As a Brazilian I should inform that Caralho Voador means "flying d1ck". The percussion you noticed in that song, along with theguitar and keys remind of bossa nova, which is a Brazilian genre, it's like a softened samba. In the portuguese part he says "I can't drive and now my finger appears stuck in my nose". Some people state thathe got hisn song title from João Gordo, singer from Ratos de Porão (basement Rats, in a free translation), a punk band from São Paulo, when they hung out, though I couldn't find sources to confirm this information. I love this album, and it seems the evolution of the two previous albums. Star AD and Just a Man are my favourite tracks, although I learned how to sing most of them, cause it teaches me a lot to sing great and difficult songs.

Yea bro anybody trying to hack their sound, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT🤣... if they want something resembling Faith No More's sound, every last band member better be an ultra talented world-class accomplished musician, songwriter, consumate professional, AND all gel together and perform like a Swiss watch!..we also haven't got to the caliber of talent you'd need for your frontman to do even a POOR job of trying to mimic/embody the type of legendary off-the-charts presence Mike Patton brings NATURALLY... sounds like a daunting task and anybody trying to produce this sound would be in over their heads... at that point you'd THINK you would just craft your own original sound, instead of BITING off of one of the most talented bands of ALL TIME🤣!

I like this record, though my two favs are still Angel Dust and Album of the Year. Standouts for me are Ricochet, Star A.D., Digging The Grave, title track, and The Last to Know. The piano line in "Evidence" is so, so elegant too. For the next record - brace for impact on the opening song so you don't get startled- it just starts with no warning. dear molly, i highly recommend going back and listening to the first faith no more album, "we care a lot". their first vocalist, chuck mosely, was the opposite of patton - but still so good in a whole different way. he was raw, rough, and full of emotions. it's a great debut album, one of my favourites as a die hard faith no more fan. by the way, chuck also realeased a great solo album, "will rap over hard rock for food" - also worth a listen.

As a long time fan, I think the differentials between this album and Angeldust can be contributed to three big factors: They seperated from Jim Martin and brought Trey Spruance in for the guitars on this (which didn't end well, from what I understand; There were payment / royalties issues - Patton has said "Don't bring your friends from your old band into your new band" before), another major factor was that Roddy's father was dying and he was absent from a lot of the song writing - this was a big Billy Gould album, and lastly this is a good representation of Mike expanding his vocals away from the nasal sound he was known for previously (Mr Bungle, and the other FNM albums he made with them - he started the variations and exploration on Angeldust for sure, but this was a big change for him, imho). This is my favorite FNM album, if I had to choose. :)

Beautiful album. Angel Dust was a Masterpiece and King for a Day is just as good. As you know of listening to Michael Patton's music, you can't categorize them at all. The minute you think you can pigeon hole them, they completely surprise you. Angel Dust was diverse of an album from a well known radio/played band that you could ever want. Patton himself is a poet and a lot of his lyrics can be taken in multiple ways as I've come to realize they can have multiple meanings or sometimes just be about exactly what he speaks of, it makes Patton a great lyricist. Glad you liked the album, for those who are expecting a straight forward rock album from Faith No More, after their first 2 albums, that's just not going to happen. It's also what made Faith No More What they are b/c of their diversity(and no I don't mean an Old Wooden Ship..."Ron"),talent, and creativity. If you want more of a rocking Faith No More, their first 2 albums "Introduce Yourself" and "The Real Thing" are those and they are just as good, also Chuck Mosley was the lead singer for Faith No More before Mike, so "Introduce Yourself" has a different vibe to it, but it's still a great album as well, especially for the time it came out during the evil "Butt-Rock" era of 80's hair band crap music.

So, just so you know, Their first album is NOT fronted by Mike Patton, It's front by Chuck Mosley, and is called We Care Alot, Introduce Yourself was their second album, also fronted by Chick Mosley, and their 3rd album THE REAL THING was the one which began the Mike Patton years of Faitn No More. It should also be noted that Courtney Love (singer of Hole) also sang for Faith No More for a short period of time. You should go ALL the way back to We Care Alot and listen to how they progressed over the years. Chuck was a great front man for Faith No More in his own right, and though I am a much bigger fan of Patton and all of his work, we would not have a Patton for any of the stuff we know, if Chuck Mosley didn't help put Faith No More on the map with their moderate hit We Care Alot. W had to have that in order to GET to the Mike Patton years. I do wonder, had it not been for Faith No More, would Mike Patton have made waves either way? Cause it was Faith No More that got Mr. Bungle on a major Record Deal, and it was Chuck Mosley that got Faith No More to the level they were at when Mike Patton took over. Can we thank Chuck Mosley for all Mike Patton's success?

