a5's, for his PAF.....Thats a weakened A5? As if emulating an old weakened PAF mag, right?? is that the point? Sorry for the questions, i took your word on the MOJOS and you were 100pct on point...So, once in a while i like to pick your brain, plus we like the same sounds...I read your video descriptions and were like minded, i hear simular nuances...you have a good ear for sure!

And the only thing IMO all these great winders are yet to acheive so far? is, that sizzle, or crackle, the good, old ones have...I wouldnt call it a breakup effect, its just apart of the many nuances, my 1960 pafs do it a little bit, but not enough....Its like a live wire undertone thing, when you hit certain notes or listening to Claptons beano album, or even, a good recorded bursts on you tube...The best way i can describe it is? like the sound of striking a match,,,,,, that sizzle...If i had to bet it has something to do with the old alloys, and wire, interacting...The way they were manufacturing, and formulating the stuff at the time..The old ones just have that character, like there alive, sounds crazy, but theres a reason we go nuts for those sounds, its no coincedence, i was born way past the burst craze in 1980, and didnt pay attention, or know what a burst was, until little over 2 yrs ago...I didnt hear a re/issue and go bonkers, there great, but my cousin, played me a beano tune, i was like wtf is that? I always wrote, sang, but more soul/Rnb stuff, when i heard that, hes like this is what you have to do! i started playing guitar immediatly....It was like getting hit by lighting....lol no joke! It was like a spiritul awakening lol, some ppl have dreams, NDE'S, visions, I heard Clapton on A 59 or 60 LP lol

Am i understanding things right about these that these limited 59's with old wire are just 5% better than the standard 59 clone i can get from Mojo now? Their 59 clone is A4 not A5 like these i believe? I can sacrifice 5% and still be very happy. @mattthrun-nowicki8641 well when I got it I wasn't a big fan of custom buckers and I wanted to try and get the page TSRTS tone so I bought a set of rewinds they were good but didn't really get as close as I'd liked. So I got another rewind set, and they were good. I just wasn't really happy with A2's. I should have got the A5's. Right now I have a set of sunbear's in there right now. The bridge is really bright. Like it some how hits a frequency that feels like an ice pick. It's really painful after like 10 15 mjns or so. So far the sunbear have been the best for my guitar anyway.

@burt2800
@burt2800 2 жыл бұрын
Have you found success? I got a set (non NOS wire) and it took me a few days to get it right since they're so sensitive. In the end the difference between pretty good and perfect was less than a quarter turn. Don't forget you can make them more single-coily by raising the screws thus increasing the mismatch between the coils. That will also have the effect of giving more of the tone that corresponds to the placement of the screws. So if you raise the screws on the neck pickup it will become more bassy since they're closer to the neck. But it will also become thinner because of the mismach. In the bridge it will become a bit warmer. I've tried lowering the screws to below the bobbin which accentuates the pole pieces. Like that it was possible to get a neck pickup sound with very little bass. Keep on tweaking and don't be shy to experiment with more extreme or unusual settings.
@johnkas23
@johnkas23 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. I did persevere in fact and oh my god, they sound superb. You are right one needs to take it slow to get it right and half a turn can show a noticeable difference. I opted for pretty much not raising pole pieces on neck but did radius the bridge ones. Neck humbucker is also a bit higher on treble side with bass being level with cover. Will do a video too i think as apart from Matts there doesnt seem too many on Mojo and Marc deserves it.
