This was the biggest Megadeth ever was. The album hit #2 on the Billboard Top 200, they were doing sold out shows headlining arenas, had multiple videos on MTV, were getting airplay on rock radio, the whole nine. The follow-up album Youthanasia is superb too, it's less thrash and more of a traditional heavy metal record.

This album followed Metallica's Black album and they saw the success of the Black Album and also the grunge of the early 90s and wanted a piece of the pie. This is Megadeth's most commercially successful album to date. If you listen to Anthrax of the 80s it is very thrash sounding. With Anthrax of the 90s, you can also hear that they went softer with a more grunge sound. Of the big 4 of 80s thrash metal, Slayer is the only band that did not go softer in the 90s.

Generally considered the number 3 album by many Megadeth fans, "Countdown to Extinction" was Dave's move towards more radio friendly music. Not full on Thrash, like the first 4 albums, "Countdown..." has songs like 'Symphony of Destruction' , 'Foreclosure of a Dream', and 'Countdown to Extinction' which could be played on the radio while songs like 'Skin O My Teeth', 'High Speed Dirt' and 'Ashes in Your Mouth' are heavier. You should listen to "Killing Is My Business...." the first Megadeth album. The raw energy of this album makes it a must. "Youthanasia," Megadeth's 6th studio album, follows the tend of the "Countdown..." with more slower Metal songs than Thrash inspired. A great album though. Dave's writing become a bit sporadic in the 2000's.
@mollyesanborn10 ай бұрын
A much more restrained approach to their style on this record, that's for sure! I enjoyed it though, in a way I almost found myself more appreciative of the instrumentals on this album because I could hear a lot more nuances and small details going on due to it being more pulled in. I'd love to hear their first album at some point and see how they started out!

@@mollyesanborn If you do decide to listen to "Killing is My Business..." you need to go to my youtube channel, Metaltildeth67, and listen to one of the two versions I have there. The first is a fan remastered of the original album. It improves the sound quality of the original album. The second version is a remastered version of the 2018 remaster. There, the guitar parts were good but the mix was off and some parts of the original songs were removed. I re-added some of the missing parts as well as readjusted the levels. The real delight of this album compared to the previous ones is that it shows a huge improvement in the cohesiveness of the song compositions, I think mostly because Dave is exerting real restraint and tastefulness in the songs. He's not trying to smash you over the head with a barrage of raw talent like he was in the prior albums (all still awesome). It shows a lot of maturation and skill, and their next album, Youthanasia, continues the trend very successfully.

I agree, there is definitely a certain level of restraint to this album that I personally enjoy. From what I recall, Dave Mustaine was still trying to out-do Metallica in 1991 when he heard that his former band were preparing to release an album that would 'cross over' from thrash metal into more heavy metal w/ slower tempos... So, he began writing songs that year which would also tone down the speed and technicality of Megadeth's delivery and go for a more streamlined heavy metal sound. The major difference between the 2 bands was Mustaine's lyrics were very socially relevant - songs about political power, the loss of property in the recession, World War II, poaching of wildlife... etc. Mustaine was proven right when Metallica went to #1 in the Fall of '91 w/ the self-titled 'black' album... he finished 'Countdown to extinction' and hoped that it would be their first #1 album in the US... However, when it was released in the Spring of 1992, Billy Ray Cyrus had the massive country hit 'Acy breaky heart' and his album was the pop sensation and Megadeth charted at #2 behind him... Of course, Dave Mustaine was furious... the album sold 2x platinum and outsold 'Rust in Peace'... he and the band were making a fortune that year on tour and album sales finally, but Mustaine felt like he "had nothing" because Metallica was now a massive sensation and had sold more than double the numbers of 'Countdown to Extinction'... In 1993, Dave Mustaine OD'd and nearly lost his life on tour... it ended any possibility of promoting the album any further. Megadeth tried again in 1994 w/ a more commercially appealing heavy metal album 'Youthanasia'... but it charted at #4 in the US. Despite being at a peak of their career, Mustaine could not see Megadeth reach Metallica's heights of success.

Love it, Love it! It was released a few months after Metallica's Black Album. I have to say I enjoy this better than the Black album, though I like them both. I know you are 3 albums into Megadeth, but screw it I am asking this anyways. Which one of the 3 do you enjoy of the most? For me it's a tough one of the 3 because I like them all, but I have to give the slight edge to Rust in Peace. Because it's just an overall Excellent album. Peace sells, but who's buying is personal favorite but so is Countdown. A very difficult choice indeed!

Yeah the tonal change on this album in Megadeth's discography is very similar to the change in Metallica's with their Black album. They definitely lighten things up a bit. If I had to pick a favorite right now, I'd still go Rust In Peace. But all three have been great, I'll need to revisit all of them and see where they'll fall in my ranking over time.

@@mollyesanborn I would probably put Metallica and Megadeth into the top 5 all time favorite metal acts list. Along with Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. Speaking of Judas Priest, time to start checking them out. Start with Hell bent for lether.

@@jakesmith6233 I'll definitely have to consider some Judas Priest for future videos!

Why do Ashes in your Mouth is so agressive that almost diverse of the entire album? Fun fact: Ashes in your mouth should be on Rust in Peace but they had too much songs for the album, if you search “ashes in your mouth rehearsal 1990” you’ll see Marty Friedman and David Ellefson praticing the song during the Rust in Peace tour

Theatrical... Megadeth put so much of that here, maybe the most times compared to others, Maybe the album with best openings too.
@mollyesanborn10 ай бұрын
Yes, they really poured on the theatricality! The other two albums I've heard from them had that quality as well, but Countdown To Extinction certainly took it to the next level.

I never was big on this band; Imma keep it honest. However, this album, Youthanasia, and Cryptic Writings did get my ear for a few years in the 90s/early 2000s. I can get this sense that the band must have had fun writing and recording this record. That blues solo that just sticks out like a sore thumb in "High Speed Dirt?" Hilarious! I love stuff like that. Other highlights for me is the closing track; "Ashes In Your Mouth." I like "Symphony..." - lotta play-moshing at high school dances where teachers thought me and my friends were fighting but what they never understood was we're bonding. I guess I can see it from their POV now though. "Psychotron" is pretty dope too. I made an online gamertag based on that at one time. Very cool record. Rhythmic complexity meets expert phrasing and good lyrical content.

They really do a great job of sprinkling in a lot of fun moments on this album, I agree. I'm glad you mentioned Psychotron too, that one is so different! Really cool song.

Symphony of Destruction is Megadeth’s equivalent to Metallica’s Enter Sandman IMO, while they obviously don’t sound even remotely alike, they do share the basic theme of a simplistic yet powerful riff keeping you nodding your head the whole time, a somewhat basic overall song structure compared to much more complex bangers each band can obviously create, easily digestible chorus, a “story” element to the lyrics, so for me Symphony resonates in my playlist with the same vibe/energy as Enter Sandman.
