Consider using lego to act as the "container" when making silicone molds. You can adjust whatever size you require (to minimise silicone wastage) and no need to mess around with glue guns. 😉

Tip when making cuts through pour molds, it helps to give yourself registration keys by only cutting a little wat through with a kind of S curve cut, and then come back through and cut all the way down past that in a straight line this way you have a clean line where your part shows a seemline, but it aligns a little more neatly with the half S cut from the outside 👍

Assuming I ever get good enough at sculpture I was planning on using plaster to make molds, but this looks a lot more efficient. It seems like this would only really work well for sculptures that are a mostly compact shape. Any tips for doing this with a sculpture with lots of elements going in different directions and so on? Maybe I'm just over thinking this and it would work fine.
@flanagancreations1673
@flanagancreations1673 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely do complex sculpts with silicone. Usually you would need to do a two part mold instead of this cut one part style. I plan on making a complex mold video soon.

@@flanagancreations1673 Cool thanks. I didn't really understand what part that big drum thing played in the process, is it necessary or can I just use an oven or leave to harden naturally, because I'd really rather not have to buy it, looks pricey.

The tank is a pressure pot it helps remove bubbles from your castings. You can cast without but it helps tremendously

As a beginner I'm wondering if you essentially ruin or jack up the original item you placed hot glue on to adhere to the paper base? Or does hot glue come off easily when it's dry? Also, why the zig zag cut when cutting our the original piece from the fresh mold?
@lucasfarted
@lucasfarted Жыл бұрын
It shouldn't ruin the item. If you're worried you can use double sided tape or anything else you like. The goal is to not have the original sculpture float or move at all, so securing it is essential. The jagged cut is so that the mold fits together in only a single orientation. If it's smooth you might have slipping occur during curing which would ruin your model. Think like a puzzle with only two pieces, you want them to fit as snug as possible.

@flanagancreations1673
@flanagancreations1673 3 жыл бұрын
The cheapest route is to get a slow cure resin, so it has more time to work the bubbles out. I use a 15 minute cure which really needs to be pressurized but something even just a hour you could tap the mold while its curing to help bubbles rise to the surface
