Some of those fire ant colony castings are massive, and all are beautiful. Too bad wasp nests aren't suitable for that, but molten metal wins vs paper every time.

Which is insanely dangerous I might add. There's been so many videos I've seen of people doing them and not realize the potential for explosions when that molten metal hits the egg chambers. They're little sacs loaded with water that blow up like an egg in a microwave.

This is a great exapmple of why just because something sounds like a good idea, doesn't mean it is a good idea. Also, a great lesson on the fact that not all ground insects live in the ground the same way. Thanks HK!

Well that was interesting, but exactly what I expected. I think people get the idea of this because they see other youtubers doing it to ant nests, but don't realize that ant nests are different. Ants just burrow tunnels and cavities into the hard medium (the dirt) so when the liquid aluminum is poured into it, it fills all the nooks and crannies in that harder medium that doesn't melt quickly enough to deform and you get a cool sculpture showing what was there, whereas the paper wasp nest is instantly destroyed and leaves nothing for the alumunum to make a form of. It would be cool if it worked, but unfortunately it can't. But it was coll to watch nonetheless P.S. Hearing Bret call his neighbor's dogs "piece of shit dogs" was the giant laugh I needed today :)

It works with ant nests because they tunnels through the dirt so the aluminium just flow through the tunnels, hardening into the shape when cools. Hornets nest is just a cavity in the dirt and they build their nest there, which burns when molten aluminium touches it.

It is interesting you talked about the amount of dirt the southern yellowjackets remove from the ground...I got stung by some while mowing and under a barbed wire fence there is a line of dirt in shallow mounds along the fenceline right under it. When we first moved here I wondered why does the area right under that fence have this raised ground? Just strange mounds. Looked odd. But why? And so much... I had no idea why. Now I think it is these yellowjackets building nests right under the barbed wire all up and down the fenceline because the queens understand the tractor and mower do not go there and a relative feeds hummingbirds in late summer. The yellowjackets are closer to the hummingbird feeders but not in the area that gets mowed. They think they found the perfect spot until we moved here 🤣. Now they are a bit miffed 😂😂😂😂

The fact that people don't/can't understand how this works amazes me. I occasionally watch a fellow who makes aluminum casts of fire ant nests. And people actually ask about the poor ants trapped in the aluminum, and can you see them. I weep for humanity.

I get it when people do casting of Ant colony's the Ants nest is many tunnels under the ground for the metal to flow into and fill the voids. A wasp nest is totally different and its also made out of Flammable materials. Wood and maybe a little a paper. I never even thought about you trying to do a casting of an in ground wasp nest.
