The whole point of the Sugarcubes was Einar/Bjork as a synthesis, it is art, it is bold, very Icelandic, and thankfully it's still taking the piss out of people decades later.

I was at this show. Some friends of mine and I heard there was a free concert for students at Auburn - and Mtv was filming it. It was The Godfathers (who we knew because they had a modest Mtv hit at the time), plus two other bands I didn't know: The Sugarcubes and Living Colour. We were attending Jacksonville State Univ. about 2 hours away. Five of us hopped in a tiny Honda hatchback and made the trek, only to find out it was free for AUBURN students. But the person at the window felt bad and let us in anyway. When The Godfathers played, the arena was full. When Living Colour came on, it was about half full. When The Sugarcubes came on, the place was all but empty. I don’t think people knew what to make of the latter two bands. The audience (what was left) crammed into the front to make it look crowded for the Mtv cameras. I thought The Godfathers were ok. But I was blown away by both Living Colour and the Sugarcubes - both of whom were largely unknown at that point. If anyone else tells you they were there and saw The Sugarcubes play, approach it with skepticism. There probably weren't more than 150 people there by the end of their show.

Thanks for posting this! I knew it had to be the same show! As a kid up in Canada I saw the MTV broadcast of it (on muchmusic, most likely). It was called something like "The CMJ New Music College Assault" or something. I was kind of a Godfathers fan and major Living Colour fan, but I ended up recording this show on VHS because of this Sugarcubes performance. Just so....wow. They blew my mind. Watched the Living Colour and Sugarcubes performances for yeeeeeears afterward and feel like I noticed something new every time.

Nope. Many others of us do too :). I find myself singing what I think Einar would have sung when I hear a Bjork solo track. It's amusing to me that the whole world kisses Bjork's butt now, but the Sugarcubes were by and large treated like crap on their first US tour. I saw them with Public Image Limited and New Order in Denver on that time and the audience was incredibly rude to them. And yet the band were the nicest people (met them after the gig).

That's fair enough, but I think we also have to except that he was a member, a valuable member of The Sugarcubes who played the foil to Bjork's wonderful vocals. These kids were virtually sonic anarchists in their bands before they turned into The Sugarcubes, they weren't meant to be all sweetness and light, they were designed to lure you with Bjork's alluring voice and then stab you in the back with some odd time signatures, themes and Einar's jabbing contributions. It's what the Sugarcubes is.

I don't know why they're pissing and moaning about, it wasn't their band, it's wasn't solely Bjork's either, it was over twenty years ago, the reason there's other people on the stage is because it was a bloody BAND, not Bjork and some nameless backing musicians!

🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ I found Björk before I found the SugarCubes. I saw the video of her performing human behavior live on Conan, and since then I have been in a spiraling obsession 😂 I made it to her third solo album before I realized that she was in bands before. I went looking for the sugarcubes, and I'm just as in love with them as I am with her. I actually really enjoy this part of her musical history, because it's more mainstream band Rock, which she didn't really do it all in her solo career. I think Einar brings such a cool element to this band that makes it different from your average Rock band of the 80's and 90's. It's crazy to me and heartbreaking to learn that people actually used to boo him and throw things at him at their concerts, it's pathetic. I don't know who the hell would go to see a band, if they don't enjoy an entire half of their musical sound 🤦♀️
