Unlike a lot of metal/hard rock, etc. players who used Marshalls amps, Dimebag used Randall's which was high gain solid state instead of tubes. Gave him the 'chainsaw' tone. Loved his sound on their 90's albums. I was able to closely replicate the sound using DOD Death Metal pedal and a eq in the mid 90's.

This was a nice surprise, seeing you react to my favorite album from my favorite band. Yeah, they were known back in the day for 2 things - their crazy ass live shows and the guitarist, Dimebag Darrell. He and his brother Vinnie Paul on the drums (may they RIP) started the group and released 3 indie albums that are not easy to find. They also had a different sound, more glam/hard rock. When they recruited vocalist Phil Anselmo, they became the groove metal kings you hear on this album. Hopefully you come back to them at some point and if you do, I recommend checking out their major label debut, Cowboys From Hell.

Oh awesome! I can see why this is your favorite album, this thing is absolutely jam packed with energy and a lot of variety too. Such a fantastic introduction to Pantera's music. I'll definitely be doing more of their albums, I'd be really curious to check out their early glam rock projects too, that would be very interesting to hear!

Far Beyond Driven actually hit number one in the mid-nineties. The irony of that is mind blowing in the era where hip hop was in it's prime. You need to have a listen for sure.

I'm not sure if it was pointed out already, but on Live in a Hole one of the distortion effects used is a talk box (sometimes referred to as voice box). It's an effect that lets you control the sound of the guitar using your voice, kinda mixing them together. A famous example of its use is Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, where you can almost hear the guitar go "wow wow" in its verses. Awesome reaction! And what an album to start with Pantera, arguably their best but definitely check out more of them! Well earned sub from me, keep up the great work! ❤

The reason for my having liked this album was because of Walk, since it was used as the theme song (well that and a cover version if it by a band named Kilgore) for former ECW wrestler Rob Van Dam. And it has a very easy and chantable chorus as well that doesn't hurt. But A New Level, Hollow, and This Love are awesome as well. I only slightly prefer Cowboys From Hell over this one, but this album is epic as well. Great reaction, Molly, love your candid expressions and mannerisms lol.

So glad you reacted to Pantera. One of the most important bands in metal. They kept metal going through the 90s when grunge and alt rock dominated. RiP Dimebag and Vinnie Paul. Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven are great albums too. Pantera's is called groove metal. It is not as thrash sounding as band like Overkill, Kreator, and Slayer. Or even 80s Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. If you have not done Anthrax then Among the Living is a must. One of the best thrash metal albums of all time.

When this album came out I remember going with my friends to midnight bowling. They had lights and a DJ. I’d always request metal and he never had any. So I brought my CD case. People would request some from my music. I would always request Fucking Hostile. I’m a recreational bowler at best, but when that song hit, it it was strikes. I wouldn’t think about anything but rolling straight. Silly story now that I’m old. At 14 or so, my son found my cds and fell in love with Dime and Pantera. So much so, he taught himself to play and now at 21 has more guitar’s than he can play, as well at a couple of Dimebag editions. Great reaction.

First video I've watched from you, and I love that you've listened to the whole album. You asked at one point if there was 2 vocalists, no. That's all Phil. Phil in particular very much changed his vocals on this album with the screaming/distortion he placed on his vocals. Pantera was good about evolving their sound on every single album. You asked which Pantera album next... that's hard to pick just one album. I'd like to say just listen to their albums chronologically starting at Cowboys From Hell... but maybe do the album that reached #1 on Billboard 200 charts: Far Beyond Driven.

That 'percussive element' in This Love you mention sounds like a broom being swept across a floor....is an electronic sampled instrument called a cabasa. A cabasa is a metal cylinder with a wooden handle. Around the cylinder are strands of metal beads. One can shake it, or use their hand and push the metal beads while turning the handle of the cylinder to get that scrape/broom wooshy-sweep effect. But Vinnine (the Drummer) used an electronic sample of that sound effect. He had two electronic pads mouned on his drum kit one pad was for the electronic cabasa and the other pad trigger the wooden 'side stick' click sound effect you hear after the cabasa in This Love
