Backstory is incredible. Tom Scholtz was a MIT trained engineer at Polaroid, a camera company. He moonlit playing in rock bands around Boston. He had trouble getting the sounds he wanted out of existing performance and recording equipment. He used his engineering skills to design, build and invent his own. He built a studio in his basement and played and recorded most of what you heard here himself. He brought in Brad Delp to do that incredible stratospheric vocal and Sib Hashian to play drums. Next from Boston, react to “Foreplay/Long Time.”

I can tell you exactly what I was doing when I first heard this song. It was 1976, I was 17 years old, smoking a lot of pot, in a 68 Camero spinning donuts in a dirt field with my friends standing on the side around a bonfire at 11 pm. I don't know how we survived with all the crazy things we did in our youth. I'm so grateful for the songs and memories.

More BOSTON: "Foreplay / Long Time", "Smokin'", and "Hitch a Ride". FYI - this video is not a live performance; the audio is a radio edit of the studio recording. The lead singer, Brad Delp (R.I.P.), sings all of the harmonies (the rest of the band is lip-syncing for the video to appear to be live). This song is the first track on their 1976 debut album, which remained the best selling debut album in history for the next 8 years.

The studio version is over a minute longer (i think it has an extra verse). That was common practice at the time, they would have a shorter AM radio version so they could cram more songs into each hour.

This is actually the studio version of the song, the entire band (even Brad) is lip-syncing to this, it was to make a promotional video - because they were an unknown band at the time. There's not even an audience in the video. They're playing to an empty room.

This song has got to be in the top 5 of the best songs ever to react to. Unbelievable lead vocals and outrageous guitar playing.

If you haven't listened to the isolated vocals for this song, do yourself a favor. And remember there was no autotune. If it doesn't make you cry, nothing will.

This album was written and recorded by Tom Scholz (The guitarist in the silver jump suit) in his apartment building BASEMENT in 1974/75. That was unheard of back then, he built all of his own recording equipment (He was an engineer at Polaroid) and was an electronics genius as well as an amazing songwriter. Imagine getting these kinds of sounds on home-made analog recording equipment in a basement in the mid 70s, absolutely amazing.

This song is on Boston’s debut album. When it came out it was the biggest selling debut album of all time. And like, say, Fleetwood Mac “Rumors” every track is gold

Boston is one of my favorite groups and many of their songs have a GOOD feeling vib. A band ahead of their time and a unique standout in the mid 70's. This song and "Foreplay / Long Time" are favorites from Boston.

This might be the most classic of classic rock songs. Amazing band with an actual genius at the helm, Tom went to M.I.T (I believe). He's one of those guitarists that has his own unique sound. This first album of theirs is arguably the greatest debut in rock history (although there are others I would consider). Other great songs to check out are "Peace of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time", "Don't Look Back", and "Feelin Satisfied".

"Boston" the whole first album was KILLER !! It was the biggest selling "Debut" album EVER !! Most of the instruments were played by one man. Tom Scholtz, the lead guitar player and it was all recorded and mixed in his basement in Weymouth, Mass. He even shopped the demo to all the record companies. He was an electrical Engineer and made the guitar effects too. The man is a G-E-N-I-U-S !! He has a few YT interviews you must hear.

Foreplay/Long Time, you'll love it. Must be played together. Think of Foreplay as a warmup, or scales... on steroids. No vocals. Then POW, Long Time rocks, another Brad Delp amazing vocal.
