Backstory is incredible. Tom Scholtz was a MIT trained engineer at Polaroid, a camera company. He moonlit playing in rock bands around Boston. He had trouble getting the sounds he wanted out of existing performance and recording equipment. He used his engineering skills to design, build and invent his own. He built a studio in his basement and played and recorded most of what you heard here himself. He brought in Brad Delp to do that incredible stratospheric vocal and Sib Hashian to play drums. More BOSTON: "Foreplay / Long Time", "Smokin'", and "Hitch a Ride". FYI - this video is not a live performance; the audio is a radio edit of the studio recording. The lead singer, Brad Delp (R.I.P.), sings all of the harmonies (the rest of the band is lip-syncing for the video to appear to be live). This song is the first track on their 1976 debut album, which remained the best selling debut album in history for the next 8 years.

The studio version is over a minute longer (i think it has an extra verse). That was common practice at the time, they would have a shorter AM radio version so they could cram more songs into each hour.

This is actually the studio version of the song, the entire band (even Brad) is lip-syncing to this, it was to make a promotional video - because they were an unknown band at the time. There's not even an audience in the video. They're playing to an empty room.

Foreplay/Long Time, you'll love it. Must be played together. Think of Foreplay as a warmup, or scales... on steroids. No vocals. Then POW, Long Time rocks, another Brad Delp amazing vocal.
