I would much rather spend 50k a year to pay off a home for my kid = 200k after 4 years, than to waste that money on college, or for them to have a college experience. It is not worth it. I agree tuition seems bonkers in the US (I’m in Canada where private schools and private loans are not a thing. Tuition costs are similar to US in-state). But for perspective (bit of a ramble), even if my parents would rather spend my ~$20k/year tuition+living money on property, they simply can’t. Because they don’t have that money, it came from student loans or my work. I remember my teacher telling me that rent where I was going was “too high” so she bought her daughter there a condo instead so the rent money could go towards a mortgage. She thought she was giving me good advice, but it simply wasn’t an option for me. (Thankfully I’m blessed to be in a high paying field, I can pay my loans off as soon as I graduate. College was 10000% worth it for me and my future, but it’s really unfortunate how it can be such a burden on many).

Housing is incredibly important. It's not an issue that can be ignored since it impacts every student's lives. It's where you sleep, study, eat, and work, and it's shameful that Howard doesn't care about housing quality when that is such an important factor as to how successful students are. A good learning environment can literally be the difference between A's and B's or failing. If your dorm is constantly moldy, insect-ridden, and if your dorm is constantly suffering from leaking pipes, then a student's success rate plummets because they can't focus on their work and instead will focus on all the distracting and unhealthy problems. Housing, especially university housing, is a basic service that a university should be able to provide, especially for a university that charges 50,000 a year.

@user-vg8ox3he1i3 жыл бұрын
I hated that too. Honestly, so many administrators have absolutely no imagination and no character. You go out there on day one and you sit in the rain if you have to and hear what has to be done. Then you take a crew to the dorms, along with whomever is supposed to maintain those buildings and you start demanding some gd answers. It's not hard, BUT you have to have the courage to do what's right. Honestly people get into these roles and they are so terrified of losing them that they just hide and send emails.

You are absolutely right all those buildings should be condemned and renovated and the man that came in representing that University talking about when they're to fix it is nothing to be fixed those buildings needs to be condemned renovated totally especially the buildings with the mole you have to strip that down. Glad I came across this video. This is one of the schools my daughter is looking into and I refuse to allow her to be treated like this. Students and parents need to protest and have Howard shut down until they meet all demands and actually fix majority to all problems before coming to this school. These babies shouldn’t have had to do this when the employees should step up. Disgusting, shameful, disheartening and much much more! Proud of all these babies for their courage, consistency and drive. Strong prayers to all of you. Much love 💜

We did that in 1996 at Savannah State much of the same conditions. We took shifts sitting/sleeping in the administration building, the professors supported us. I went to the campus years later and smiled at what those kids had afterward, I was happy to see the growth. I hope the conditions are good.

It’s been like this since years. I have never lived in the dorm but almost all buildings are smelly and moldy. Not mentioning the floods that happened at least 4 times since 2017 !! I mean they have received millions of dollars in donations but the tuition kept rising and now we have to pay $2000 per semester for health insurance just to get tested for COVID 19 weekly? Also, everything goes slower at HU your paperwork and other stuff has to take double the time. Howard you need to do better.
@hawazin872 жыл бұрын
Oh! And I forgot to mention the Parking lots where we don’t properly have and they are too expensive even for the faculties, health care students have to pay hourly in DC street parking or pay around $10 in a parking lot per day that is located right in front of the school where the school is too stingy to own that parking lot and build it as a parking garage!!! Also, connecting a new brand research building into an old school pipes which causes it loose power with the whole school after the major flood in 2017. I mean everything at HU doesn’t make any sense. We should get at least a better school president he has been in the office for almost 8 years now.
@Nijilove782 жыл бұрын
everyone should have protested, got their money, withdrew to pursue a trade (we are in desperate need for skills), and the administration needs to be audited and investigated as wel as student housing be demolished (probably needs a fire to truly get rid of the mold in the buildings first), cleaned up, and reconstructed. This sounds a bit similar to what my sisters went through before they transferred to another university and just hearing about the campus and classes as well as visiting myself makes me thankful that lived close enough to stay home and not the dorms.

Alumni’s have a responsibility to the school they brag on How embarrassing This makes Black people appear to be beggars and complainers . With the long list of financially powerful Alumni’s including our VP, K. Harris that place should be a shining jewel. My daughter graduated from NC A&T in May is already giving back . While waiting for the government to do their part you all have to tackle these issues for yourselves . Time for a new foundation to be formed , money is to be invested to make and keep the University wealthy .

So what AJ fails to report is the REASON WHY HBCU's receive less federal aid than other universities. I have worked in at least 2 financial aid offices and at least TWO HBCU's were involved in financial aid FRAUD...the people IN the financial aid offices would pocket the money for their own use instead of dispensing the federal aid to the students. NOT in the schools I worked in BTW...but working in financial aid gives you access to info not available to the general public. The sanctions against the HBCU's that limited financial aid to them were a result of fraud committed by employees in the financial aid offices of these HBCU's. WHY do we do this????

Similar situation at the HBCU I attended Virginia state university my freshman year they stuck us in a dorm that was supposed to be tore down. There was mold growing out of the vents and the bathrooms were horrible . They did close it tho my sophomore year I was somewhere else. But why let it get like that ? They should have building inspections every few months just to be sure the living conditions are good. HOWARD has had billions of dollars come through their hands on tuition alone there is no excuse . How are the students supposed to perform academically when they don't have a dry place to sleep ! they're probably sore, not getting enough sleep, some may even be going through mental health wise the effects of this is sad. They need a new president as well ! There's no way I'd let this happen!!!
