This group was always over the top with silliness! Many 1st time reactors think VH is cheesy, but ridiculousness was a common 80’s vibe. We lived in the moment and never took life too seriously. We lived for the moment. Live and let live, baby!

Since Eddie instantly established himself as a “rock guitar god,” it surprised many listeners when he began playing keyboards on songs like “Jump.” Later on, we learned that the piano had in fact been his first instrument, and he had won four consecutive classical piano contests in his youth.

From 1978-1982, Van Halen put out 5 albums and toured non-stop. Their last of those five albums, Diver Down, didn't do so well. So the band put their collective foot down with the record label. Took a year off and made the album 1984. Super polished album. Had multiple mega hits. Eddie wanted to show that he was more than just the guitar God we all knew him as. So they added some synth, as that was an extremely popular thing to do in the mid-eighties. Sidenote: The Van Halen brothers actually switched instruments as kids. When they were young, Alex was given a guitar and Eddie was given a drum kit. They each liked the other's instrument better.

The thing about Van Halen is, they're a lot like Metallica in that they have eras of sounds. If you listen to them in the late 70s and early 80s, it sounds different than mid 80s. And then David Lee Roth left the band and they got a new singer, Sammie Haggar, who gave them a completely different sound. This was one of their biggest breakout hits that got them a ton of play time on MTV in 1984. Check out "Panama" and some of their earlier stuff, but definitely check out some Van Haggar too!

A lot of people don't know but the Van Halen family came to America from Holland with their 2 sons, Alex and Eddie, both less than 5 years old, who were child prodigies on piano. Eddie revealed years later in an interview that he couldn't read music and that he just watched his piano teacher play the song and then just copied where the teacher put his hands on the keys. You have no idea how impossible that is!!

Great reaction as always dude! This song was more pop-rock sounding because the times were changing. The glam rock scene was heating up and many bands from that scene were exploding or about to explode and reach the heights of rock stardom. Van Halen were already there and the album this is on was sort of like their glam rock/"hair metal" album. It's full of fun songs and well worth exploring.

⏯️ I was 11yo when "1984" came out. This entire album is a part of my DNA now. EVH was a great pianist. His finger tapping technique was inspired by how the hammers strike the strings in a piano. Synthesizers were some of the new technology at the time. Like everything new (digital recording, autotune, etc) it has a way of seeping into everything until the next "new" thing. VH has a long career and a deep catalog with 3 different vocalists. There's a lot of variety. 🧡

The “radio” releases had to meet the play length requirements. Live versions are where you get longer instrumental solos, etc but with some artists and bands the presentation sound quality of live shows doesn’t equate to the pristine studio rendition.

Yeah, radio versions sucked. If you were lucky, the album versions had the intended length and solos, etc., but the live performances were usually where you'd find the most energetic versions of songs - though, like you alluded to, sometimes the audio quality suffered when live-recorded.

The 80's was a time in which there was a shift in music. Punk was all but gone, disco music had carried on from the 70's and into the early 80's and refused to die. This disco music began to morph into what was referred to as 'pop' music, which forced a number of rock, metal and heavy metal bands to change, albeit reluctantly, the way they played music. Sink or swim, basically. Bands such as KISS, who released songs such as 'I was made for loving you', 'Sure know something', etc. Although, KISS played a kind of 'Glam Rock'. Strange days indeed, but the result was some of the most amazing music to be released during the 80's. Great times.

Eddie and Alex were both trained as classical pianists as kids and won awards for it. Between 1964 abd 1967 Ed won first place every year at the Long Beach (California) College annual piano competition. It was natural for him to add keyboards to their sound at some point, similar to what Pete Townshend did with The Who.

I'm with you MB.if you have a literal god on the guitar like Eddie, it's sort of a crime not to have a solo that shakes your very soul. This is the stuff that we listened to before we found Metallica. It was on the radio, it was on MTV, and it was passable, but for an 80's teenager, it more or less showcases the mainstream safe stuff we listened to, but were looking for more.

They are a great example of a pioneer band of this genre of classic rock They have that glam metal style with the keyboard so iconic 😮

I love the fact that everyone is recommending different songs, which is an indication of how great their catalogue is. But if you want to see VH with a harder edge then “Mean streets” is the business.

1984 album was a more commercial success than their earlier albums. Van Halen's first and VH II have the guitar rock sound that I loved the first time I listened to them.

Released in 1983, with lead singer David Lee Roth. This was a song I enjoyed with my two daughters at the time of its release. They were about 8 and 10 years old and really starting to enjoy all sorts of music.

This song reminds me of summer days at the beach surfing.
