Nothin’ like 90s Helmet, & Betty’s one of my favourites from that early Post-Hardcore scene, alongside Hum’s You’d Prefer An Astronaut & Quicksand’s Slip. It’s like they’ve perfected their own style with some oddball songs like “Biscuits for Smut”, “The Silver Hawaiian” & the Primus-esque hillbilly ballad “Sam Hell” to round out the album ❤ After the classic lineup of this band dissolved, Page Hamilton (guitar/vocals) became David Bowie’s touring guitarist & John Stanier (drums) joined Tomahawk (Mike Patton band) as both Bowie & Patton were fans of the band. Thanks again for the reactions!

@mollyesanborn Jesus Lizard, too. Punk rock legends who actually did a split album with Nirvana and helped the development for the sound of Grunge in the early 90s. They are currently on Patton's independent record label called Ipecac Recordings, along with many other great artists.

Beautiful Love: Originally, this ballad was intended to be part of the background music for films of the time (1931). Over time, it became popular in the repertoire of jazz musicians, who adapted it to improvisation and swing formats, turning it into a standard performed by great artists. I had always found that noisy/jazzy ballad/improvisation a bit strange until one day I decided to look it up, and it turned out to be a cover, hehe. saw somewhere that you were recommended to react to Unwound. It would be fascinating! They're an amazing post-hc band and one of my favorites as well. Hopefully, you'll get to it! great reaction as usual Molly ☺

Fun facts about the drums. The snare is a massive brass snare tuned absurdly tight. A lot of people have thought it was a piccolo over the years but it's a 14" brass monster. The kick drum has a Roland 808 kick sample triggered and mixed in, which is why it sounds so huge. I love that album, even 30 years later I can still heard new things buried deep in the mixed. There's tons of little werid details in guitar overdubs and the singer yelling queues to the rest of the band that you can only heard with headphones on. Sonically I think it's one of the best sounding albums recorded period.

Helmet along with Pissing Razors, Jaw Box all sounded the same (somewhat) but were all heavily influenced or came out of the post-hardcore scene of the (to be exact) late 80’s and early 90’s. They weren’t influenced by alternative rock like how Deftones were. Deftones were very influenced by alternative rock band Smashing pumpkins but then again alt rock is just an off shoot of post-punk and hardcore, and new wave and.. which post-hardcore is really technically just more hardcore and noise.

@@mollyesanborn, I'm sure they don't generate as many views as other more popular bands. So I extra appreciate when reactors check them out. There is one more album with the original lineup, "Aftertaste". After that Page Hamilton continued on with the band with other musicians. Some will say there is nothing worth checking out post all original lineup, but the album, "Size Matters" is still pretty good. That album was done with some other solid musicians like John Tempesta on drums (White Zombie, The Cult, Testament, and others), Frank Bello on bass (Anthrax), and Chris Traynor 2nd guitar (Orange 9mm, Bush). So to me, it's a solid album. After that, I do still think they have some good stuff...just maybe not entire albums worth of it.

Yet another band I've never even heard of. To be fair, I mainly stuck to more extreme genres, like death metal (and many of it's sub-genres) when I was growing up and doing most of my own exploration of music. Before I discovered death metal, I listened to a lot of rock and some metal music because my parents did (Metallica's S&M album was my favourite and probably listened to it 100 times). These days I have an audiophile setup with a DAC/AMP and good EQ'd headphones, so I've been enjoying going back and basically rediscovering everything. It really is a game changer. It blew my mind at the beginning. Anyway, a bit of a tangent, but these days I'm basically open to any good music and my rig makes it extremely rewarding during active listening. 7:32 - I realize 30 years later that Tic is the only song from this record that I still really like. I hadn't heard Betty in so many years! I think Meantime aged better. Hey, BTW, I think you would make a really good book narrator! Too bad that industry will probably be 100% AI within 5 years. You have a voice that sounds authentic, compelling, and almost musical. I don't think that about most channels.

It took me awhile to get into this album. I used to think it was just too different from their earlier albums. But over time, it grew on me. Some other people mentioned that Milquetoast was originally on The Crow soundtrack. IMO, the better mix of the song is on that soundtrack. You're right that it does have a very similar ending to Unsung. Funny, because most people knew them for Unsung and then they heard Milquetoast, which are very similar. You wouldn't know their range without checking out the albums. Looking forward to when you will eventually check out Aftertaste. Be warned though, after that album, they are a bit rough.
@mollyesanborn4 ай бұрын
I'll definitely have to give The Crow version of Milquetoast a listen! And yeah they have a lot of variety to their sound, they are definitely a band where the whole album is a must listen to hear their entire range of styles.

'Betty' might be the most artistically diverse Helmet album with it's forays into incorporating more alternative rock learnings; great album, but personally I prefer the leaner and meaner 'Meantime'.
@mollyesanborn3 ай бұрын
You nailed it, I think there is more experimentation and diversity with the sound on Betty but there's something so dang punchy about Meantime that I love. Both are fantastic albums, I think Meantime is my favorite at this moment though.

I'm going to take a guess and say 'Biscuits for Smut' is an homage to Butthole Surfers, the twangy bass and weird vocals. Deranged, surrealist stoner rock that nobody else was doing. If I didn't know it was Helmet I would think it was Surfers.

I like how you get around copyright issues by playing snippets that fall below the time limit. Very well handled. Beyond that, I’ve often thought of Helmet as a Top 40 manifestation of Godflesh. :) Fun fact! Helmet is coming on tour near me to celebrate 30 years of Betty. Should I go? :) How about a one-off review of Hum’s “Stars” - assuming you’ve never heard it, of course, and you review more than full albums. Peace!!
@mollyesanborn3 ай бұрын
Haha, yeah I certainly try with the format. It also helps to keep the videos shorter, I know a lot of people don't want to sit and watch the entire album unedited. I can see where you're coming from with the Godflesh/Helmet comparison, there are a lot of similarities there. They've both got that amazing heaviness and aggression, and I love how atmospheric they both get with their music as well. You should definitely go see Helmet on their tour, I'll have to see them too if they're ever near me. And I actually did an album reaction for You'd Prefer An Astronaut, here's the link for it (skip to 4:30 if you want to hear me talk specifically about Stars). kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ2Xk6msr7CffrMsi=C8yixxJh9Ted31HX

Did you know Page Hamilton (vox/guit) went on to play with david bowie? I think you might enjoy the band glassjaw. They're kind of melodic post hardcore. Part deftones, part dillinger escape plan with punk rock/emo influences in there to. Definitely start with their debut.

Have you ever listened to "The Crow" (1994) movie soundtrack? It has a lot of bands/artists on it who I know you like (Helmet, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots and many others) I ask because the song "Milktoast" (or "Milquetoast" if you prefer) by Helmet was originally featured on the soundtrack, and was the first single from "Betty"