Apart from the astounding songs and performances, I just want to point out Andy Wallace's production on this thing. Like RATM first album, Chilli Peppers' Blood Sugar, this record is really a landmark for both rawness and clarity in the mix. Somehow he managed it with a far denser sound and arrangements than either of those two I mentioned. Great that it was also the best record by maybe the best band of all time, a real perfect storm.

Jim Martin their longtime guitarist quite after AD and in this album was replaced by Patton Mr. bungle bandmate Trey Spruance. 2. Roddy Bottum their keyboardist was absent for most of the recording thanks to being affected by the deaths of his father and Kurt Cobain.

I thought the guitarist on this album was Dean Menta?

@@tonyschannel7438 nope, Menta played in the Tour when Spruance decided he didn’t like the touring schedule. He did started writing some stuff for the next album but the guys weren’t feeling it

This is interesting to me; I've always thought that Martin was fired, he didn't quit (rumor was they fired him via fax). And also Spruance seperated from them because the other band members refused to give him an equal share of their profits, and treat him like a full band member, against Patton's wishes). I haven't read anything about him not liking the tour schedule ... ? Do you have any other insight to these factors? I would love to dig deeper and find out more! :)

@@jbfranz7376 Martin was fired, he didn’t like the direction they were headed especially on AD. His Dad was unwell and he wanted more time off and apart from 2 tracks on AD had no input. Patton also despised him personally. The truth on Trey leaving may be grey but lies somewhere in between Trey getting treated like ‘caca’ and for not wanting to tour after recording KFAD.

Bought this the day it came out. A little more straight ahead compared to earlier albums but it blew me away ! I blasted this album at home and in my car. Sounds as fresh and powerful today as it did way back then.

King For A Day and The Last To Know are two of the very best songs FNM ever wrote. I think Stripsearch, Zombie Eaters, The Real Thing are the only songs I have on that level or higher

Someone may have already mentioned this, but I was told by my guy at the local music store that this album was intentionally NOT over produced to make it sound more raw. The feeling of this album, and the tracks of course, are in direct alignment with what Mike was going through during his divorce at that time. That's just what I was told back then when I purchased this amazing piece of work in 1995. The words on a lot of these tracks speak truth to this trivia (well, this info may be trivial to some, but I've always listened to it with that knowledge). Either way, this is one of FNM's greatest in my opinion. Although, I do love them all (well, not the latest one so much). And Molly, you did an excellent job, as always, of breaking down the sound and your feelings about the album as a whole. Keep up the great work!

I think every one of their albums eclipses the previous. AOTY is even better, so... don't give up on Sol Invictus just yet. It took me a few listens to really appreciate how they've seasoned during the years they were apart. It's really a great album.

One of my favorite FNM albums and it was cool to see a fresh perspective on it. This actually makes me think I've kinda slept on a few tracks near the end of the tracklist so I'm going to give the whole album another listen soon.

My favorite FNM album. Their previous guitarist from Angel Dust had left and Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle came in to fill the spot for this album, and it shows. Would love to see your reaction to the band Tomahawk, which consists of Mike Patton and the guitarist from The Jesus Lizard. Would also love to see your reaction to The Jesus Lizard - the juxtaposition of the tight guitar riffs and wild singing style of David Yow is just *chef’s kiss.* They fit more into the math rock / offbeat punk style that you often react to with DEP. For Tomahawk, I’d recommend starting with the debut album, and for The Jesus Lizard, I’d start with the album Shot. Love your videos! It’s so fun to listen to these tracks that I grew up to through new ears.

Great album review. King for a day is my fav track. I hope you carry on with Faith no More, Mike Pattern joined the band on their third studio album "The Real Thing". So many great tracks, my fav is "The Real Thing", it also includes a great Black Sabbath cover of "War Pigs" Ozzy loved their version, he also performed it live with them in 1990 with James Hetfield.

For me this is one of the 3 top albums ever. Saw them live for the first time in 1995 on the tour for this album. They started with Ricochet which already sold them to me, but the most chilling moment ever in a concert was when they did King for a Day, dragged that atmospheric ending out forever and then directly went into Epic, which really was a very epic moment. Never been so blown away and satisfied at the same time in a concert before. To give an impression of how they were live at that time, this is from this tour, just a few days before the concert I was on: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6bZe32NgZmqrbc

Good tho hear your thoughts as always. 😊 I recall not liking this a whole lot when it first came out, but it grew on me. I do miss Roddy’s keys though and they’re considerably less prominent on this album (he was away for much of its recording due to personal issues). It’s interesting that you mention nu metal and SOAD as this album was hugely influential to both. The follow up “Album of the Year”, IMO is better than this and definitely worth a listen at some point, but your next port of call should be “The Real Thing” which is a classic.
